A disabled pedestrian jailed for causing the death of a cyclist in the street has been released on unconditional bail after winning the right to challenge her manslaughter conviction.

Auriol Gray is ‘excited’ to be back home and was welcomed with ‘big hugs’ from supportive neighbors and after doing a supermarket shop.

She was jailed for three years in March last year for aggressively waving at a retired midwife who then fell into the path of an oncoming car, killing her.

Polite and well-spoken, Gray confirmed to MailOnline today that she was now back home, but refused to say how she was feeling or answer questions, simply saying: ‘No comment.’

Her good friend Roman Ramsay, who bailed her out, said: “We are so happy that Auriol is back home and it is really nice to see her again. She should never have been in jail in the first place.”

He added: “She is happy to get bail.”

Another friend and neighbor Robert Reed told our website: ‘She was granted bail and left jail last night.

‘I welcomed her home and we had a quick cuddle before she went to the Aldi store to buy some stuff.

“One of our friends got her out of jail and we’re all so happy she’s back. She is in good spirits and happy to be home.”

She had spent a year behind bars at HMP Peterborough.

Gray returned to her adapted flat in a gated complex in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, owned and maintained by the Papworth Trust, which had been ‘sparklingly cleaned’ by her neighbours.

Mr Ramsey said Gray, now 50, was also “pleased and relieved” at the prospect of her name being cleared if her appeal was successful, and had told friends: “I’m not a murderer!”

After three judges at the Court of Appeal this week allowed her to challenge her conviction, he said: ‘Auriol was very angry about being in prison in the first place.’

The retired stonemason, 78, who regularly visited her in prison and last saw her inside on Saturday, said: ‘Her friends, family and neighbors all thought it was completely ridiculous that she had been convicted of manslaughter and given a custodial sentence.

“So did she, and she has always maintained that she is not a murderer.”

A spokesperson for the Criminal Appeal Office told MaiOnline: ‘Auriol Gray has been granted unconditional bail pending her appeal against the conviction.

‘She has been released. It is expected that the appeal will be heard in May 2024.”

Gray, who suffers from cerebral palsy and partial blindness, denied manslaughter but was found guilty after a retrial.

She lost her appeal against her sentence in May last year, but has since hired new lawyers who took her case to the Court of Appeal in London.

Mr Ramsey said: ‘She feared she would lose her flat after receiving a three-year prison sentence, but fortunately she was not deprived of that sentence.

“She has been looking forward to the thought of coming home.

‘We prepared it for her with great anticipation, it has been cleaned and it shines!

“She has many friends and neighbors here who care about her and will care for her, and we will all give her a warm welcome.

“She also has caregivers who help.”

He added: ‘She is pleased with the appeal hearing and the fact that her conviction could be overturned.

‘She just wants to get on with her life.

‘She was not present at the hearing but was allowed to watch the proceedings via video link from the Governor’s office at HMP Peterborough.’

Gray has few surviving relatives – her mother Verna Gray, 87, from Sudbury, Suffolk, is not in the ‘best of health’ and has rarely been able to visit her in prison.

She has a businessman brother-in-law who lives in Chiswick, West London.

Her father and sister are both deceased.

Gray was caught on CCTV gesturing to grandmother Celia Ward, 77, while shouting at her to ‘get off the sidewalk’ in Huntingdon in October 2020.

A spokesman for the Criminal Appeal Office said: ‘This case was heard on Tuesday and the application for leave to appeal against a conviction was granted.

“A new hearing date will be set in due course for the final outcome of the appeal.

“The court has granted the lawyer the liberty to file a bail application.”

Ben Rose, of lawyers at Hickman & Rose, who are representing Gray, said: ‘Auriol Gray is an autistic, disabled person with reduced vision.

“In a case like this, the prosecutor must prove to the jury that she intended to harm, or feared harm, to Ms. Ward.

‘We say this did not happen and will therefore ask the Court of Appeal to quash Ms Grey’s conviction when the case is heard in May.’

