One person sent his support to Janet, writing, “So sorry to hear about the #street harassment Janet Street Porter suffered recently.

“It is important to report all forms of abuse against women – the police need to know the true extent of the problem, only then can it be properly addressed and funded.”

Her co-host, Charlene White, asked if Janet had reported the man to the police, to which she said, “Well, I’ve been thinking about whether I should.

‘I think it would be prudent to report this to the local police in Kent as we know enough about the chap to perhaps identify him.

“Another thing to counter that, the police are all overworked, are they going to do something about that?”

Charlene then said the man could be charged with verbal abuse as it is a criminal offence.

She said: “That is using threatening, abusive or abusive language with the intent to create or cause alarm or fear.

“I think in the initial situation it is normal to report it and then there is a report of it.”

In the column, Janet wrote, “Women like me who raise our heads and speak our mind — on television and online — are used to being mocked by anonymous trolls.

“But even if I detest anyone’s opinion, I would never dream of getting in a car and following them, yelling and swearing at close range out the window.”

She then concluded her column by saying, “I want him to be ashamed of not treating a fellow human being with respect.”
