Joe Biden’s ‘crackdown’ on illegal migrants ripped as a 2024 campaign ‘stunt’ as president plans to CLOSE the border if crossings skyrocket

The long-awaited executive action could be announced as soon as Tuesday.

Reports based on interviews with people familiar with plans for the new policy claim that the border will be closed once the number of border crossings reaches 4,000 per day over the course of a week.

This would be the most restrictive border policy Biden has implemented since taking office in January 2021 — and comes after three and a half years of pressure from Republicans for the White House to take action to tackle rising illegal immigration.

Biden has repeatedly said he needs help Congress to stem the record-breaking flow of illegal immigration along the U.S.-Mexico border. But his tone appears to have changed as there are plans to take unilateral action to tackle the crisis, with just five months until the presidential election.

President Joe Biden plans to announce an executive order as early as Tuesday that would limit the number of migrants who can cross the southern border each day if it reaches 4,000 per day.

Despite the blockade at border crossings, the US will continue to allow asylum seekers to make appointments at border ports using a mobile app known as CBP One.

Biden’s Department of Homeland Security is currently accepting about 1,400 migrants daily through that program.

Republicans claim the executive action is a “stunt” and insist Biden is finally taking action because he was forced to face the reality of how important the border and illegal immigration are to voters heading to the polls in November.

“Don’t be fooled by Biden’s latest move on the border, which is nothing more than a political stunt,” Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) wrote to X. “He is trying to appear tough on immigration because he is losing ground in the polls.’

He added, “Remember, he has already admitted more than 10 million illegal aliens, and his new executive order will likely lead to at least 1.5 million additional illegal crossings in the coming year.”

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) also wrote on X, “This is an election stunt that will not distract voters from Joe Biden’s disastrous, failed immigration policies.”

Biden’s order would mirror policies that former President Donald Trump began using in 2018 to block illegal immigration at the southern border — a policy that was challenged several times by Democrats in federal courts.

But House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) says it’s “too little, too late” to address the issue now — and claims Biden and his DHS secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, have 64 other have taken actions that have further opened the southern border and worsened the illegal immigration crisis.

Earlier, the Biden White House asked Congress to pass new laws to expand presidential authority over the border. The Democratic administration argues that Congress must act to allow action to address the issue.

A bipartisan border deal failed to materialize earlier this year, and the Senate voted for the border measure again in May, with both Democrats and Republicans opposing it.

The plan now is for Biden to implement parts of the Senate deal unilaterally, including denying entry to migrants after certain thresholds are reached.

The sources said the White House is specifically considering a policy that would limit encounters with migrants to 4,000 per day for a week — 28,000 in total.

It is unclear what would happen if that threshold is reached.

Similar policies were at the heart of the failed Senate deal, but Republicans denounced the measure as not doing enough to tackle illegal immigration.

The White House expects to use the authority under Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act to move forward with Biden’s executive order.

That law gives presidents leeway in blocking the entry of certain immigrants if doing so would be “harmful” to national interests.

Former President Trump repeatedly leaned on that part of the law to exclude certain immigrants who crossed the border illegally and sought asylum at the southern border.

Presidents who use Section 212(f) to restrict migration do not need congressional approval.

But Biden has repeatedly said he wants new laws from Congress to regulate the border.

Biden pushed for passage of the twice-rejected Senate bill, saying in January, “It would give me, as president, new emergency authority to close the border if it becomes overwhelmed.”

“And if I were given that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill into law,” his January statement continued.

But it appears the White House has since decided they can go it alone, as Republicans have argued, and will implement reforms this week, though the timing of the reported executive action is opaque.

The administration has reportedly been trying to use this power for months — and now sources say an executive order could be on the way this week.

The White House “continues to explore a range of policy options and we remain committed to taking action to address our broken immigration system,” spokesman Angelo Fernández Hernández said recently.

“While Republicans in Congress chose to stand in the way of additional border enforcement, President Biden will not stop fighting to deliver the resources border and immigration personnel need to secure our border,” he added.

But when asked Sunday about Biden’s election-year reversal of border policies, Republican Chairman Mike Johnson denounced the administration’s considered move, saying it is “too little, too late.”

“He’s desperately trying to show the American people that he wants to tackle the issue he created,” Johnson said.

“We documented 64 specific actions that President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas took over from DHS … over the course of three and a half years, beginning on President Biden’s first day in office [took office]to open the border.”

“They did it deliberately. It has had catastrophic consequences for our country that we will live with for decades.”

Johnson has spent his few months in power lobbying the White House to take executive action on the border.

And now that it has, he claimed it’s only because it’s an election year.

“He wants to issue some kind of executive order, I think to show that he really cares about the issue,” Johnson said. “The only reason he’s doing that is because the polls say this is the biggest problem in America.”

“And the first question that comes up in virtually every public forum is what about that open border and why on earth would President Biden allow it? He did more than allow it, he designed it and everyone knows it.”
