It sank in the North Sea almost 700 years ago, ravaged by rough weather.

But scientists are searching for what’s left of Ravenser Odd, a short-lived medieval town on an island in the Humber estuary.

Described as ‘Yorkshire’s Atlantis’, the important coastal town – which is the subject of a new exhibition in Hull – flourished in the late 13th century.

It lay just west of Spurn Point, the very tip of the sinuous peninsula that separates the North Sea and the Humber Estuary.

Since 2021, two Hull academics have been conducting research into the city’s remains on the seabed using high-resolution seabed mapping equipment.

What was strange about Ravenser?

Ravenser Odd was a prosperous town on an island at the mouth of the Humber Estuary.

It was founded in the mid-13th century and had more than 100 houses and a thriving market on April 1, 1299, when it was granted city rights.

But by the mid-13th century, storms and strong tidal currents began to take their toll on the settlement.

It was gradually abandoned before disappearing into the sea around 1360.

One of them is Dr Steve Simmons, a lecturer in energy and environment at the University of Hull, who said Ravenser Odd was once a ‘prosperous settlement’.

They hope to recover any remnants of the city, such as the foundations of the sea wall and the harbour, but so far they have had no success.

“Despite its relative importance in 1299, Ravenser Odd is largely forgotten today – because it disappeared, swallowed up by the North Sea,” said Dr. Simmons in an article for The conversation.

“Conditions in the estuary make it difficult to search for traces of the lost city.”

Both Ravenser Odd and its neighbor, Hull, received their charters from Edward I on the same day: April 1, 1299.

The charter made Ravenser Odd a recognized municipality and exempted merchants from certain taxes.

This allowed the city to build its own court, prison and chapel.

At its peak it had around 100 houses and a thriving market – and was an even more important port than Hull further up the Humber.

Within about half a century, the city’s fortunes faded.

‘By the mid-14th century, the storms and strong tidal currents of the North Sea began to take their toll on the settlement,’ said Dr Simmons.

‘A devastating blow was dealt in 1362 by the storm surge of the Sint-Marcellus flood, after which the city began to be abandoned.’

A historical map shows that other islands west of the Spurn Peninsula were also lost, with names such as Orwithfleet and Sunthorpe, but Ravenser Odd was the largest.

As a result of coastal erosion, it is not likely that entire islands will be weakened and lost over time, Dr. Simmons warns.

The Holderness coastline, north of the Spurn Peninsula, is the fastest eroding coastline in Europe.

The crumbling cliffs of soft boulder clay are retreating at an average rate of 2 meters per year.

Ravenser Odd is the subject of a new exhibition at the Hull History Center running until Thursday 30 May.

It contains important documents, including maps of medieval Hull and the original charters of Hull and Ravenser Odd, borrowed from the National Archives.

“Despite its proximity to Hull, the story of Ravenser Odd is relatively unknown,” says councilor Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for Leisure and Culture.

‘An understanding of the Ravenser story and its implications for the wider Humber will enable Hull people to reflect on their own 800 years of maritime history and the opportunities to explore themes around Hull’s own development.

‘This exhibition will tell the story in many different ways and capture the imagination of residents, children and young people.’

While there is little doubt based on contemporary evidence that Ravenser Odd existed, the same cannot be said about Atlantis to which it is being compared.

It is said that the so-called ancient city was destroyed and submerged under the Atlantic Ocean, but that is not the case it is generally believed to have been invented by the Greek philosopher Plato.

Last year, another research team revealed that they had found the German equivalent of Atlantis: the city of Rungholt, which was sunk by a storm in 1362.

Is this the first look at a lost civilization linked to Atlantis? Archaeologists in Spain discover 2,500-year-old statues that may resemble the faces of an ancient society that mysteriously disappeared

Archaeologists in Spain have discovered 2,500-year-old statues that resemble the faces of a prosperous yet mysterious ancient society.

Five stone busts from the 5th century BC were found in Casas del Turuñuelo, a historical monument in Guareña, southern Spain.

