“For me, it was just that natural instinct to think that I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if something happened,” Jacobson said KARE 11.

“As a concerned pet owner, you think, OK, what should you do? Do you have a fight-or-flight instinct?’

She said her knee-jerk reaction was to protect Zeus “as much as possible.”

Jacobson got within about 50 feet of the bear when reality hit. She turned abruptly and high-tailed it home without her dog.

The Minnesota woman waited from her screened porch as the minutes passed. However, she was able to breathe a sigh of relief when Zeus emerged from the forest, seemingly unharmed.

Bear encounters are so common that the Minnesota Department of Natural Wildlife has deemed the state “bear country.”

Although black bears are naturally cautious and volatile, conflict can arise when the creatures come into contact with pets or damage personal property.

The agency is urging Minnesotans to limit the availability of “bear attractants” – things that smell like food – including birdseed, dog food, garbage and grill grease.

“Taking the initiative to secure or remove attractants will help prevent bears from causing a nuisance,” according to the department’s website. is reading.

When a bear is encountered, people are encouraged to back away slowly, not run, but only raise their voices as the bear approaches.

“Just wait and see if the bear leaves on its own,” the agency instructs.

‘If the bear does not leave on its own, but comes closer (for example, comes onto the deck, or puts its paws on windows or doors), it is time to try to scare it away: shouting loudly, banging on pots, slamming the door or throw something.’

Jacobson admitted it probably wasn’t the safest way to run after the bear, but vowed to do it again if it meant her beloved dog would be protected.

“I think any pet owner would agree that you would do anything for your dog, and if that means chasing a bear and making as much noise as possible, then I think you would do that,” she said.
