He is best known for playing the role of Cosmo Kramer on the hit television series Seinfeld from 1989 to 1998.

And on Wednesday, Michael Richards looked unrecognizable as he surprised fans with a rare TV appearance.

The American actor, 74, looked very different from his time on the show, sporting gray hair as he discussed his new memoir Entrances and Exits on Channel Seven’s Sunrise.

During the interview, Michael revealed why he decided to write a memoir, eighteen years after stepping out of the spotlight.

“It’s a memoir right up to my age, now that I’m 75, and I’ve had a lot of life to talk about since I was little and all the way into show business,” he explained.

‘Certainly how I discovered myself as an actor and how I discovered myself as an artist. I worked with my journals and started writing about the Seinfeld show and as I started turning into it, it started to become a book.”

He also recounted his infamous rant at the Laugh Factory in 2006, where he exploded with anger and hurled racial slurs at hecklers during a stand-up show.

‘I finally had to start with that forgiveness within myself. How do I move on after such a despicable night? Bad night. Terrible night. Said horrible things. That was 18 years ago,” he admitted.

‘There was a lot of self-reflection. And go deeper into myself. Interesting how such a situation is a catalyst for the development towards a better self. So that’s it. Restoration, forgiveness and reconciliation.”

In November 2006, shocking footage emerged of Richards repeatedly calling an audience member who interrupted his act a racial slur.

‘Throw his ass out…He’s a *****! Look, there’s a*****!’ You can hear Richards say in the video.

During his meltdown, Richards repeatedly referred to black audience members as “n******” while shouting, “Fifty years ago we would have had you upside down with a fucking fork up your ass.”

After the shocking incident, he spoke to David Letterman to express his regret, saying: ‘I’m really devastated by this and I’m very sorry. I’m not a racist, that’s the crazy thing about this. “I’ve said some pretty nasty things to some African Americans, a lot of nonsense.”

The father of two continued, “You know, I’m an artist… I push the boundaries; I work very uncontrollably on stage. I do a lot of free association, it’s spontaneous, I focus on character.’

According to The guardHis two-minute rant left the audience at the time “confused” and “unsure whether the extreme language was part of Richards’ act.”

The publication noted that at one point, “the target of Richards’ comments yelled back at Richards several times, telling him the insults were not justified.”
