A few years ago, a Google employee sent an email to thousands of her colleagues: What if you spent one night a week without technology for six weeks?

The email was from Laura Mae Martin, Google’s executive productivity advisor, a role created in part to help staff members maintain healthier relationships with their gadgets and apps. After sending the note, Ms. Martin was inundated with responses from colleagues eager to take a break from some of the products they had helped build. Thousands of employees have since taken part in the annual “No-Tech Tuesday Night Challenge,” said Ms. Martin, author of the forthcoming book “Uptime: A Practical Guide to Personal Productivity and Well-Being.”

The problem she was trying to solve isn’t unique to Google employees. A survey found that most Americans say they spend too much time on it on their phones. But dramatic solutions—a digital detox, a phone downgrade, or a complete exit from social media—can feel impractical.

Is it possible to have a healthy relationship with technology while still using it every day? Fortunately, according to experts, the answer is a resounding yes.

You know that urge you get to reach for your phone without even realizing it? And then, before you know it, you’re on a social media binge for an hour?

If you want to coexist peacefully with technology, you have to get a grip on those impulses. Start by noticing when you feel the urge to pick up your phone or open social media in your browser window, says Richard J. Davidson, the founder and director of the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

By becoming aware of what you’re about to do, you interrupt automatic behavior and wake up the part of your brain that regulates self-control, he said. If one research article suggests that awareness of your actions can help you curb bad habits.

“When you become aware of the urge, just ask yourself, ‘Do I really have to do this?’” said Dr. Davidson.

Asking that question might help you pause, think about it, and resist the temptation to check your device. And let’s be realistic: sometimes you might decide to spend some screen time. But being aware of your urges can help you become more intentional about your habits, Dr. Davidson said.

Dr. Anna Lembke, a professor of psychiatry and addiction medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, said one of the biggest problems with smartphones is what she calls “texting while running to catch a bus.” Using our devices while we’re on the go (walking from meeting to meeting, taking a child to school, or taking the bus) can make us feel disconnected from our lives, says Dr. Lembke.

“We are missing out on a wealth of information and cues in the world around us, as well as depriving ourselves of the ability to process and interpret what we have experienced,” she said.

One way to create harmony with your technology is to limit your phone use while on the road. Out for a walk? Turn off your notifications. Are you going to get a coffee? Leave your phone on your desk. If you’re feeling brave, try turning off your phone while you’re out and about, said Dr. Lembke, who wrote “Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence.” It won’t buzz with notifications, texts, or phone calls, which Dr. Lembke said it could help you focus on the world around you.

Extended vacations with your gadgets may not be possible. But if you’re trying to spend less time staring at your screens, 10- or 15-minute breaks may be a more practical option, says Dr. Adam Gazzaley, a neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco and author of “The Distracted Mind: Old Brains in a High-Tech World.” You can take a short walk, close your eyes, work on a puzzle or read a book.

Another trick: put tech breaks on your calendar, said Dr. Gazzaley. It may feel strange to plan something like “taking a phone-free walk,” but that shouldn’t happen if it’s a priority, he said.

Don’t rely solely on your willpower to keep screen time down, says James A. Roberts, a consumer behavior expert at Baylor University. Instead, adjust your environment.

“Anything you can do to create an environment where you can move away from the phone as easily as possible will be helpful,” says Dr. Roberts, who wrote “Too Much of a Good Thing: Are You Addicted to Your Smartphone?”

Here are a few things you can try:

  • Buy an alarm clock. A phone alarm forces you to pick up your device when you wake up, making it far too easy to start checking email and alerts, Dr. Roberts said. But with a standalone alarm clock, you can leave your phone untouched until you decide it’s time to dive in.

  • Appoint an accountability partner. Dr. Roberts suggested asking a family member or friend to remind you to put down your device if you’ve been using it for too long, if someone is trying to have a conversation with you, or at other times when it’s interfering with your life. environment disrupted. offline world.

  • Delete social media from your phone. To manage social media use without stopping it altogether, make it less accessible, Dr. Roberts said. One tip he suggested is to delete it from your phone but keep it on your computer so you can still use it for work or to keep in touch with family and friends.

One thing the experts agreed on: to build a healthy relationship with technology, you need to control it, not the other way around. Think of your gadgets as tools that you decide how to use.

“Make it work for you, not against you,” says Ms. Martin, the productivity expert at Google. “Whether it’s an email program or your dishwasher, it’s the intention behind the way you use it that really makes the big difference.”

