New times and places! By means of ForeignerClaire Randall and the rest of the Fraser family have traveled through time – from 18th century Scotland to 20th century America.
The Starz drama – which premiered in August 2014 – introduced viewers to nurse Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) as she travels back in time from 1945 to 1793. There she meets the chivalrous Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and the rest of the Foreigner characters. Over the years, the drama series — based on Diana Gabaldon‘s 13-book franchise – chronicles Claire’s time-travelling exploits around the world.
“Claire is a 1940s woman, so I did a lot of research on nurses who worked on the front lines in World War II,” says the Belfast actress told UPI on portraying the literary heroine in September 2014. “I found some great books that gave a first hand account of that and I met a herbalist and of course Diana’s book is a bit like the bible for all of us.”
Balfe continued at the time: “We talked a lot about, ‘What would Claire’s life have been like if she hadn’t gone through the bricks?’ … I’m a firm believer that she wouldn’t have been happy if they’d moved to Oxford and he’d taken over his teaching job and she’d been this stay-at-home wife, who had another hobby on the side. could have survived. So in a weird way, this gave her the chance to become the best version of herself. In the first season and the first book, she’s mainly looking to survive, but I think as the story progresses, really seeing her go out into the world and take in the bigger picture and become so incredibly strong, self-aware woman.”
While Claire and daughter Brianna (played by Sophia Skelton) have both inherited the time travel gene, but not every character possesses the gift of experiencing different timelines.
‘Jamie doesn’t have it [the ability]there are certain people to whom it can be passed down from generation to generation, but certain people not,” Balfe explained during a December 2017 appearance on the UK’s This morning.
While the Men in kilts alum’s character has remained in the past timeline, he has also been able to experience different settings. During Season 5, Jamie and Claire were shipwrecked on their journey home, which brought them to Revolutionary War America. (The time frame continued through Season 6.)
“As an actor, it was such a great storyline. It gave me and the character a dramatic decision to make,” Heughan shared Elle in May 2020 about his journey in the fifth season. “I had a lot of influence on the symbolism of the redcoat. During filming there were certain things I had to push back or ask for more time for Jamie, and when he loses Murtagh [Fraser, played by Duncan Lacroix] we had to do some reshoots. It was great to have the ear of the writer and director, to work closely with them to get the best out of the story.”