Mr Ramsey told how Gray had appeared ‘in good spirits’ whenever he visited her – and before he was released yesterday.

He said: ‘She has been inside for a year and is doing well considering the circumstances. She is well cared for in a special wing because of her needs, keeps her head down and does not cause any problems.

“She is a smart and very literate lady and instead of going crazy inside, she has put her mind to good use.

“She is always reading and taking quizzes, and even learning advanced math from another inmate.

‘She has a lot of knowledge and the people there are amazed at what she knows.

‘But she can’t wait to get out of prison and get on with her life.

“She feels like she has been wronged.”

The Manhattan district attorney’s office said in court filings Thursday that a large cache of newly released documents contained little that could affect or delay the criminal trial of Donald J. Trump, which was set to begin in mid-April.

In a surprising move, the district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, agreed last week to grant a brief delay in the trial, which was set to begin March 25, to give Trump’s lawyers time to view the files. The documents had been turned over by federal prosecutors investigating Michael Cohen, the former president’s longtime fixer.

In Thursday’s filing, Mr. Bragg’s office downplayed the scope of the documents, though it said its review was continuing.

“The public now has good reason to believe that this production contains only limited materials relevant to the subject matter of this case that have not previously been disclosed to the suspect,” the filing said. “The vast majority of production is completely intangible, duplicating or substantially duplicating previously disclosed materials.”

It added that the current delay – until April 15 – “provides a more than reasonable amount of time for the suspect to review the information provided.”

Mr. Trump’s legal team has asked the judge in the case, Juan M. Merchan, to dismiss the charges entirely or delay the trial until the summer, blaming Mr. Bragg’s prosecutors for the late disclosure of the documents.

The documents in question came from the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York successfully prosecuted Mr. Cohen in 2018. Mr. Bragg’s prosecutors have denied responsibility for the delay, noting that it was Mr. Trump’s lawyers who waited until early this year to subpoena the documents from the Southern District.

Trump is about to become the first former US president to face criminal trial. The prosecutors’ case, filed almost exactly a year ago, centers on a hush money payment Mr. Cohen made to a porn star in the days leading up to the 2016 presidential election, who said she had had an affair with Mr. Trump. Prosecutors have argued that the cover-up deprived voters of the opportunity to fully assess Trump’s candidacy.

Mr. Trump, who is again the presumptive Republican nominee for president, has denied the allegations and portrayed the case as a politically motivated punch by Mr. Bragg, a Democrat.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

‘Main Modi Ka Parivar Hoon’ song The new slogan is reminiscent of the ‘Main bhi Chowkidar Hoon’ campaign of 2019, which was prompted by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remark ‘Chowkidar chor hai’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday released a campaign song titled ‘Main Modi ka parivar hoon’, showing his commitment to all. The Prime Minister’s initiative aims to show that every Indian is part of his family. The move comes in response to comments made by RJD president Lalu Prasad Yadav, who claimed that Prime Minister Modi “doesn’t have a family of his own”. . The RJD is part of the INDIA bloc which consists of opposition parties led by Congress. In a show of “solidarity” with the Prime Minister, Home Minister Amit Shah, other BJP leaders such as Anurag Thakur, Rajnath Singh and BJP President JP Nadda added the suffix ‘Modi Ka Parivar’ to their names on the handles.

The new slogan is reminiscent of the 2019 “Main bhi Chowkidar Hoon” campaign, which was prompted by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s comment “Chowkidar chor hai”.

Agreements

The BJP’s recent slogan bears a striking similarity to the ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar Hoon’ campaign that took place in 2019. This campaign was a response to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s accusation that ‘Chowkidar chor hai’ (the watchman is a thief). The genesis of this slogan can be traced back to a meeting in Karnataka before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, where Gandhi claimed that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government had favored an Anil Ambani company in a deal . Gandhi cleverly labeled Prime Minister Modi as ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ (the watchman is a thief), implying corruption. In response, Prime Minister Modi positioned himself as a vigilant ‘chowkidar’ who stood against corruption. This led to a wave where the Prime Minister and other BJP leaders added ‘chowkidar’ as a prefix to their names on Twitter. Prime Minister Modi’s Twitter handle changed to ‘Chowkidar Narendra Modi’, setting a trend for other BJP leaders to follow suit.