One thing is certain – no one who knew Luke D’Wit had the slightest inkling that a man they described as ‘kind and gentle’ and a ‘boring computer geek’ was capable of one murder, let alone a double killing.

After all, the 34-year-old didn’t drink, barely socialised and spent much of his spare time at his home in West Mersea, Essex, playing computer simulation games that were a world away from the violent ones so often enjoyed by others his age.

Above all else, he appeared entirely disinterested in money, and even spent some of his spare time volunteering for local clubs and charities.

Yet the chilling fact remains that on April 7 last year this same Luke D’Wit slipped a fatal dose of the powerful prescription opioid fentanyl into the drinks of Stephen and Carol Baxter, a kindly and wealthy couple who had befriended the oddball after he began doing IT work for their fitted shower mat firm.

And it is D’Wit who Detective Superintendent Rob Kirby, the head of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate which investigated the couple’s macabre deaths, this week described as both ‘cold and calculating’ and ‘one of the most dangerous men I have come across.’

The senior detective on the case described Luke D’Wit, pictured, as ‘cold and calculating’ and ‘one of the most dangerous men I have come across’

So dangerous, indeed, that had he not been convicted, Det Supt Kirby believes he was ripe to offend again. ‘I have absolutely no doubt,’ he added. ‘That had he not been caught he would have gone on to commit further murders.’

How on earth, then, did this apparently mild-mannered website builder morph into a killer so cold-hearted that, as the jury heard, he even positioned a mobile phone at the Baxters’ home to stream live footage from their conservatory to a home security app on one of his own phones?

This allowed him to watch the oblivious couple dying in front of his eyes from the fatal dose of fentanyl he had administered, before sneaking back into the house to remove any incriminating evidence such as contaminated glasses.

He then wrote a codicil to the Baxters’ wills that would make him a director of their company Cazsplash Ltd, ensuring he would be a beneficiary of their extensive savings.

Yet as the Mail can reveal today, some of those who know him believe his motivation may have been even more sinister, rooted in a desire to ‘get one over’ on those who had written him off and commit the ‘perfect crime.’

‘He thought he was cleverer than most people and was sometimes frustrated that friends had moved on to better things,’ one of them told the Mail. ‘It was like he resented that his [anti-social] personality had got in the way.’

Certainly, D’Wit had failed to make much of his life by the time his path crossed with that of the Baxters.

He grew up as an only child with his dustman father Vernon and mother Jan in a cottage in Churchfields, West Mersea, and attended Thomas Lord Audley School in nearby Colchester before studying for a computer technology degree at the University of Essex.

After university, while friends escaped the close-knit community of Mersea Island in Essex for more exciting lives elsewhere, D’Wit drifted between jobs, working for a garden furniture company in Clacton, and later a furniture company in Colchester before, aged 22, setting up a website design company called Stand Out Studios Ltd with a friend.

It was dissolved 17 months later. ‘They designed a logo and that was it. I don’t think they even found any clients,’ one friend who knew D’Wit at the time told the Mail.

‘Luke thought that having his own website development firm was a status symbol… But it was never a proper company.’

His domestic life was barely more dynamic, with one friend revealing that as his contemporaries got into serious relationships and bought their own houses, the quietly spoken D’Wit remained at the family home with his mother – even, astonishingly, sharing a bedroom with her, with blue sheets for his bed and pink for hers.

‘He was definitely a bit of a mummy’s boy and a home boy,’ D’Wit’s former best friend, who did not want to be named, confided this week. ‘He did not seem to have any ambition and he never really progressed with his life.’

That included his social life: Uninterested in drinking culture, he eschewed the pubs and clubs popular with his peers and seemed little interested in romantic relationships.

‘A lot of us thought he was asexual because he never showed any interest in girls, or guys,’ the friend added. ‘He was into fashion or how he looked. He never had any massive desires for a load of money, or cars or anything else.’

The one thing that did interest the thickset, curly-haired D’Wit was an ongoing passion for IT which, by his mid-twenties, led to him becoming involved in designing and managing websites for local businesses.

He used his skills to help others, creating a Facebook page for the Mersea Island Lions Club – a community group that helps the ‘less fortunate’ in the area – as well as doing website work for the charity’s annual road run event.

D’Wit’s work with local organisations included voluntary work for the Mersea Carnival.

Heidi Cornish, a character witness for the defence, also told the court he had helped at a soup kitchen, adding: ‘He loved to be involved where people need help.’

But it was his IT skills that brought him to the attention of Mr and Mrs Baxter around ten years ago.

