Chemical spill at Hurstville school: 28 students and teachers treated after feeling unwell
Emergency rescue crews have contained a chemical spill at a secondary school that left students and teachers unwell.
Twenty-eight people were assessed and monitored after a 600ml bottle of benzyl chloride leaked at a science laboratory in Hurstville, Sydney, on Wednesday.
The chemical is sometimes used to make dyes and also pharmaceuticals and it is understood the bottle was moved to be thrown away.
It is understood the chemical was about to be shipped for disposal.
It is understood that 20 students and eight teachers have been affected at the Vine Street secondary school.
People near the chemical felt irritation and smelled strong fumes.
Fire and Rescue NSW (RNSW) quickly deployed 18 firefighters, including hazardous materials specialists.
Five fire engines arrived on the scene.
