Officers from Merseyside and Greater Manchester Police used specialist tactics to ram the vehicle and block it between a number of police vehicles, eventually bringing the car to a stop.

The terrifying incident happened on Wednesday on the eastbound carriageway, between J11 for Birchwood and J12 for Eccles.

All lanes were closed for some time and traffic was stopped as police responded to the incident.

Pictures from the scene show the black vehicle wedged between two Merseyside Police Matrix vehicles.

Two lanes later reopened and another two were closed, causing major delays of almost an hour and building up traffic jams before rush hour.

A North West Motorway Police spokesperson said: “Police currently have lanes 3 and 4 closed on the M62 EB J11 to 12.

“This follows the use of tactics to stop an electric vehicle with an electrical fault where the driver was unable to brake.

“Highway officers from Merseyside, Cheshire and GMP brought the vehicle to a safe stop.”