The site was built by the Tartessos – a civilization that settled on the southern Iberian Peninsula about 3,000 years ago.

But the Tartessos have inexplicably disappeared – and what they looked like has long been a matter of speculation.

Tartessos has been associated with Atlantis – a mythical ancient city that was said to be destroyed and submerged under the Atlantic Ocean.

On a drunken evening in 2019, Abigail Morris and Georgia Davies ran into a discount store in Brixton, south London, and bought a cheap notebook to write down their band’s manifesto.

At the time, the rock group, then called the Dinner Party, had only three members and had never rehearsed any songs. But Morris and Davies – the singer and bassist – knew exactly what they wanted to look and sound like: ‘Gothic’, ‘Indulgent’ and ‘Decadence’ were at the top of their list.

As the English literature students moved from pub to pub, they added their proclamation, including modest ambitions (playing shows with hip British bands) and grander goals (“We want to be role models for younger girls”).

Later that evening, Morris accidentally cut himself on a broken glass and dripped blood on the notepad. “I thought, ‘This is perfect!’” Davies recalled in a recent interview. The splashes highlighted the pair’s vision for a bond that balances between the beautiful and the grotesque.

About four years later, this rigorous but playful approach has helped Davies and Morris achieve some of their goals. The theatrical rock group, now called The Last Dinner Party, has become Britain’s buzziest new band this year.

In January, the group – whose sound is often compared to the compelling pop of Florence + the Machine – launched topped the BBC’s Sound of 2024a much-watched annual poll, in which Adele and PinkPantheress were previously anointed.

At a time when rock bands are often vying for attention, the Last Dinner Party has broken through by taking a surprisingly traditional route, prioritizing touring rather than producing social media-focused hits. A North American tour kicks off Thursday, including sold-out dates at New York’s Webster Hall on March 26 and Brooklyn Steel the next day, as well as the Coachella festival in April.

Morris said this approach, which has taken the band from playing pubs to sold-out 5,000-capacity London theaters, would help them sustain a career. “It doesn’t have a long life when a viral song gets blown up,” she said. “That’s not how you build a community.”

However, a striking visual aesthetic can help. The band’s fashion sense is magpie-like, drawing inspiration from different historical eras and fantastical styles. Last fall, the group set dress codes for a UK tour and although that has come to an end, dozens of younger audience members at a recent gig in London donned outfits including floral headdresses and corsets inspired by the band’s theatrical imagery.

Even those who didn’t dress up seemed all in. Comedian Kerry Godliman, 50, said she became a fan after her daughter returned from a festival and raved about the group. “I love the grandeur of it, the camp archness of it, the theatricality of it,” Godliman said. The fact that the band consists of women and a non-binary person is “still such a rare thing,” she added.

After releasing his debut single, an expletive-filled love song called “nothing matters”, in the spring of 2023, the rise of the Last Dinner Party in Britain has been so rapid that some observers on social media have accused its members – all of whom are in their mid-20s – of being “industry factories” brought together by through reports. label executives.

Roberts, the guitarist, said she found such suggestions “pretty sad,” as if people “don’t want to believe that a young female and non-binary band can be successful.” The reality is less dramatic, Morris added: She’s been an aspiring rock star since her teenage years at a Catholic school, where she developed “a crushing need to be adored by everyone at all times and at all costs.”

She met Davies at university in London; the other three band members were also music-obsessed students in the British capital, who Morris and Davies gradually brought into their group.

With Britain going in and out of lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, the up-and-coming band was initially unable to perform live, instead honing their sound: moody, grand indie pop, topped by Morris’ compelling vocals. By the time of the first show in November 2021, Morris said the members had “rehearsed for so long that we were fully formed.” At his fourth show, in a remote location on an industrial estate in south London, record labels flooded the band with messages. (It eventually signed with a major, Island Records, and created a 70-page presentation to explain its vision to the label’s marketing team.)