At the time the couple had just moved to the area from London and were working hard to promote Cazsplash Ltd, which they had launched in 2012.

A former adult educator, Carol Baxter had come up with the idea for bathroom mats that fit around curved or corner shower units and held the intellectual property rights to those. The company also sold matching towel sets.

Her husband, whom she married in 2000, was a fellow director of Cazsplash, as well as being a senior executive with multi-million-pound international property firm Jonas Lang LaSalle, which has its headquarters in Chicago.

The couple had two children together, a daughter Ellie, and a son, Harry, while Carol also had two children from a previous relationship.

They enjoyed the fruits of their success, with a five-bedroom £1million home.

Perhaps D’Wit had his eye on all this from the start or perhaps that was an idea that developed later. Either way, over time he inveigled his way into the couple’s lives to such an extent that some neighbours mistakenly thought he was a carer for Carol, who had an auto-immune condition.

He was certainly trusted enough by the mother-of-four to assist her with her medication, as well as making the couple ‘disgusting’ smoothies that he said was for the benefit of their health.

It was via these smoothies that, the prosecution suggested, D’Wit administered his fatal dose of fentanyl.

‘It’s difficult to imagine any scenario where two individuals who are not prescribed fentanyl could accidentally contaminate their food with this drug,’ prosecutor Tracy Ayling KC told the jury.

D’Wit’s IT skills also enabled him to create fake online personas to ‘manipulate’ the family, among them bogus doctors.

One called ‘Andrea Bowden’ was based in Florida and gave helpful advice on alternative treatments for Mrs Baxter’s thyroid condition. Conveniently, ‘Andrea’ suggested limiting contact with the couple’s children.

The defendant claimed these inventions were masterminded by Stephen Baxter to encourage his wife to take her medication.

Mr Baxter, of course, was no longer around to defend himself. But in any case D’Wit’s ploy was flawed because there were so many responses to the bogus experts from an obviously ignorant Mr Baxter that it was clear he had no idea they didn’t exist.

Meanwhile, the jury were played a sinister recording in which D’Wit could be heard practising the voice of one of the false identities he had fabricated, this creation had to speak to Mrs Baxter.

Using a high-pitched voice, he said: ‘Hi Carol, it’s Jenny. It’s Cheryl’s sister… Yes, oh, so nice to finally speak to you after all these messages we’ve been doing.’

In court, D’Wit insisted he had been practising this in order to cheer Carol up.

Another disturbing detail uncovered by detectives was that D’Wit told the family he had bone cancer and was having scans.

They assumed this was in order to get the Baxters’ sympathy but it was a claim that was demolished in court where it emerged no hospitals had a record of him receiving treatment.

That D’Wit’s relationship with the unwitting Baxters was based on a number of lies was clear.

Even so, quite when he began to formulate the plan to murder them is unknown – although in court the jury learned that, in a curious twist, a 17mm metal tack had been found in Mrs Baxter’s digestive system in 2022 after she complained of pain.

The same tacks would later be found at D’Wit’s house. The jury was told to ‘consider how the tack got inside her’.

A family photo of D'Wit's victims, wealthy couple Stephen Baxter and his wife Carol

Perhaps D’Wit feared time was running out: At one point, the court learned, the Baxters appeared to tire of D’Wit’s almost permanent presence at their house and began to leave a box outside the front door so he could drop things off without going in.

According to Ellie they had even discussed sacking D’Wit.

Yet he managed to ingratiate himself further, running shopping errands for the couple and taking Mrs Baxter to West Mersea’s Flow Performance gym where they did fitness classes together. D’Wit, who had been overweight, shed several stone in this period.

Then, in April 2023, Luke D’Wit took the calculated decision to administer a deadly dose of fentanyl to the couple who had placed so much trust in him.

Two days later, in a scene fit for a horror film, their bodies – sitting in their favourite armchairs in the conservatory of their home – were found by a hysterical Ellie.

Given the apparent lack of suspicious circumstances, detectives initially suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

It was only when, weeks later, tests revealed fentanyl in the couple’s systems that a murder investigation was launched – with Ellie and her partner, Marcus Young, among the initial suspects.

Mercifully, detectives soon concluded they had had no part in the deaths, although Ellie still had to endure cross-examination in court, where she emotionally told the jury: ‘All I’m guilty of is loving my parents.’

Detectives’ sole attention was now on D’Wit, who had made a point of telling officers he was ‘almost like a son’ to his victims and in court described himself ‘literally running’ to the Baxters’ house when Ellie told him they had died.

