A man suspected of fatally shooting three women and a 13-year-old girl in Memphis was found dead early Sunday of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said, ending an hours-long manhunt.

Police said the man, Mavis Christian Jr., 52, was involved in shootings at three locations on Saturday that left four dead and one seriously injured. The shootings sparked an hours-long manhunt involving local, state and federal agencies, fueling fear among residents as officials sent out a message warning that Mr. Christian was “armed and extremely dangerous.”

Police said preliminary information indicated the shootings were related and were an incident of domestic violence. All the victims were relatives of Mr. Christian, police said.

Police began searching for Mr. Christian on Saturday afternoon around 5:40 p.m., after the first shooting in a residential neighborhood in the south part of Memphis. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while a third, who is 15 years old, was taken to a hospital, a police spokesman said.

Later that evening, police responded to two more shootings, around 6:30 PM and around 9:30 PM, with one victim found with a gunshot wound at each location. Both were found dead at the scene.

After an hours-long manhunt, Mr. Christian was found dead around 3:30 a.m. Sunday in a white Chevrolet Malibu that police were chasing, with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
