The victims of the shooting at a party for the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday included some of the team's youngest fans.

Eleven children ages 6 to 15 were treated for injuries at Children's Mercy, a hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, said Stephanie Meyer, the hospital's senior vice president and chief nursing officer.

Nine of the children had gunshot wounds, she said, while the others had “incidental injuries.” No one was in critical condition and all were expected to recover.

“The only word I would use to describe what we saw and how they felt when they came to us,” she said of the children, “was fear.”

A twelfth victim was also treated in hospital – a mother who had refused to be separated from her child in the aftermath of the shooting.