Police found this fake will Luke D'Wit had prepared so that he could insert himself into the Baxters' business as a 'person with significant control'

Police found this fake will Luke D’Wit had prepared so that he could insert himself into the Baxters’ business as a ‘person with significant control’

He certainly had the means to commit the appalling crime: A search of his home five minutes away from the Baxters’ revealed an ample supply of fentanyl which had been used by his father, who died of cancer in 2021.

A makeshift pestle and mortar was also discovered, which may have been used to grind it up, along with other substances his victims unwittingly ingested, such as fatal levels of an antihistamine found in Mrs Baxter’s body.

Some of Carol Baxter’s jewellery was also found behind a sofa at his home.

Yet despite the verdict and the unfolding evidence in court of D’Wit’s dark side, there remains a sense of profound disbelief among those who know him that the man they always felt could not hurt a fly had been convicted of such a cruel and callous crime.

‘I was out walking my dog when my mum called me to say he had been charged, and I thought it must have been a different Luke D’Wit. I checked his address to convince myself it was really him,’ his ex-best friend said. ‘What came out in court was just shocking. I always thought he didn’t have an aggressive bone in his body.’

‘He just looked like your average computer geek,’ a neighbour of the Baxters added: ‘I still can’t believe that he did these murders. I just don’t see how he had it in him.’

As we have seen, tragically he did – with fatal and devastating consequences.

IF you don’t want your iPhone data stolen, turning on two settings can help.

Helsinki-based cybersecurity company F Secure warned in a new blog post that bad actors are constantly trying to steal unlocked iPhones.

“If you’ve never lost your smartphone or had it stolen, you probably know someone who has,” says the blogging is reading.

“iPhone theft is a lucrative business for criminals when devices are unlocked,” the report continued.

In such cases, the scary part is not that you have lost your device, but that your data and information could fall into the wrong hands.

Gaining access to your accounts could leave you out of money or even in trouble with the law, depending on the actions taken by threat actors.

To protect your data if your phone is stolen, F Secure has shared two settings that you should enable now.

PROTECTION AGAINST STOLEN DEVICE

Apple has released a new tool in recent months called Stolen Device Protection.

Stolen Device Protection “adds a layer of security when your iPhone is away from known locations, such as home or work,” according to Apple’s website.

It works by requiring biometric authentication for certain actions, such as accessing saved passwords or credit cards.

Most read in Phones and gadgets

SECURITY DELAY

A second feature of Stolen Device Protection that you should enable, says F Secure, is Security Delay.

If your iPhone is stolen, security delay prevents a thief from performing critical actions.

A little-known iPhone feature is a lifesaver if you lose your handset – X steps to turn it on today

The tool does this by enforcing a one-hour wait period before security actions like changing your Apple ID password.

After the hour is up, users will need to perform a second Face ID or Touch ID authentication.

During this period, users can mark their devices as lost and ensure their Apple account is safe.

HOW TO ENABLE PROTECTION AND SECURITY DELAY FOR STOLEN DEVICE

Stolen Device Protection is available with iOS 17.3 or later and must be enabled before the device is lost or stolen.

You can enable Stolen Device Protection from Settings:

  1. Go to Settings and then tap Face ID & Passcode.
  2. Enter your device passcode.
  3. Tap Stolen Device Protection, then turn Stolen Device Protection on or off.

Once you’ve done that, choose ‘Always’ under Require Security Delay.

By default, the additional security measures are only required if your iPhone is away from known locations.

SMARTPHONE owners have been warned about a new wave of scam calls using artificial intelligence to imitate familiar voices.

Known as deepfakes, this cloning technology works by replicating the voices of friends, family, and even customer service representatives.

HOW DO AI VOICE SCAMS WORK?

AI voting fraud is based on a two-step process: vote cloning and social engineering.

First, scammers acquire a sample of the voice of the target’s loved one.

This can be done in a variety of ways, including recording a phone call, extracting audio from social media posts, or even synthesizing speech from text messages.

With the voice sample in hand, scammers use AI voice cloning technology to create a near-perfect replica.

This is thanks to deepfake technology, which can analyze the pitch, cadence and even emotional inflections of the voice.

Once the voice is cloned, the scammer initiates the social engineering attack.

They call the target and use the cloned voice to build trust and rapport.

In some cases, the scammer claims to be a family member who is in a bad financial situation and needs money for an emergency.

In grandparent deepfake scams, the bad actors even pose as a grandchild under arrest and say they need money for bail.