James Ford, who has worked with Depeche Mode, Jessie Ware and Blur, produced the group’s debut, ‘Prelude to Ecstasy’, which was released last month. He said in an interview that when he walked into the studio and saw the band members with a full string section and horn section, he thought, “I haven’t seen this kind of conviction from a band, nor from the people behind them.” , long time.”

“In the back of my mind I was thinking, this is either going to go really well or it’s going to be a total disaster,” he added.

Tara Richardson, the band’s manager, said the group’s theatricality gives fans relief from the bleak political and economic climate in Britain at the moment. “People want escapism,” she said: “They need an escape.”

In interviews in a Mediterranean cafe in north London, four members of the group emphasized that while their music is escapist, it is not removed from contemporary concerns. The album contains “The feminine urge”, with lyrics mocking men who think women only exist for their entertainment, and “Beautiful boy”, attacking male privilege. “These aren’t just corsets,” Morris said. “It’s Trojan Horse pop music.”

A rapid rise in music can be mind-boggling. Mayland, the guitarist, said some recent experiences, such as attending awards shows, had felt like living “in a TV, this isn’t real.”

But Morris and Davies, the band’s first two members, said they remained focused on the artistic vision they envisioned on that drunken night in Brixton.

“It’s fun to commit to something and follow it to its logical extreme,” Davies said. For now, it will be the world’s favorite new band.

She had been scheduled to make a fourth competition appearance in Paris this summer, but after giving birth to her second child last July, she has now announced that will not happen.

Laura, whose surname was Trott before she married former cyclist and Britain’s only other more decorated Olympian, Sir Jason Kenny, in 2016, said BBC breakfast: “I always knew deep down that I would know when it was the right time.

“I had a blast, but now it’s time for me to hang up that bike.”

Laura continued: “It’s been in my head for a while: the sacrifices you have to make when you have to leave the kids and your family at home are really quite big and it’s a really big decision to make.

“I found it increasingly difficult. More and more people were asking me what races I was doing, what training camps I was doing – I ultimately didn’t want to go and that’s what it came down to.

“I knew it as soon as I got those feelings. When I said to Jase, ‘I don’t think I want to cycle anymore,’ I started to feel relief.”

The couple welcomed their first child, a boy named Albie, in 2017, but returned to cycling because she wanted to prove that athletes were capable of balancing both motherhood and the demands of the sport.

Laura suffered a miscarriage in 2021 and an ectopic pregnancy months later before their second child, a boy named Monty, was born in 2023.

She triumphed in London, Rio and Tokyo to become Britain’s most successful female Olympian ever.

Laura was part of the team pursuit quartet that claimed gold at London 2012, before winning another in the omnium.

Olympic leaders unveil medals for Paris 2024, with each prize containing a ‘piece of the Eiffel Tower’

She repeated this feat in Rio with two more golds in the same events.

And in Tokyo she followed up silver in the team pursuit with a dominant gold in the team race, together with good friend Katie Archibald.

In November, she announced she was planning a shock return to try to compete in Paris.

However, British Cycling’s performance director Stephen Park recently revealed that the chance of that happening was only a “remote chance”.

Laura added: “I started to have hesitant feelings.

“To win another gold medal, as much as I would love to do that, it didn’t give me the energy I wanted anymore, but it just wasn’t.

“I didn’t think, ‘I really want to go on and win one.’ I thought, ‘I really want to stay home with the kids’.”

In addition to Olympic success, the star is also a fourteen-time European champion and won three medals, including two golds, at the Commonwealth Games.

Now she says she is “open to anything and everything” after retiring from the job.

Laura added: “Nothing is set in stone, but there are things I’m so interested in.

“Something to help the younger generation, whether that could be some kind of academy.

“I could never become a coach because that’s just too much pressure for me, but maybe something in the background that gives the young people the opportunities that I had.”

Britain’s richest gypsy doesn’t shy away from splashing out his millions – and his latest lavish holiday was no exception.

Alfie Best – whose net worth was a whopping £745million this year – spent a glamorous week on his £9million superyacht, sailing around Cannes and meeting celebs.