The power of slogans: a political instrument

Slogans have always been a powerful tool in the political arena. They summarize a party’s ideology, message and vision in a concise but impactful way. The ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar Hoon’ campaign was not just a response to an accusation, but a strategic move to reframe the narrative in favor of the ruling party. By embracing the ‘chowkidar’ identity, Prime Minister Modi and his party members projected themselves as guardians of the country’s interests, deflecting charges of corruption and inefficiency. This shift in narrative resonated with the masses and created a sense of unity and purpose among supporters.

Twitter as a battlefield

Twitter played a crucial role in amplifying the slogan ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar Hoon’. By adding ‘chowkidar’ to their Twitter handles, BJP leaders not only unified their online presence but also engaged with their supporters on a personal level.

Two opposition party politicians were released from prison in Senegal on Thursday evening, just ten days before national elections in which one of them will run for president.

Hundreds of supporters celebrated in the streets of Dakar after Ousmane Sonko, Senegal’s main opposition leader, was released along with Bassirou Diomaye Faye, his party’s candidate in the March 24 elections.

“You never gave up, even when we were away. You kept fighting.” Mr Faye told this to supporters in Dakar on Thursday evening. “Today we are ready to fight the same battle with you.”

The release is the latest in a series of unexpected moves by the incumbent president, Macky Sall, who cited corruption allegations when he announced last month that he was canceling the election. Facing a backlash, he reversed course and set the election for Sunday, March 24 – just nine days before his term ends.

After hinting for years that he might run again, Mr. Sall finally confirmed last July that he would step down after his two terms expired.

Senegal, a coastal West African state of 17 million people, is seen as a bastion of democracy compared to some of its West African neighbors, which are ruled by military juntas after a wave of coups in recent years.

Mr. Sonko was ineligible to contest the upcoming elections because he was convicted of corrupting a minor last June and sentenced to two years in prison. Mr Faye was on the run from prison, where he was awaiting trial for defamation and contempt of court, after accusing magistrates in a social media post last year of prosecuting Mr Sonko to protect the interests of Mr Sall to serve.

Campaigns have been started prior to the elections. Mr Sall’s chosen successor, former Prime Minister Amadou Ba, has held meetings that were poorly attended and received little attention.

Alioune Tine, an expert on human rights in West Africa, said the capture of Mr Sonko and Mr Faye had increased their cachet, especially for Mr Faye, who was a little-known figure before being named as Mr Sonko’s replacement. the election.

“If you throw leaders in jail, you turn them into heroes,” said Mr. Tine, the founder of the AfrikaJom Center, a Dakar-based research organization.

As Mr Sonko and Mr Faye paraded through central Dakar on Thursday evening, it was Mr Sonko’s name that supporters chanted. But Mr. Sonko kept a low profile as Mr. Faye addressed the crowd through a microphone, standing in a car, a scarf in the colors of the Senegalese flag around his neck.

“Sonko will play a central role in the campaign, but the main challenge for him will be not to overshadow Faye too much so that Faye can win,” Mr Tine added.

A total of nineteen candidates are on the ballot for the elections in Senegal, one of the few countries in the region that has never undergone military rule. In recent years, however, Mr. Sall’s government had repeatedly cut off access to the Internet and banned demonstrations as Mr. Sonko rose to fame.

There have been dozens of demonstrators killed during anti-government riotsmany with live ammunition human rights groups said was dismissed by the country’s security forces.

Mr. Sonko is a charismatic but divisive figure who was tried on charges of raping a massage parlor employee. He was acquitted of rape, but sentenced last year to two years in prison for “corruption of the youth” because the employee was under 21 years old.

