I’m frustrated that people keep misspelling my newborn’s name

A mother has expressed her frustration online after several people misspelled her newborn’s name.

The anonymous woman posted a message on the British forum Mumsnet to ask others if she was being unreasonable.

She said more than half of her congratulatory cards contain the misspelling of her daughter’s name.

She wrote, “We’ve given our new baby a name that has several legitimate and common spellings.

‘The spelling we’ve chosen is actually the original spelling, but is currently the second most popular spelling in the UK.

‘Think of Isabelle versus Isabel, for example. It is not an invented or unknown spelling and is completely phonetic. The name itself is not particularly unusual.

“Almost everyone is already misspelling the baby’s name – over half of our new baby cards are misspelled.

“I’ve literally texted people ‘meet baby Isabelle’ and underneath they’ve written something like ‘congratulations, ‘Isabel’ is beautiful’ etc.”

The woman went on to say she knew the spelling was going to be a problem, but she “expected people to be able to read what I wrote and spell it right once they heard the name.”

She kept asking if she was unreasonable to think it’s rude not to make an effort to correctly spell her baby’s name on a card.

People took to the thread to comment on what they thought of the situation – some users thought the woman was rude and she should appreciate the gesture.

One user said, “Sorry, I think you’re just being a little unreasonable. You may be lucky that people take the time and effort to send you a card, a spelling mistake in a name is not really that important.

“I always get it, even if I spell my name on the phone, if it’s followed by a letter or email, it’s almost always misspelled.

“I’m afraid people are just a little lazy about these things. Congratulations on the new baby!’

Another wrote: ‘Not rude, but a very easy mistake to make when there are several correct versions and many other things going on.

“Actually, I think it’s kind of rude to be annoyed rather than just thankful they made the effort.”

A third wrote: ‘It’s not stupid or lazy! People have other things going on than double-checking the spelling of a name.

“Personally, I think Isabelle/Isobel/Isabel is an ab***dy nightmare (I appreciate that’s not your baby’s name).”

A fourth commented, “You know what’s important? That people are excited and adore your new baby and what to welcome her.

“You know what’s not important? That they spell her name right.’

But other users took to the woman’s defense and agreed, with one saying people shouldn’t bother buying tickets if they don’t check the spelling of a name.

One user said, “God, I would NEVER do that. I always check and double check the spelling of a name if I’m not sure.

“People who don’t capitalize names really annoy me. It’s so lazy.’

Another wrote: ‘People spell mine wrong all the time, think it ends. If it’s there in my email how I unsubscribed the email and then back in my formal email signature.

“I always make sure to check how a name is spelled because it drives me crazy. It takes a while. You’re not being unreasonable.’

A third wrote: “Yeah, this annoys me too. It’s actually not that much of a hassle to buy a card if you’re doing a grocery store anyway, you just throw it in the trolley and then 2 minutes to write it.

“But why bother at all if you can’t check the spelling of the name? A friend of mine does this all the time.

“To be honest, I’d rather not get any tickets at all if my friends don’t care enough about me to spell my name right.

A fourth said: ‘I’m almost 40 and people misspell my name all the time. Even when replying to an email from me where it’s in both the email address and unsubscribe.

It will never change and neither will your child. However, you will appreciate the people who do it right!’
