Suarez 'reveals Arsenal would have signed Benzema if he hadn't bitten Chiellini'

LUIS SUAREZ has claimed his infamous bite on Giorgio Chiellini caused Arsenal to lose out on signing Karim Benzema.

It was 2014 and Suarez wanted to leave Liverpool as both Real Madrid and Barcelona were interested.

And Madrid already had Benzema on his way out and Suarez lined up for a replacement at the World Cup.

But after the Uruguayan was caught biting Chiellini, he claimed Madrid had lost interest.

Instead, he decided to join Barca, which meant Madrid kept Benzema and Arsenal were left empty-handed.

He told LaMesa: “Before the 2014 World Cup, Real Madrid wanted to sign me and everything was on schedule.

“They were planning to sell Benzema to Arsenal, that was all done. When the World Cup started, Barca were in the race, and of course I preferred Barca.

“Because of the bite situation, Madrid lowered their interest, and Barça became more interested.

“In the end I had both options and I chose Barcelona because it was my dream.”

Suarez was caught on camera biting Chiellini's arm during a group match between Uruguay and Italy.

It came just a year after he did the same to Chelsea player Branislav Ivanovic.

Suarez was suspended for nine international matches by FIFA, but his move to Barcelona still went ahead.

He would win four league titles and win the Champions League during his time at Camp Nou.

And now Suarez is back with teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets at Inter Miami.

But Suarez did reveal plans to retire, saying: “Yes, I couldn't be more sincere and the family already knows. The date has not been set yet, but this is the last step.

“I am prepared for this last challenge, but it is also tiring and I have to think about a quality of life afterwards.
