Jackson Kinyoe (pictured above) from Wolverhampton said he is a regular at Merchants, adding that although the queues were long, “you don’t mind paying these prices”.

She said: ‘I wanted to put my free bus pass to good use and take advantage of this great offer.

‘I’m coming with a friend who I’ve worked with for 50 years and we thought it would be a completely different day out.

‘I use the Merchants in Bewdley and it usually costs £10.50 for a pensioners special, but that includes bread and butter and a cup of tea or coffee.

‘It’s great value but this is even better and all for a good cause as they donate part of the proceeds to the poppy drive.

‘I wouldn’t be here if my father hadn’t returned from Dunkirk. He also loved a bargain, so it’s a credit to him too.”

Jackson Kinyoe, 36, from Wolverhampton, said: ‘I work this way so I’m a regular and often come here for my lunch and the haddock is delicious.

‘What normally earns me £7 a time is going to cost me a penny today – it’s brilliant.

‘The queues are quite long. It will take much longer than normal to be served, but at these prices you won’t mind waiting.’

Another customer, Paul Hurst, 49, from Halesowen, added: ‘I’ve never seen such a cheap offer. It has to be the cheapest portion of fish and chips anywhere in the country.

‘I remember someone doing 99p before, but this is just absolutely crazy. Nothing costs 1 cent more. Even penny candies.

“I just hope I can get served and get back to work on my lunch break. But I don’t miss this.’

Manager Aggie Orthodoxou – who has worked at Merchants since it opened two and a half years ago – said he expected “chaos”.

Ahead of the one-day-only offer, the 52-year-old said: ‘We do regular cod and chips for a penny. I think this is going to be absolute chaos.

‘We are also going to contribute to charity and donate money to the poppy campaign.

‘We had fish and chips for half price The crowning of the King last year and that was also a great success.’