A look into the world of romance scammers who deceive one in three Britons using deepfake videos

They can use details from social media profiles or past conversations to make their impersonation even more believable.

HOW TO STAY SAFE

Although AI voting fraud is a sophisticated threat, there are steps you can take to protect yourself.

The first thing you can do is be wary of unexpected phone calls, as scammers often take advantage of the element of surprise.

If you get a call from an unknown number or a known number with an unusual story, be careful.

You should not assume that a call is legitimate just because the voice sounds like someone you know.

In addition, if you receive a call from someone claiming to be from a company or organization, hang up and call them back on a number that you know is a legitimate number.

Do not rely on caller ID as scammers can spoof phone numbers.

It can also be helpful to create a safe word with family and friends, Keeper Security noted.

Establishing a secret code or phrase with your loved ones can be used to verify each other’s identities during suspicious calls.

If someone claiming to be a family member or friend can’t give the safe word, that’s a sign that something is wrong.

Many phone carriers also offer call blocking features that allow you to block unwanted calls.

Additionally, scammers can sometimes collect voice samples from social media posts, so be mindful of what you share online.

CONSUMERS may no longer have to pay top dollar for premium cameras and gaming on their next smartphone.

Technology giant Qualcomm has unveiled brand new technology to boost upcoming budget devices with the latest AI features normally reserved for expensive handsets.

New technology will appear in upcoming smartphonesCredit: Qualcomm

The company’s best chip is currently in mobile phones like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, which tend to have a higher price tag.

That’s why Qualcomm has come up with a new version – called Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 – to bring some premium features to the cheaper end of the market.

It is expected to appear on future handsets from the likes of Honor, iQOO, realme, Redmi and Xiaomi in the coming months.

So if you’re considering buying an expensive new smartphone because of all the new AI features, you might want to wait a little longer.

We’ve already seen how Snapdragon – Manchester United’s new shirt sponsor from the start of the 2024/25 season – has led the way in the arrival of massive new AI tools.

These include advanced photography features, like the ability to magically expand a photo you’ve already taken beyond what the lens can see.

Many of these tricks are performed on the device.

This means you don’t have to be online and none of your data has to go to the cloud, making things like AI voice assistants a lot more secure.

Qualcomm claims the new chip boosts audio capabilities with lossless high-definition sound and hyper-realistic mobile gaming.

With new devices launching within the next few months with the new chip on board, we won’t have to wait long to find out if the upgrade will pay off.

“We are excited to introduce the latest addition to our premium Snapdragon 8 lineup, our most premium mobile offering, bringing a host of exceptional, curated capabilities to more consumers,” said Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile phones. at Qualcomm Technologies.

Android fans are getting a big upgrade to turbo Wi-Fi and 5G on their next phone

The announcements come just a few weeks after Qualcomm unveiled a mega upgrade for Wi-Fi connectivity and faster 5G for upcoming smartphones.

A new system known as X80 5G Modem-RF uses AI to improve 5G speeds.

But that’s not all, as Qualcomm claims it will rid your phone of other common issues like service quality and coverage.

When can we expect 6G?

There is already talk about when the successor to 5G, 6G, will launch.

5G only landed in Britain in 2019 and is still not available everywhere.

And on top of that, 3G just started switching off in Britain this year.

John Smee, SVP Engineering at Qualcomm, explains that 6G is still a long way off, but plenty of research is being done.

“So 5G itself started in 2019/2020, so it will take us until 2030,” he told The Sun.

“The reason these Gs happen every ten years or so is because there is a tremendous amount of cumulative research that is being embedded and incorporated into the next generation.”

For now, we don’t know exactly what to expect from 6G, except that it will undoubtedly be faster for much larger data-hungry products like cars, and will also perform a lot smoother.

Mobile networks are evolutionary: you don’t really take out 4G to put in 5G, but the kit is gradually upgraded.

Right now, 5G is being upgraded to something called 5G Advanced, which has much greater capacity and coverage.

COMPANY called Nothing brought a breath of fresh air to the busy smartphone scene in 2021.

And now the British company is hoping to do it again for those on a budget with the new Nothing Phone 2a.

5

Nothing Phone 2a takes away some features to keep the price down
The striking lighting function at the back is back

5

The striking lighting function at the back is back

Starting at £319 this is a very attractive price tag in today’s mobile world, but does it add up to a good quality device worth considering?

Read on for our full review.

Nothing Phone 2a: Look and feel

Nothing Phones stand out for their quite unique design, led by the quirky Glyph lighting system on the back.