The real estate mogul enjoyed the luxurious lifestyle, enjoying meals prepared by his private chef and taking jet boat lessons from a private teacher he had on board.

But he didn’t stop working completely during his holiday, with the scammer regularly sneaking off to answer Zoom calls home.

Alfie’s astonishing wealth comes from his residential park empire Wyldecrest Parks, which made £32 million last year alone.

As a well-deserved break, he took daughter Elizabeth and son Alfie Jr to Cannes, where his yacht – named Wyldecrest after the company that made his fortune – is moored.

Alfie told The Sun: “We chartered the yacht around Monaco, Cannes and St. Tropez.

“I won’t lie to you, I was on Zoom in the afternoon. I really enjoyed sitting down for a really good lunch and dinner.

“There’s a chef on board.”

Not content with floating on water, Alfie arranged for a private tutor to teach him how to float in the air in jet-powered boots.

His judgment? “Honestly, terrifying,” Alfie said.

“I’m a bit of a thrill seeker, I can’t say I’m a rollercoaster person.”

Alfie spent days touring the picturesque bay of Cannes.

He added: “We went to the island of Cannes – there is a restaurant there that you can only go to if you have a yacht.

“I’ve been there in the past and Elton John was there jamming. It’s very surreal.

“I have two Sea-Doos on the yacht – they’re like jet-powered boards that take you underwater and around.

“Dolphins swam next to us.”

Alfie talked about a typical day on holiday.

“I got up around 9 a.m. Then I had breakfast upstairs around 9:30,” he said.

“Waking up at 9 a.m. is kind of lazy for me. Then I check my emails to see if there are any calls that need to be made.

‘Then the boat would take us to the coast and we would explore the city for two hours.

“Come back, go out with Sea-Doos, or take the paddleboard.

“Sometimes we would take out a donut and have it pulled by the speedboat we had with us.

“Then at 4 p.m. I do two hours of mentoring with other companies.

“I spent the afternoon sunbathing before having dinner on the yacht upstairs at 7pm.”

And Alfie’s luxury trip didn’t come cheap.

He added: “To take the yacht for a week would cost around £85,000 – plus fuel and mooring it works out to around £100,000.”

Alfie’s yacht is an exclusive Sunseeker 90 Ocean and features a watersports speedboat tender and a jet ski – both housed in the yacht’s own private dipping jetty.

On board there is luxurious accommodation for eight guests, plus a lounge and swimming platform at water level.

Photos show a beautiful dining area suitable for eight people.

Glamorous sleeping quarters ensure a good night’s sleep on board and beautiful works of art hang above the bed.

The bathroom is fully equipped with a window overlooking the sea from the shower.

An outdoor seating area allows guests to dine with the sound of the waves amid the sea air.

A GYPSY who built his empire from scratch has revealed a three-step method anyone can use to make millions.

Billionaire Alfie Best, 53, has worked his way to wealth for decades, and has had many setbacks along the way.

But Alfie’s journey to become known as Britain’s richest gypsy has made him want to inspire others.

And now he is offering the British a helping hand by giving advice on how to reach the top financially.

Alfie told The Sun: “Don’t get me wrong, success comes and goes – it could be with us today, it could leave us tomorrow and I’m very aware of that.

“We always have to keep working on it, but if we want it bad enough, we will be there to make it happen with them.”

He added that he believes people already need the right “mindset.”

The 53-year-old continued: “We don’t all have to be David Beckham, Tyson Fury, Ronaldo – we don’t all have to be because we’re not built as athletes.

“We’re all built in different ways. You know we have to do what we love because you’ll never work another day. It’s so true: If you don’t love it, don’t do it.”

Alfie says there are three key steps people can take to become millionaires – and he knows it works.

The father explained that people should “take a step back, not forward” – analyzing where you are with simple cash flow; look at where the losses are going out and where the revenue streams are coming in.

He said: ‘Because what’s happening in today’s society, companies are all trying to get us on the merry-go-round of making monthly payments on our money, our insurance, our mortgages and our rent.