Mr. Sall signed an amnesty bill earlier this month, which ultimately led to the release of Mr. Faye and Mr. Sonko. But Mr Sonko’s role in both the upcoming elections and the country’s political future remains unclear.

Mr Sonko, a former tax inspector and currently mayor of the southern city of Ziguinchor, has vowed to rid Senegal of corruption, appealing to young Senegalese voters – although he has not made clear how he plans to deliver on his promises of sweeping change to be carried out.

“Sonko is the person Senegal needs,” said Serge Goudiaby Atepa, a well-known Senegalese architect and head of the main lobby of business leaders in Senegal.

Mr Atepa also praised Mr Sall for releasing Mr Sonko, who was his main political enemy for years. “The crowds we saw on the streets last night prove that this was the right thing to do.”

Mady Camara contributed reporting from Dakar.

EA surprised Steam players by removing 18 games from its library on Steam in one day.

While many players were happy to see EA’s older games on another platform, it had a negative effect for some.

1

The Command & Conquer Ultimate collection contains no fewer than 18 gamesCredit: EA

The games that EA released immediately shot up the Steam charts and reached near the top.

This was helped by the 60% discount on all titles, a deal that is expiring Thursday March 21, 2024.

However, this means that smaller games that did well on Steam were immediately pushed further down the list.

This means they received fewer sales and were unaware of what EA was planning before the games came out.

If you’re interested in the latest indie games, keep in mind that you may have to scroll a little further down the popular list to find new games.

If you’re interested in any of the games from EA’s older library, here are the games currently available on Steam.

  • Command & Conquer – The Ultimate Collection
    • Command and rule
    • Command & Conquer: the covert operations

Israeli protesters are blocking trucks with humanitarian aid from reaching civilians in Gaza, even as children starve to death.

Breaking through police lines, they have been seen running in front of food convoys, sitting at border gates singing Jewish songs, with some holding rowdy techno dance parties.

At night they camp in tents nearby, or catch shuttle buses back to town, while some set up cotton candy machines for the many children brought to the border.

Israeli protesters, some the relatives of the 134 hostages still held by Hamas, are threatening to withhold aid until they are free and want to starve out Hamas fighters.

Some claim aid trucks are full of weapons, not food, and will be taken by terrorists anyway.

Gaza is so wrecked by five months of Israeli bombing and ground assaults that those not among the 30,000 killed are starving to death.

President Joe Biden authorized air drops of supplies, but as they barely make a dent he pledged in the State of the Union to build a temporary port to bring aid in.

A survey by the Viterbi Family Center for Public Opinion and Policy Research at the Israel Democracy Institute found 68 per cent of Jewish Israelis opposed sending aid the Gaza under any circumstances.

Even 39 per cent of left-wing Jews were against sending supplies, along with 80 per cent of right-wing Jews.

Video from social media and international news crews show how Israelis, from teenagers to grandmothers with small children, have formed well-organized groups intent on blockading the region.

Waving Israeli flags and holding placards, they hike through bushes around police checkpoints and either sit on the road or stand in circles.

A few even climb on to the front of trucks as they approach, forcing them to brake suddenly, and refuse to move despite demands from police.

The dance parties included protesters with purple flags with ‘Nova’ written on them in reference to the music festival where Hamas killed dozens and took hostages.

Some footage shows police and border guards tackling them and dragging them out of the way, but in other cases they stand idly by as trucks queue for miles.

‘You’re confused, go deal with the war, we came to help you,’ one woman yells in Hebrew as police and soldiers try to clear the road.

One protester told CNN they would keep up the blockade until Hamas released the hostages, and was happy to use starving civilians as bargaining chips.

‘You know what? If they are starving to death, give us back, give our hostages back. Not a single loaf of bread should go there ’til our hostages are coming back,’ she said.

‘You know, even if there is a humanitarian crisis — and there’s not — even if there is, it’s my right and duty to prioritize [Israelis] over any Gazan babies.’

Fellow protester Debbie Sharon said she didn’t believe civilians would even get the food and supplies inside the trucks as Hamas would take it all.

