A DRINKS expert has revealed an affordable fizzy drink that is “delicious” and available at your local supermarket.

Olly Smith, a British TV presenter and wine expert, announced on the latest episode of Saturday Kitchen that he had found the “best bargain” he has tasted this year.

He was tasked with finding an affordable drink that would pair with an apple dessert baked by London-based Ukrainian chef Olia Hercules.

Olly’s choice was the Arestel Cava Semi Seco from Lidl, priced at just £5.99.

This is 40 percent cheaper than Freixenet’s best-known Cordon Negro Brut Cava.

He said: “With a lot of cakes, fizz is a really good option, but not your average dry fizz, you want something that isn’t dry or a little bit sweeter.”

The award stunned presenter Matt Tebbut, who said: “Wow.”

The drink is produced in Spain and is made in the same way as traditional French champagne, Olly said.

What makes the drink so special, however, is that they added a dose of “cane sugar and a little wine to keep it from being dry,” according to Olly.

£6. It’s dangerously drinkable, it’s so fruity and very expressive.

This drink will put Cava on the map, Olly claims.

He said: “I think Cava is about to have his moment in the sun, so definitely get started on the Spanish stuff.

“Semi Seco has been around for a while, I don’t know why it’s not ‘in fashion’, I think now is the time to get on with it.”

Guests at the show were equally impressed after taking a sip of Lidl’s £5.99 fizz.

Radio 1 DJ Clara Amfo said: “This could be the love of my life.”

Cava is a sparkling wine from Spain, mainly produced in Catalonia and uses native grapes.

It is known to be fruitier than champagne and can contain citrus, apple and floral notes.

Shoppers will have to rush to their nearest Lidl, which you can find via the store locator, to get their hands on the fizz before it runs out.

It received a 3.4 out of 5 from more than 2,000 reviewers on wine site Vivino, including 175 five-star reviews.

It received fewer than 100 one-star reviews from drinkers less impressed with the taste than Olly, and more than 1,000 people gave it three stars.

It comes after Aldi’s £14.99 Haysmith’s Seville Orange and Persian Lime Gin won gold at The World Gin Awards.

And Lidl has reduced the price of its champagne, which customers have labeled ‘better than Moet’.

However, if you enjoy an alcoholic drink every now and then, make sure you still drink responsibly.
