Prevelley, Western Australia: Urgent search launched for surfer who went missing off popular Surfers Point beach
A desperate search is on for a surfer who disappeared into the water after getting into trouble.
The man went missing at Surfers Point in Prevelley, about three hours south of Perth, at 4.35pm on Friday.
Another surfer spotted the man, believed to be in his 40s, and noticed he needed help but was unable to reach him due to the difficult conditions.
“A number of police and emergency services have been deployed to the area and an initial search of the water and beach area has been undertaken,” a police spokesman said.
The man went missing at Surfers Point in Prevelley, about three hours south of Perth, at 4.35pm on Friday.
“At this time the surfer has not been located.”
On Saturday, local sea rescue services and jet skis joined the search before it was called off around noon due to the rough conditions.
The location is known internationally as one of the venues for the Margaret River Pro, held over 10 days in April.
It is not the first time a surfing incident has been reported in the area.
WA surfer Frank Hayter died after a fatal surfing incident at Surfers Point on August 21, 2021.
Other surfers helped free the 65-year-old’s body from his leg rope that was stuck in the reef. ABC news reported at the time.

Mr Hayter was a much-loved figure in the Margaret River surfing community, having founded the Scarborough Boardriders Club more than 30 years ago.
He won several national and state titles during his career.
Surfer’s Point remains closed and the public is advised to avoid the area.