‘I’m telling you here and now, if we knew it’s getting to the children of Gaza, we will do it. This does not arrive at their doorstep,’ she said.

‘This arrives into the tunnels of Hamas that are fighting us and holding our hostages.’

A third protester claimed the trucks could have weapons smuggled inside as there was no way to check them.

‘Bags of rice that are meant to go to their children are filled with bullets,’ she said, as she crossed through a field to reach the border gates.

There is no evidence of military supplies being smuggled in aid trucks, or that food is taken by Hamas for its terrorists before it reaches civilians.

At the gates, a woman whose sick uncle Lior Rudaeff is one of the hostages, refuses to move from where she is sitting on the road.

‘He’s got a heart condition, he hasn’t had any medication. Why aren’t the hostages getting humanitarian aid?’ she told NPR.

Another woman, who blacked the gates while holding her newborn baby, had a similar message.

‘Release the hostages and they will get all the aid, everything, on the condition that the hostages will be released,’ she said.

‘I have real sympathy for the civilians in Gaza, but the ones who are hurting them are Hamas. Any truck that goes by will not reach civilians.’

At the Kerem Shalom border crossing, teenagers as young as 17 are among the leaders of a well-organized effort including shuttle buses and tent cities.

‘We sleep tonight in Kerem Shalom and block aid and fuel to Hamas! Do you want to sleep here with us? Shuttles are running throughout the night and day,’ Yosef de Bresser, 22, wrote on a WhatsApp group.

‘War is war,’ he told the Washington Post with a shrug, noting that the US killed thousands of civilians bombing Japan in World War II.

‘Who gives his enemy aid?’

Another young man, Ben Shabat, claimed – without evidence – that Gazans could use food supplies to make weapons.

‘When you mix flour with potassium nitrate you get an explosive for a warhead. Every pound of sugar and flour that goes into Gaza from Israel, we will get it back by the way of a rocket that will kill our children,’ he said.

He was also motivated by helping the IDF starve out Hamas: ‘When a soldier is hungry, he’s not fighting so well.’

Tahel Attar, 17, said civilians should only get the bare necessities, if anything at all, and luxury foods were among the supplies.

‘We heard they are giving them stuff that they don’t really, really need. Like strawberries. I don’t think people there are crying for strawberries,’ she said.

Tahel said even though authorities sometimes took protesters away to let trucks in, they only did it because they were ordered to.

‘The army is with us, the police is with us. They don’t want us to be here, but they get it. They let us. We are talking with them, we are having fun with them, we are offering them everything they need,’ she said.

Some of the protesters even took photos with smiling soldiers and border guards.

The World Food Program warned last month that Gaza could be plunged into famine as early as May.

The UN food agency defines a famine as when 30 per cent of children are malnourished, one-fifth of households face acute food shortages and two of every 10,000 people are dying from hunger or malnutrition.

But a report by Refugees International on Thursday warned Gazan civilians were already starving in ‘apocalyptic’ conditions akin to a serious famine.

‘Our research makes clear that conditions inside of Gaza are apocalyptic,’ said the report read.

‘After five months of war, Palestinians are struggling to find adequate food, water, shelter, and basic medicine. Famine-level hunger is already widespread and worsening.’

The report claimed Israel ‘consistently and groundlessly impeded aid operations within Gaza, blocked legitimate relief operations and resisted implementing measures that would genuinely enhance the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza’.

‘[Israel has] erected unnecessary hurdles, complicated logistical processes, and an unpredictable vetting system, rendering the inspection regime overwhelmingly burdensome with layers of bureaucracy and inspection and limited working hours.’

Hunger is most acute in northern Gaza, which has been isolated by Israeli forces and has suffered long cutoffs of food supplies.

At least 20 people have died from malnutrition and dehydration at the north’s Kamal Adwan and Shifa hospitals, according to the Health Ministry.

Most of the dead are children — including ones as old as 15 — as well as a 72-year-old man.

Particularly vulnerable children are also beginning to succumb in the south, where access to aid is more regular.

