Kevin the Wortel is back for another Aldi Christmas, this time touring William Conker’s Christmas factory with spoiled little Brussels sprouts and greedy, gluttonous grapes.

This is Kevin’s eighth year as Aldi’s festive mascot and this year their advert has taken more than a little inspiration from the famous Willy Wonka.

The advert, narrated by acting legend Jim Broadbent in the style of a poem, tells the story of Kevin’s journey to the factory alongside Grandpa Grate and four other competition winners.

The group is shown around Conker’s factory, which is filled with festive treats including a Christmas tree with choux buns, a mince pie conveyor belt and a gravy river.

But while Kevin celebrates the giving nature of Christmas, other winners are more selfish and find themselves in difficult situations.

The pun-filled ad begins with an excited crowd gathering at the factory gate before Conker makes his grand arrival.

“Welcome to my world of festive innovation,” Conker says, as the group enters the factory, filled with workers called “plumpty dumplings.”

“Look, trumpeting sprouts!” Kevin shouts, as a boat carrying a group of Brussels sprouts playing trumpets sails along the gravy river.

The narrator then says, “The guests were politely told not to touch each other, but the greedy, gluttonous grape didn’t listen very much” – after which the grape jumps into the river and starts slurping up the gravy with a straw.

“My beautiful gravy,” Conker whines.

But Grape soon faces the consequences when he gets swamped in gravy.

The next to burst their bubble is the ‘sulky, sour rhubarb’ who ‘always puts himself first’. She pushes two plump dumplings out of the way to get the best view of the river, but when she blows a bubble gum bubble, a flying light bulb quickly pops it with a holly leaf, leaving the rhubarb covered in sticky bubble gum.

The factory tour continues to the mince pie conveyor belt, where snowmen’s heads are crushed by giant mechanical hands and turned into icing sugar to top the treats.

“I want a mince pie,” the spoiled little sprout shouts – before jumping off the platform and onto the snowman head pull roller, knocking over a plump dumpling in the process.

Both Sprout and the fat dumpling are hooked to the machine and carried to the giant hands. “I can see his plum bursting,” says Kevin, as the fat dumpling is hooked to the machine with his pants.

The ad then shows Sprout between the giant hands before cutting away and a crunching sound is heard as Conker places a sheet over Kevin’s eyes.

No Christmas dinner is complete without dessert, so the next stop at the factory is at the chocolate pudding maker – where cakes are covered in melted chocolate.

The narrator says, “Christmas isn’t selfish, it’s not all ‘me, me.’ Yet no one had said this to the mischievous Kiwi.’

Kiwi stands excitedly next to the puddings before jumping onto them to catch the melted chocolate coming out of the tap. The cake is then dipped into a cooler and the Kiwi ends up hardened in the cake.

“Only Kevin the Carrot clearly understood the true meaning of Christmas and the importance of being good,” the narrator continues, as Kevin hands out presents to the fat dumplings.

Conker says, “Congratulations Kevin, you passed the test. I would like to offer you the cheese to the factory.’

At this point, a block of cheese in the shape of a key rises from the floor.

“Wow, that’s huge Willy,” says Kevin. ‘Can I share my happiness with everyone?’

“That’s the ghost,” Conker replies – at which point the factory doors open and an array of fruit and vegetable characters pour in.

The advert ends with the message ‘Seasonal goodwill was truly in the air as Christmas is a time sweeter when you share’, accompanied by a cheerful crowd of characters from Aldi’s Christmas past, including Ebanana Scrooge and Marcus Raddishford.

It then zooms out with a variety of Aldi sweet treats and Christmas dinner essentials, including turkey, roast potatoes and cheese boards.

Jemma Townsend, Marketing Director at Aldi UK, said: ‘Christmas will be magical by coming together and sharing the joy of the festive season, even in difficult times – just as Kevin wants with his Christmas wish.

‘It wouldn’t be a festive season without Kevin de Wortel on our TV screens; we know our customers will love seeing him get into the Christmas spirit as we welcome him to us for his eighth year.”