A look inside Britain’s richest gypsy Alfie Best’s lavish £100,000 superyacht holiday, from jetpack rides to dinner with Elton John

“It’s about conditioning yourself and once you’ve done that, look at where the revenue comes from and where you can massage that to increase it and get that business for your customers.”

Alfie explained that he’s been getting that advice in speeches for years – and one man recently revealed that he had followed it, and it has paid off.

The billionaire explained that he gave a speech in Dubai last year and there was a question and answer session at the end – then a man from London stood up.

Alfie continued: “He had come there to invest in property in Dubai.

“He said, ‘You may not remember me, but you gave a speech two years ago in Birmingham. I was in an extremely difficult position and my company was about to go bankrupt. You didn’t know that at the time, but I asked you what you wanted to do.” would do if there was a particular difficult time.’

Three-step method for millions

  • Analyze where you stand with a simple cash flow
  • See where the losses go
  • Look at where the revenue streams are coming in

“And I remember that was the advice I gave him.”

The billionaire explained that the man then thanked him and said his “business is now thriving, not just barely surviving.”

Alfie says it was then that he decided he wanted to make a difference in people – and that’s why he’s launching now Best prosperity network.

He explained that it is an initiative for people who want to know how to generate a better income, adding: “I am going to take it upon myself to do my utmost to encourage everyone to create a better life for themselves and the people around them create. “

When asked if he thought money and success could lead to happiness, the father said yes.

“When you become successful, when you feel it, you feel proud, and when you achieve success, you think you have a purpose.

“Moreover, most importantly, happiness cannot be born, nor fulfillment.

“But I’d rather cry in a Rolls Royce than on a bike.”

A NIGHTMARE neighbor who built ‘Britain’s largest man cave’ has been given permission to build a second adjacent ‘party house’ as a holiday let.

Millionaire Graham Wildin, 70, defied court orders and even served jail time amid seething protest from residents over his 10,000 sq ft leisure complex at his home in Cinderford, Gloucestershire.

The hedonistic space was built in 2014 despite complaints about parking issues, bubbling hot tubs and screeching saxophone playing.

The striking man cave had a bowling alley, casino and cinema, but never received planning permission.

However, the pensioner has now been given the temporary green light for an adjacent ‘party house’ in his six-bedroom property.

Paradise Trustees, who the Local Democracy Reporting Service says are related to Mr Wildin, have applied to the Forest of Dean District Council.

They requested retroactive permission to convert the use of the home into a holiday rental.

According to the LDRS, a handful of local residents and Cinderford Town Council opposed the development management committee on Wednesday.

Despite the concerns, district councilors recommended that the plans be temporarily approved until January 2026.

They said it will be able to properly assess the highway impact and noise effects of its use.

Michael Merrill, 51, built two timber-clad properties on his land in the rural village of Wirsall, Cheshire, one for his immediate family and one for his in-laws.

Neighbors have criticized the father for openly defying planning laws in the decade-long battle with Cheshire East Council.

One said: “He is arrogant.

‘He thinks the planning laws don’t apply to him and he can do whatever he wants.

“This has been a real saga and it seems to continue.”

A new survey has named the Princess of Wales as Britain’s favorite royal as Harry and Meghan’s popularity falls.

The poll – which was conducted before the publication of the controversial edited Mother’s Day photo – found that 38 percent of Britons liked Kate Middleton the most.

However, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s popularity has fallen by three points – with Harry on 11 percent and Meghan on seven percent.

The Princess of Wales has been the subject of intense speculation and conspiracy theories in recent weeks – and found herself in a social media firestorm after admitting to editing a family photo for Mother’s Day.

Royal insiders have claimed she wants to move on from the firestorm caused by the image and is struggling with its aftermath.

The new poll shows that the princess is especially popular among women: 44 percent prefer her, compared to 32 percent of men.

Half of 55 to 75 year olds also named Kate as their favorite, according to the Ipsos survey commissioned by Ipsos. The standard.