At the Emirati Hospital in Rafah, 16 premature babies have died of malnutrition-related causes over the past five weeks, one of the senior doctors said.

Malnutrition is generally slow to bring death, striking children and the elderly first. Other factors can play a role.

Underfed mothers have difficulty breastfeeding children. Diarrheal diseases, rampant in Gaza due to lack of clean water and sanitation, leave many unable to retain any of the calories they ingest, said Anuradha Narayan, a UNICEF child nutrition expert.

Malnutrition weakens immune systems, sometimes leading to death from other diseases.

Israel largely shut off entry of food, water, medicine and other supplies after launching its assault on Gaza following Hamas’ October 7 attack on southern Israel, in which militants killed some 1,200 people and took around 250 hostage.

It has allowed only a trickle of aid trucks through two crossings in the south.

Meat, milk, vegetables and fruit are nearly impossible to find, according to several residents.

The few items in shops are random and sold at hugely inflated prices — mainly nuts, snacks and spices. People have taken barrels of chocolate from bakeries and are selling tiny smears of it.

Most people eat a weed that crops up in empty lots, known as ‘khubaiza.’ Fatima Shaheen, a 70-year-old who lives with her two sons and their children in northern Gaza, said boiled khubaiza is her main meal, and her family has also ground up food meant for rabbits to use as flour.

‘We are dying for a piece of bread,’ Shaheen said.

Qamar Ahmed said his 18-month-old daughter, Mira, eats mostly boiled weeds. ‘There is no food that suits her age,’ said Ahmed, a researcher with Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor and an economic journalist.

His 70-year-old father gives his own food to Ahmed’s young son, Oleyan. ‘We try to make him eat and he refuses,’ Ahmed said of his father.

Recent airdrops of aid by the US and other countries provide far lower amounts of aid than truck deliveries, which have become rare and sometimes dangerous.

UNRWA says Israeli authorities haven’t allowed it to deliver supplies to the north since January 23.

The World Food Organization, which had paused deliveries because of safety concerns, said the military forced its first convoy to the north in two weeks to turn back Tuesday.

Yazan al-Kafarna, 10, died Monday after almost a week of unsuccessful treatment in Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah.

Photos of the boy showed him extremely emaciated, with twig-like limbs and deep-sunk eyes in a face shriveled to his skull.

Al-Kafarna was born with cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that affects motor skills and can make swallowing and eating difficult.

His parents said they struggled to find food he could eat, including soft fruits and eggs, since fleeing their home in the north.

He died due to extreme muscle wastage caused primarily by lack of food, according to Dr. Jabr al-Shair, head of the children’s emergency department at Abu Youssef Najjar Hospital.

On a recent day, around 80 malnourished children crowded the hospital’s wards. Aya al-Fayoume, a 19-year-old mother displaced to Rafah, had brought her 3-month-old daughter, Nisreen, who has lost vast amounts of weight over the winter months, sick with persistent diarrhea and vomiting.

On her diet of mainly canned goods, al-Fayoume said she doesn’t produce enough breast milk for Nisreen.

‘Everything I need is expensive or unavailable,’ she said.

A UN expert said on Thursday that Israel was destroying Gaza’s food system as part of a broader ‘starvation campaign’ in its war against Hamas militants and berated a UN human rights body for not doing more.

‘The images of starvation in Gaza are unbearable and you are doing nothing,’ Michael Fakhri, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, said in a speech to the UN Human Rights Council.

Fakhri told the council that Israel was “destroying the food system in Gaza”.

“Israel has mounted a starvation campaign against the Palestinian people in Gaza,” he added, saying that included targeting small-scale fishermen.

Yeela Cytrin, a legal adviser at the Israeli mission to the U.N., called the allegations against it a “blatant lie”.

“Israel utterly rejects allegations that it is using starvation as a tool of war,” she told the council and then walked out in protest.

Israel denies restricting relief into Gaza and has started working with private contractors to deliver aid.

President Biden at the State of the Union announced he was directing the military to build a port on the Gaza coast to bring relief to the population there.

