The Swedish royal family was in full force in Stockholm today to celebrate their country’s national holiday.

Crown Princess Victoria, 45, was seen sporting a beaming smile as she donned a traditional outfit to celebrate the occasion.

The notable June 6 date was when Gustav Vasa was elected king in 1523 and made Sweden an independent country, when they broke away from the Danish-ruled Kalmar Union.

Today has been a public holiday since 2005, but the Swedes celebrated the day long before that.

Princess Victoria was accompanied by her husband Prince Daniel, 49, and they were pictured opening the western gates of the castle at 10am this morning.

Traditionally, the Royal Palace is open to the public with free entry on National Day and everyone is welcome.

The royal couple also brought along their children, Princess Estelle, 11, and Prince Oscar, seven, who also wore sportswear steeped in history.

The mother and daughter duo matched each other in the shades of blue and yellow of the ‘Sverigedräkten’ folk dress costume.

This consists of a white shirt or blouse, blue skirt or dress and a yellow overskirt in the colors of the Swedish flag.

While Prince Daniel and Oscar wore smart navy blue suits complete with matching sapphire blue ties.

Another healthy photo shows Princess Estelle – the future Queen of Sweden – with her arm around younger brother Prince Oscar, who wears a badge of the Swedish flag.

They also posed together for another shot taken from behind, which shows Estelle looking down at her younger brother, as he looks up at her.

Every year, the King and Queen take part in a ceremony at Skansen, Stockholm’s open-air museum.

Here the yellow and blue Swedish flag hangs from the mast and children in traditional peasant costumes present bouquets of summer flowers to the royal couple.

National Day now also recognizes new Swedish citizens and welcomes them with special ceremonies held across the country.

Other festivities that usually take place on Sweden’s National Day, also known as Svenska Flaggans Day (Swedish Flag Day), include a ceremony at Skansen, Stockholm’s open-air museum.

The Swedish flag is raised and children present bouquets of summer flowers to the King and Queen of Sweden.