Of those aged 35 to 54, 37 percent named the princess as their first choice, along with 28 percent of those aged 18 to 34.

Kate’s husband comes in second, with William favored by 36 percent, followed by Princess Anne with 26 percent.

King Charles and Queen Camilla were only the favorite of 12 percent of Brits surveyed – a rise of two points since the last survey.

Social media sleuths were already wondering where she was before the explosive Mother’s Day photo, which saw six of the world’s top photo agencies sensationally withdraw the photo from their nets and libraries, fearing the ‘source manipulated the image’.

The princess has been recovering from surgery since January, but her absence from the public eye prompted conspiracy theorists to postulate.

But when a photo of Kate with her children was posted on Mother’s Day, the speculation took on a whole new form.

Astute social media users pointed out a plethora of problems with the image – and it was withdrawn by photo agencies shortly afterwards.

The princess then posted an apology for the confusion caused and admitted that she had edited the family photo.

Kate is reportedly recovering well from her major abdominal surgery and is expected to be back by Easter, but sources say she needs to be left alone to put her recovery first.

She publicly took the blame for the family photo released by Kensington Palace on Sunday, while apologizing for the “confusion.”

MailOnline identified 16 separate edits, including issues with the princess’s jeans zipper and right hand – amid claims the photo had been digitally altered.

Just hours after her apology, Kate was pictured with her husband leaving Windsor Castle as he headed to Westminster Abbey or the annual Commonwealth Day service.

But instead of an extraordinary return to royal duties, MailOnline understands Kate was heading to a private appointment instead.

Sources within royal circles are warning of the negative impact rumors could have on the future queen as she recovers from her major surgery in January.

“It’s an awful lot to be under all this public scrutiny when you’re recovering from major surgery,” one person told US news site Page Six.

‘The rumor mill – especially on social media – has gone out of control, but Kate is recovering well and will be back by Easter. She just needs to be left alone.”

Another insider added: ‘I’m worried about all this attention on Catherine. She didn’t look happy at all in the car on Monday.’

Despite calls for the original image to be published, Kensington Palace insisted the unedited photo of Kate and her children would not be reissued.

Royal commentator Jennie Bond suggested Kate ‘must now feel intense pressure when seen in public’ after her major surgery in January.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle broke their silence on the photo editing scandal, denying claims they said the Duchess would ‘never make that mistake’.

Amid mounting speculation surrounding the Mother’s Day image of Kate and her children, which was released to the world by Kensington Palace on Sunday, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Archewell Foundation spoke out and denied that any official representative of the couple had done that. comments on the controversy on page six.

Speaking to Newsweek, the spokesperson took issue with quotes published by the newspaper stating that a source “close to Prince William, Harry and his wife” had not come “from us.”

However, Archewell’s official spokesperson has now insisted to Newsweek that the information “did not come from us,” saying simply: “As far as Page Six is concerned, it did not come from us.”

The statement marks the first time Harry, 39, and his wife have officially discussed the photo editing controversy in any official capacity.

Halifax is lowering the maximum working age for mortgage applicants from 75 to 70.

There is a maximum working age of 70 for:

  • Remortgage applications for any capital increase/additional loans
  • Some purchase and remortgage applications due to the credit score level achieved and overall credit profile.

The move could force thousands of borrowers to shorten the length of their current mortgage term, dramatically increasing their monthly payments.

Most lenders only allow borrowers to take out a mortgage as long as they plan to work.

Halifax’s decision to lower the applicable working age will now reduce the amount of time someone can borrow by five years.

It marks a major turnaround for Britain’s biggest lender, which only raised the maximum working age for mortgages to 75 in August last year.

Darryl Dhoffer, consultant at The Mortgage Expert, told news agency Newspage: ‘This is outrageous. Halifax appears to be turning on the borrowers who need them most.

“Halifax turns a blind eye to the struggles of the average person.

“High mortgage rates and shorter terms are a recipe for disaster, pushing even more borrowers into debt and hardship.

