Lily Gladstone honored her Blackfeet roots while accepting an award at the Golden Globes.
Gladstone, 37, began her acceptance speech on Sunday, January 7, by speaking in Blackfeet before continuing in English.
“I love everyone in this room right now. I have no words. I just kind of spoke in the Blackfeet language – a beautiful community and nation that raised me and encouraged me to go on and do this,” she explained. “My mother – even though she is not Blackfeet – worked tirelessly to bring our language into our classrooms.”
Gladstone, the first Indigenous winner in her category, continued: “I am so grateful that I was able to speak even a little bit of my language, which I am not fluent enough in because Indigenous actors used to speak their lines in English. and then the sound mixers would run them backwards to display the native language on camera.
The actress then thanked the costars Leonardo DiCaprio And Robert de Niro as well as director Martin Scorsese for their support. “This is a historic victory that does not belong to me alone. Thanks Marty. Thanks Leo. Thanks Bob,” she concluded. “You are all changing things. Thank you for being such allies.”
Gladstone defeated Annette Bening (Nyad), Sandra Huller (Anatomy of a fall), Greta Lee (Past lives), Carey Mulligan (Master) And Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) for best actress in a drama film.
Killers of the Flower Moonwhich tells the true story of a series of murders of Osage Native Americans that took place in Oklahoma in the 1920s, scored a total of seven nods at this year’s awards ceremony.
The film’s nominations include Best Picture – Drama, Best Original Score – Film and Best Screenplay – Film.
Scorsese, 81, also received Best Director honors for his work on the film, while DiCaprio, 49, and De Niro, 80, were nominated for their acting. The film won only one award.
“I am deeply touched that the Golden Globes recognize our film and the Osage heart behind it. We could not have brought this story to life without the personal contributions of the Osage Nation, and I will be forever grateful to them and every member of the cast and crew,” Gladstone said in a statement last month after making history as the Golden Globes’ first Indigenous nominee for Female Actor in a Motion Picture.
She added that it is “especially meaningful” to be nominated alongside her collaborators Scorsese, 81, De Niro and DiCaprio.
Although the Killers of the Flower Moon team worked with the Osage community on the film – Geoffrey standing bearthe head of the Osage Nation, fully supported the project – not everyone agreed with the way the work portrayed the indigenous people.
‘This film was painful, grueling, brutal and unnecessarily graphic’ Reservation Dogs star Devery Jacobs wrote via X in October 2023. “As a Native, watching this movie was hellfire. Imagine the worst atrocities committed against them [your] ancestors, and then have to sit through a movie explicitly filled with them, with the only respite being 30-minute scenes of murderous white boys talking about or planning the murders.
Gladstone later acknowledged that the film may be difficult for some people to watch in November 2023 X wire.
“See it when and only when you feel ready, and see it with people you feel safe with. You will probably have to deal with a lot of generational sadness. You are not alone,” she wrote. “I am so proud of the film we made with so many Osage Nation leaders, artists, educators and community activists. Never forget that this story is recent history with a lasting impact on the breathing and feeling of people today. It is theirs, and we can all learn so much from it.”
DiCaprio, meanwhile, talked about his collaboration during a joint interview with Gladstone British Vogue in September 2023.
“Marty just knew instinctively that Lily was the one,” the actor said, noting that there was “truth to it.” [Gladstone’s] eyes” that came through even when Scorcese met her via Zoom. “She carries the entire film and the story.”