The United States is a leading international efforts to get more humanitarian assistance to Gaza,’ he said.

That does not mean US military personnel will be on the ground in the war torn region.

White House officials offered no time line for when the pier will be built or where exactly it will be located but said its construction will allow more shipments of food, medicine and other essential items to be delivered to the 2.2 million Palestinians.

They said the White House would coordinate with the Israelis regarding security on the ground and with the UN and humanitarian groups on getting aid delivered.

The temporary pier will allow for hundreds of additional truckloads of assistance each day, the officials said. It will be an additional route for humanitarian aid, which is currently limited to two land crossings into the southern part of Gaza.

Other countries will be involved in its construction but it’s unclear if Israel will be.

The project could take more than 30 to 60 days to construct and would involve hundreds or thousands of US troops on ships just off shore. It will also require armed escorts and other protective measures.

The US port system being envisioned for Gaza involves two separate components, the first being construction of a floating, offshore barge that would be able to accept aid deliveries.

The US military would then move aid from there to a floating, 1,800 foot-long (550 meter) causeway anchored to the shore.

Once operational, the port system would allow delivery about 2 million meals to Gazans daily.

By comparison, the US military has delivered a total of about 124,000 meals during four airdrops in the past week. The latest airdrop on Friday delivered about 11,500 meals, the US military said.

Ronald Johnson, who spent more than 30 years behind bars, was released Monday after a Philadelphia judge vacated his sentence and overturned his conviction, officials said.

Judge Scott DiClaudio thus granted Mr. Johnson’s request for post-conviction relief. Prosecutors informed the court that they would not pursue a new trial and sought to dismiss all charges, which the judge allowed.

That meant Mr. Johnson was a free man, according to his lawyer, Jennifer Merrigan.

“There is no way they can retry him because there is absolutely no evidence against him,” Ms. Merrigan said in an interview on Tuesday.

Mr. Johnson, 61, had served 34 years after being convicted of the 1990 murder of Joseph Goldsby. The conviction was “based solely on the false testimony of two witnesses,” the nonprofit law firm Phillips Black, which counsels incarcerated individuals : said in a statement.

Police had hidden evidence showing Mr Johnson had not taken part in the crime, Ms Merrigan said. She pointed to two witnesses who gave statements to police after being interviewed multiple times, saying Mr. Johnson was not present and “actually identifying another person.”

“The police then hid that evidence, and when he went to trial, the jury heard from two witnesses who said he was there. But he and his lawyers were unaware that these witnesses had made many more statements,” she said.

Ms. Merrigan said that “this kind of police misconduct has happened a lot in Philadelphia, and a lot across the country.”

“It’s really unfair to the people who are convicted and lose many years of their lives, but also to the victims, who don’t know what really happened to their loved one,” she said.

Mr Johnson, who had maintained his innocence during years behind bars, said he spent the first 24 hours of his newfound freedom taking a bath, buying clothes and getting a driver’s license. He enjoyed an extensive meal with his family, including rib-eye steak, shrimp and steak fries.

“I am starting a new chapter, and I am not rushing,” Mr. Johnson said in an interview on Tuesday, noting that “these long years have been tough.”

“Maybe you just cry at night,” he said, but “the next day you have to pick yourself up.”

Mr. Johnson, who turns 62 this summer, said he thinks he “will have two birthdays now.”

“The day I got out, and my usual birthday,” he said. “I think I’m going to celebrate them for two days for the rest of my life.”

The ex-husband of Kathleen Folbigg, the woman who was recently pardoned after being wrongfully imprisoned for murdering the couple’s four children, has died of a heart attack.

Craig Folbigg, who was also suffering from cancer, is understood to have been taken to Maitland Hospital in the NSW Hunter Valley on Saturday and died on Monday.

Mrs Folbigg was convicted of three murders and one manslaughter in 2003 after her babies Patrick, Sarah, Laura and Caleb died between 1989 and 1999.