“They only recently extended it to 75, so it seems a bit strange to bring it back to 70 now.

Many of the major high street lenders, including Nationwide and NatWest, already have a maximum age limit of 75.

But others, including Barclays, have a lower age of 70.

A spokesperson for Halifax Intermediaries said: “These changes have been made as part of a regular review of our lending criteria and will ensure we can continue to lend responsibly to a wide range of customers.

“For all other applications we continue to apply a maximum working age of 75.”

The change will take effect from Monday, March 18.

How to get the best deal on your mortgage

If you’re looking for a traditional mortgage type, getting the best rates depends entirely on what’s available at any given time.

There are several ways to get the best deal.

Typically, the larger the down payment, the lower the interest rate you can get.

If you take out a new mortgage and your Loan-to-Value ratio (LTV) has changed, you will have access to better rates than before.

Your LTV decreases if your outstanding mortgage is lower and/or the value of your home is higher.

A change in your credit score or a better salary can also help you access better rates.

And if you’re nearing the end of a standing deal soon, it’s worth looking for new deals now.

You can sometimes lock in current deals up to six months before your current deal expires.

If you leave a fixed deal early, you’ll typically be charged an exit fee, so you’ll want to avoid these additional fees.

But depending on the cost and how much you can save by switching or staying, it may be worth leaving the deal, but compare the costs first.

Use one to find the best deal Mortgage comparison tool to see what’s available.

You can also contact a mortgage broker who can compare a much wider range of offers for you.

Some charge an additional fee, but there are plenty who provide free advice and are paid only on the lender’s commission.

You will also need to consider mortgage costs, although some may not have any costs at all.

You can add the costs (sometimes more than € 1,000) to the costs of the mortgage, but keep in mind that you will pay interest on it and will therefore cost more in the long term.

You can use a mortgage calculator to see how much you can borrow.

Please note that you will also need to meet the lender’s strict criteria, including affordability checks and viewing your credit file.

You may also need to provide documents such as utility bills, proof of benefits, your last three months’ pay slips, passports and bank statements.

What mortgage assistance is available?

As soon as you think you might have a problem with your monthly mortgage payment (whether you can’t pay anything, can’t make all your monthly payments, or can’t pay it on time), contact your lender immediately.

They have certain arrangements in place to help you if you are having a hard time.

Under the government’s Mortgage Regulations, you can temporarily request to convert your mortgage to an interest-only mortgage, or extend your term to reduce monthly payments.

You do not need to submit further income information or share monthly spending obligations; you can simply ask your lender to make the switch.

And it won’t affect your credit score for six months if you choose to take the offer.

If someone taking advantage of the temporary measures decides to return to their original plan within six months, they are free to do so.

Ask your lender about the breathing space arrangement if you feel that payments are unaffordable.

Under the breather program, no debts will accrue interest and no fees will be added for 60 days.

You are protected against collection agencies and bailiffs.

You may also be able to request a payment holiday; then you don’t have to pay anything.

However, interest and fees may still accrue, and missed payments will need to be made in the future.

Each company has different policies, so you will need to contact us to find out what support is available to you.

Mortgage Interest Support or SMI helps people on Universal Credit (and other benefits) by giving them a low interest loan.

The assistance goes toward mortgage payments or loans taken out to help repair any damage to the home.

SMI is a loan that you must repay with interest when you sell your home.

You will receive help with paying the interest on a maximum of € 200,000 of your loan or mortgage.

But you only get a maximum of £100,000 if you get pension credit.

Many local municipalities have welfare assistance programs to help struggling families.

The assistance available varies, but you can get free cash, food stamps, and help with bills like rent and utilities.

Check with your municipality whether you are eligible and what you can claim.

And of course it is always worth checking whether you are entitled to all available benefits.

Entitlement is free calculator calculates whether you are eligible for various benefits, tax credits and Universal Credit.

Debt charity StepChange also has a benefits checker that is free to use and does not record your results.
