Shannen Doherty remains strong despite a new development in her fight against stage IV breast cancer.

“I don’t want to die,” Doherty, 52, said People in an interview published on Wednesday, November 29, revealing that the disease has spread to her bones.

Doherty remains determined to fight the disease, claiming: ‘I’m not done living yet. I’m not done loving yet. I’m not done creating yet. I’m not done yet hopefully changing things for the better.”

However, by February 2020, Doherty’s cancer had returned and progressed to stage IV. “I don’t think I’ve processed it,” she further admitted Good morning America. “It’s a bitter pill to swallow in many ways. … You know, our lives don’t end once we get that diagnosis. We still have some work to do.”

Doherty has kept fans updated throughout her health struggles, revealing earlier this year that her breast cancer had spread to her brain. “I am fortunate to have amazing doctors like Dr. Amin Mirahdi and the amazing technicians at Cedar Sinai,” she wrote via Instagram in June alongside a video of her first round of radiation five months earlier. “But that fear… The anxiety… the timing of it all… This is what cancer can look like.”

In a separate upload shared in June, Doherty gave a glimpse of how she prepared for surgery. “January 16, 2023. Operation. I had a tumor in my head that they wanted to remove and also do a biopsy. I’m obviously trying to be brave, but I’m terrified,” she captioned the Instagram video. “The fear overwhelmed me. Afraid of all possible bad outcomes, worried about leaving my mother and how that would affect her. Afraid that I would come out of the surgery and not me anymore. This is what cancer can look like.”

Doherty spoke through her public platform People she wants to help raise awareness and funds for cancer research. “It’s crazy to me [that] we still don’t have a cure,” she added, noting that her illness has forced her to “search for the greater purpose in life.”

Doherty hopes to benefit from new clinical trials for further treatments, and she still wants to take as much action as possible. “People just assume this means you can’t walk, you can’t eat and you can’t work. They put you out to pasture at a very young age: ‘You’re done, you’re retired,’ and that’s not the case,” she told the outlet. “We are vibrant and we have such a different outlook on life. We are people who want to work, embrace life and keep moving forward.”

Doherty is not interested in being defined by the status of her health. “My greatest memory is yet to come,” she continued. “I pray. I wake up and go to bed thanking God, praying for the things that matter to me, without asking for too much. It connects me to a higher power and spirituality. My faith is my mantra.”