For those who don’t know, the Glyth light strips flash in a variety of ways of your choosing, such as for notifications, as a volume indicator, or as a timer – think of it as a mini dance floor in the palm of your hand.

The Glyth lighting thankfully survived on the 2a, but has been scaled back quite a bit compared to its bigger brother, the Nothing Phone 2.

There are now just three light strips, compared to the 11 on the Nothing Phone 2 – and they’re concentrated on the top third of the handset, rather than the entire surface.

It’s certainly a consideration for anyone tired of breaking the bank on a smartphone

As someone who really likes the Glyth feature, it’s sad to see it reduced, but I can understand why there needs to be some wiggle room to keep the overall cost down, which is why I’m glad it’s in some way another form remains.

An important point to note about the back is that it’s plastic and not glass like previous Nothing Phones – which is another way the company has seemingly cut corners to reduce overall costs.

Most read in Phones and gadgets

They don’t look all that different, but the plastic is more sensitive to fingerprints and will scratch more easily.

As for the display, it’s a 6.78-inch screen that delivers sharp, bright and colorful results.

Nothing Phone 2a: Performance

Nothing has swapped the chipsets that power the device and switched to MediaTek’s Dimensity 7200 Pro.

General apps ran quite quickly, although switching between apps wasn’t as smooth as I’d like.

Nothing Phone 2a – what you need to know

But games performed surprisingly smoothly considering the price.

The maximum amount of storage you can get is 256GB, which isn’t much if you like to take a lot of photos and videos – and there’s no microSD support either, leaving you reliant on the cloud or staying super tidy with what you keep on your handset.

In terms of functionality, there aren’t any AI tools making headlines like we’ve seen with other recent smartphone launches.

The Nothing Phone 2a runs Android 14 and Nothing has committed to three years of major Android updates and four years of security updates, which is less than most rivals.

Who has been offering free updates the longest?

The longer you receive updates, the longer you can continue to use your smartphone safely – and for free with the latest features.

Samsung
For the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung said it would offer at least seven generations of OS updates and seven years of security updates.

OnePlus
At the launch of the OnePlus 12, OnePlus committed to a minimum of four years of Android updates and five years of security updates.

Xiaomi
Xiaomi offers four years of discount on Android updates and five years of security updates.

Googling
For the Pixel 8, Google said devices would receive a minimum of seven years of support.

Nothing Phone 2a: Battery

The battery measures 5,000 mAh, which is the same size as the Galaxy S24 Ultra, but so are some mid-range devices.

Nothing claims that you can get up to two days of use and especially after a day of reasonable use (watching videos, surfing the internet and light gaming) my battery was about half empty.

The Nothing Phone 2a does not have a charging brick in the box, but it does have a USB-C cable.

Charging up to 45W is supported, meaning I can get a full charge from zero in about an hour.

One feature that has been removed is wireless charging.

Nothing Phone 2a: Camera

The Nothing Phone 2a has a dual 50-megapixel main camera and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera.

It took some pretty decent photos, although some parts lack sharp detail.

And since there’s only a 2x digital zoom, you don’t expect to get a great close-up photo of something that’s far away.

Taking photos in low light at night went well, although some elements felt too artificially brighter.

Nothing Phone 2a: Judgment

The Nothing Phone 2a makes some worthy sacrifices to keep the overall cost down.

However, the unique Glyph lighting lacks the wow factor as the number of strips has been reduced.

The shorter deployment of updates compared to rivals is disappointing.

Apart from that, there’s a lot to like.

Decent performance, a great battery and a truly unique design, all for a very reasonable starting price of £319.

It’s certainly a consideration for anyone tired of breaking the bank on a smartphone.

Here’s how to make sure your device goes the distance.

SCREEN SAVER: Dropping your phone is a common accident, so protect your screen with a protector.

This also helps prevent scratches, which can affect the value of the phone if you want to resell it.

Tempered glass screens tend to protect against most damage and are good value for money: buy a pack of four for an iPhone 15 for around £4 on Amazon.

CASE CLOSED: Phone cases are another way to protect your device from bumps.

It is worth investing in a device that can absorb the shock if your device falls.

Try the ESR case for around £13 from Amazon.

Apple recommends removing certain cases when charging devices.

This is because some can generate excess heat, which affects battery life.

If your phone gets warm while charging, remove it from the case.

iPhone tricks to extend battery life and save storage space, including the little-known ‘motion reduction’ hack

SUNSTROKE: Protect your phone from high temperatures if you want to keep it in good condition.

