Thompson, of the 5th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland, is an equerry – an officer of the royal household who assists members of the royal family.

He will now take on the role of ‘super horseman’ and serve as the king’s ‘right-hand man’, sources have told The Sun. MailOnline has contacted Buckingham Palace about the report.

It comes after Thompson made earlier this year third place from Tatler Social Power Index, which shows where ‘real power lies in Britain’.

According to Tatler, Johnny has a ‘fantastic sense of humour’ and can look just as good in a suit as he does in a kilt.
