A political crisis emerged in Jharkhand following the arrest of former chief minister and JMM leader Hemant Soren by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday evening.

Political crisis in Jharkhand: The JMM-led alliance is planning to shift their MLAs outside Jharkhand to avoid horse-trading and “robbing” of the legislators by the BJP. A bus carrying MLAs of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-Congress-RJD alliance was reportedly spotted outside Ranchi airport on Thursday evening, ANI reported.

Reports citing sources say the MLAs then boarded a flight at Ranchi airport and are likely to be flown to Hyderabad. “The MLAs are likely to be shifted to Hyderabad. However, the flight has not yet taken off due to poor visibility,” the sources said, according to ANI.

Footage from Hyderabad also showed buses parked outside the Begumpet airport.

Speaking to reporters outside Ranchi airport, Jharkhand Congress president Rajesh Thakur claimed that the alliance has enough members to form the government.

“3-4 MLAs will stay in Ranchi to keep watch here (in Jharkhand). We have enough numbers to form the government. All 43 MLAs are together, we have full confidence. We will continue to meet the governor until he calls us to form the government,” Thakur told reporters outside Ranchi airport.

“You know what kind of people they are… they can do anything at any time. There are a total of 43 MLAs going on,” Thakur said in a veiled jab at the BJP.

'BJP crushes mandate in every state'

Amid the heightened political atmosphere in the state, Congress leaders slammed the BJP and accused the saffron party of 'crushing the mandate in every state'.

“Immediately after the resignation of the coalition government in Bihar, the governor had extended an invitation to form a new government. But the invitation to form a government was sent not even a day after claiming Jharkhand,” Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said in a post on X.

“Firstly, the Prime Minister was forced to resign by imposing ED. He had been arrested. Now there are reports that attempts are being made to buy the MLAs by stopping the formation of the new government. First Bihar, then Chandigarh and now Jharkhand – BJP is destroying mandate in every state by exerting influence through money,” she added.

'No respect for the constitution'

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the Jharkhand governor's delay in inviting JMM party leader Champai Soren to form the government in the state as a 'disrespect for the Constitution'.

“In the House of 81 MLAs, only 41 have the majority. Despite the support of 48 MLAs, not inviting Champai Soren ji to form the government is clearly a disrespect to the Constitution and a denial of public opinion,” Kharge said in a post on X.

“Nails are being hammered into the coffin of Indian democracy one by one by their Excellencies,” the Congress chief added.

'Political injustice'

Meanwhile, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “This is yet another example of political injustice.”

“By doing what is called 'Horse-Trading' in English, they only have time for that. This is not only injustice, but also murder of democracy,” he said in a message on X.

Champai Soren meets governor and claims to form government

Earlier in the day, Champai Soren along with 43 legislators met Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan where they took stake in forming the government in the state.

“We have demanded from the governor to begin the process of forming the new government. The governor has also assured us that the process will begin soon,” Champai Soren told reporters after the meeting with the governor.

“Currently, we have submitted the report with 43 MLAs in support. We expect the number to reach 46-47, so there is no problem. Our 'gathbandhan' is very strong,” he added.

In the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance, which also includes Congress and RJD, has 47 MLAs, including 29 from JMM, 17 from Congress and 1 from RJD.

The BJP has 25 members and the AJSU party has three MLAs. The NCP and the CPI (ML)L each have one member, with the exception of three independent members.