Heat higher than 35 degrees can permanently damage the battery capacity. If you are on vacation, make sure you place your handset in a cool place.

Apple warns that charging your phone in a very hot environment can weaken the gadget even further.

BATTERY POWER: Overcharging a device or leaving it completely discharged can negatively impact battery life.

Newer iPhones have optimized battery charging, which will stop charging at a certain point if you leave your handset plugged in overnight.

If your phone does not have this feature, try charging it at other times of the day. And try to keep the charge level above five percent.

Turn it on and off regularly to give your device the necessary reset to keep it running smoothly.

With everything a smartphone can do these days, it’s often easy to overlook one of the device’s most basic functions: voice calling. Communicating over the phone has become more complicated in a world of robocalls and automated voice trees, but your phone may already have the tools to make talking to people (or not) easier. Here are a few suggestions.

Do you want to call a company that is not in your contact list? Just search for the company online at Apple Sirithe Google Assistant (or it is new Twin helper) or Samsung’s Bixby. When you see the establishment in the search results, simply tap the phone icon or phone number to call – or instruct the virtual assistant to do so.

(If sharing information with your assistant or using artificial intelligence programs raises concerns, read the software’s privacy policy to see how the company uses your data.)

Don’t waste valuable time on calls you didn’t want to answer. On an iPhone, open the Settings app, select Phone and scroll down to enable the app Silence unknown callers function. Calls from numbers not in your contact list are now muted and sent straight to voicemail.

Apples Live voicemail The feature in iOS 17 offers real-time transcription of messages that are recorded – and you have the ability to connect with callers as they leave a message, just like it used to work with answering machines. You can also send an incoming call directly to Live Voicemail by tapping the voicemail icon on the calling screen. Live Voicemail can be enabled or disabled in the Phone app settings.

Android-based phones have their own call management tools, but these vary depending on the model and software version. To see what’s available to you, open the Phone app, tap the Menu icon (the three vertical dots) in the top right corner and select Settings.

Call screening features can be turned on and off, for example when you are expecting a call from someone who is not in your contact list. And at Google Contacts appyou can even route calls from selected numbers straight away to voicemail.

Apps and websites have taken over various customer service tasks, such as rebooking flights, but sometimes you need to talk to a human. Many companies now use an automated callback service so you don’t have to wait on hold, but in other cases you do. The Google Assistant may be able to wait on your behalf.

Hold on for mewhich became available on Google’s Pixel phones in 2020, is one method. You’ll first need to enable ‘Hold for me’ in the Google Phone app settings, but if you call later and are put on hold, tap the ‘Hold for me’ option on the screen from the phone. The Google Assistant waits and alerts you when an employee is on the line.

If you don’t have a Pixel phone, there’s Google’s similar “Talk to a Live Representative” experiment Search Labs. It is available in the Google app for iOS And Android; tap the lab bottle icon in the top left corner to go to Search Labs. “Talk to a Live Representative” – which will be live until the end of 2024 – lists the 1-800 numbers for various airlines and other companies, and gives you the option to receive a call and call you back when the representative is there. However, it is still experimental and may not work consistently.

If you want to turn off your ringer but don’t want to miss an important call, you can use a visual or vibration notification to alert you.

In iOS 17, in the main Settings app, go to Accessibility, then Audio & Visual LED flash for warnings. In Android 14, tap Settings, go to Notifications and select Flash notifications to access the camera and screen flash alert options. You will see a hint of light or color when you receive a call.

Both Apple’s iOS software, left, and Google’s Android 14 system can visually alert you when a call comes in, although those sensitive to flashing lights will have to stick to vibration to silently announce incoming calls.Credit…Apple; Googling

Flash-sensitive people should use the vibration alternative instead. In the Sound and haptics settings on an iPhone, you can assign custom vibrations to callers. Android phones, including the Pixel And universe models, have their own adjustable vibration options.

Once you start poking around, you’ll likely find even more useful tools in your phone’s settings. And you can enjoy the irony of using 21st century software to help with a communication method that has been around for a long time 148 years as of this month.

These are in addition to increases to 17.3 percent last year.

Someone on a standard two-year contract paying £20 per month in early 2023 could soon be paying more than £25 per month.

The Money Saving Expert previously called for mid-contract increases above inflation to be banned.

Speaking on Martin Lewis Money Show Live, he said: “What’s strange here is that while the price you pay if you hold goes up, if you switch to a SIM only deal, prices plummet.

“Step 1 is to text INFO for free to 85075 to check if you are free to leave.

“Step 2 is to use a cheap SIM match and step 3, to keep your number, is text PAC to 65075 and give the code to your new company.”

It comes after Which? warned that broadband customers could pay £150 more than expected due to “unpredictable” mid-contract price increases in 2024.

The consumer group analyzed increases from top providers on their 18- and 24-month deals.

BT and EE customers who signed a contract in January 2023 could see some of the highest average price increases of £147.43 and £147.31.

Vodafone and Plusnet customers could see an increase of £122.38 and £117.87 respectively.

TalkTalk customers could see a smaller increase of £76.09 on average over the course of shorter 18-month contracts.

Virgin Media did not use inflation-related price increases in 2023, but some customers’ prices did rise by an average of 13.8 percent due to ad hoc price increases, according to Which?.

Which? argues that it is unfair for consumers to sign up for deals that give them no certainty about how much they can expect to pay over the course of their contract, and then have to pay exit fees if they want to leave early.

How can I reduce my mobile bill?

If you think your bills are too high and want to reduce them, the first thing you need to do is find out what the cheapest deal on the market is.

You can use this rate as a negotiating tool to get a better offer from your provider or as inspiration to switch providers.

Sites like MoneySuperMarket and Uswitch all help you customize your search based on price, speed and provider.

Make a cheaper deal

If you have found a cheaper rate with another provider, contact your provider to see if they can match the price.

If negotiation fails, you can threaten to leave.

Your provider may then be more inclined to keep you by offering you a better deal.

Trying to negotiate always makes it easier to decide whether to renew your contract or move to another provider.

Switch providers

If you’re unhappy with the new costs and every attempt at negotiation hasn’t gone your way, switching to another provider could be the best way to save money on your telecom bills.

But if you want to switch, make sure you know whether your contract is still running or not.

If you are halfway through your contract and want to leave, please note that you may be charged an exit fee. So contact your provider for any costs.

Mobile phone users are stuck between “exorbitant” mid-contract price increases or high exit fees, according to Which?.

It showed that an EE customer would have to pay an exit fee of £424.67 if they left a year early, and that Three’s customer would have to pay £379.46 to end their contract.

Furthermore, using the example of an EE customer who signed a 36-month contract for an iPhone Pro Max with unlimited data: Which one? estimates that the customer would pay an extra £105 for the handset over the next year due to the price increases.

Three customers will face the lowest sign-up fee of £169.59 if they end their contract a year early.

It’s always worth asking your provider if they can offer you something cheaper, so feel free to call them even if you have a contract.

If not, make a note of the date your contract ends and note other deals you can switch to.

Check whether you can get a social rate

If your household has a low income, it is also worth investigating social rates.

These broadband packages and discounts have been created for people who receive certain benefits.

They are often available to people on income support, Universal Credit or disability benefits.

About 4.2 million households qualify for these cheaper rates, but only 55,000 take advantage of them.

Voxi and SMARTY both offer these cheaper mobile phone contracts and prices start at £10 per month.

BARGAIN hunters have spotted a smartphone deal for under £100 on Amazon, which includes a bigger battery than the iPhone.

The Android device is from a classic brand that some may have completely forgotten: Motorola.

Moto G13 now costs just £93Credit: Amazon

Motorola has been making a steady stream of wallet-friendly smartphones in recent years.

And one of the latest models, the Moto G13, is currently available for just £93 on Amazon.

Despite being on the cheaper side, one of the biggest advantages of the smartphone is its battery life.

The capacity is 5000 mAh, which at 4441 mAh is larger than the highest iPhone’s.

It’s one of the top selling points mentioned by customers in the Amazon reviews, with a rating of 4.3 out of five.

“For the price, this is a very impressive phone!” wrote one.

“With great battery life, almost stock Android and good storage, this phone is really good value for money.”

Most read in Phones and gadgets

Another said: “This phone has all the boxes thick.

“Good features, very good, long battery life, camera is as good as other phones promise and more… in short, good value for money.”

A third added: “The battery life is very good and the fingerprint sensor and facial recognition work well.”

‘Criminals can eavesdrop on you’, say experts who warn all iPhone and Android users not to log in with ‘text codes’ anymore

Other notable specs include a 50-megapixel Quad Pixel camera for photos.

It also supports dual SIM so you can have more than one plan on the phone.

Most places sell the Moto G13 for £99, but the Matte Charcoal model is available through a third-party Amazon seller for £93.

All prices in this article were correct at the time of writing, but may have changed since then.

Always do your own research before making a purchase.