After 20 years behind bars, she was released from prison in June last year due to ‘reasonable doubt’ about the cause of the children’s deaths.

The ex-husband of Kathleen Folbigg, the woman wrongfully imprisoned for killing the couple’s four children, has died of a heart attack. Craig and Kathleen Folbigg are pictured

Folbigg was “frustrated and disappointed” by the decision to pardon the previously accused child murderer, his lawyer said.

He had “not changed his mind” about the causes of the babies’ deaths, despite a new investigation finding there was reasonable doubt about his ex-wife’s convictions.

In December, the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal quashed Ms Folbigg’s convictions.

Mr Folbigg gave evidence against his ex-wife at her trial and handed over some of her diaries to police, saying it was those documents that led him to suspect she had murdered their children.

He refused to provide a DNA sample to scientists investigating genetic sequencing, and did not attend any further hearings or participate in the final investigation into his ex-wife’s convictions.

Mr Folbigg’s lawyer, Danny Eid, described how his client felt after his ex-wife was pardoned and released last June.

“He is the victim of this case,” Eid said.

“He is frustrated and disappointed that he has to endure another chapter.

“This is a man who people say will heal with time. But all the while his wounds continue to bleed.’

Mr Eid said that after losing four children aged from 19 days to 18 months in such tragic circumstances, closure was important to Mr Folbigg and his family.

However, he said that after 20 years of watching multiple attempts to overturn Ms Folbigg’s conviction and several painful investigations, ‘the wound can never heal’.

Mr Folbigg remarried in 2004 and had a son with his second wife Helen in 2005.

In recent years he led a quiet life in Branxton in the Hunter Valley and ran a lawn mower maintenance business in nearby Kurri Kurri, refusing to comment on his ex-wife or the fate of their children.

Lawyer Rhanee Rego made a statement on behalf of Ms Folbigg to News Corp publications on Tuesday afternoon.

“There are only two people on this earth who knew what it felt like to lose Caleb, Patrick, Sarah and Laura,” Ms. Rego said. “My condolences go out to the loved ones Craig leaves behind.”

Mr Folbigg's lawyer, Danny Eid, said in June last year:

Ms Folbigg was released after Tom Bathurst QC conducted an investigation which found there was reasonable doubt about her conviction.

Mr Bathurst’s report said he was ‘firmly convinced that there was reasonable doubt as to Ms Folbigg’s guilt for each of the offenses for which she was originally tried’.

According to the report, scientific progress has shown that there is a “reasonable possibility that three of the children died of natural causes.”

Mr Bathurst ‘could not accept the proposition that Mrs Folbigg was anything but a caring mother to her children’.

“In the case of Sarah and Laura Folbigg, there is a reasonable possibility that a genetic mutation known as CALM2-G114R caused their deaths,” the findings said.

Kathleen Folbigg arrives at the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal in December, where her convictions were quashed

In relation to the death of the fourth child, Mr Bathurst found ‘the coincidence and tendency at the heart of…’ [original 2003] Croncase falls away’.

Mr Bathurst, a former NSW chief justice, also addressed what Ms Folbigg had written in her diary which had previously been used against her.

“There is evidence that they were the writings of a grieving and possibly depressed mother, who blamed herself for the death of each child, contrary to admissions that she had killed or otherwise harmed them,” he found.

The inquiry in February last year heard evidence from experts about scientific developments that could potentially prove some of her babies died from natural causes linked to a genetic mutation.

Just five days after Election Day in 2020, a conservative attorney named Kenneth Chesebro emailed a former judge who worked for the Trump campaign in Wisconsin, James R. Troupis, with an idea on how to overturn the results.

Through lawsuits, Mr. Chesebro said, the Trump campaign could allege “several systemic abuses” and, with ongoing legal proceedings underway, encourage the Legislature to appoint “alternative” pro-Trump electors who can be certified in place of the Biden electors chosen by voters.

“With such a cloud of confusion, at the very least, no votes from WI (and perhaps MI and PA) should be counted, perhaps enough to throw the election to the House of Representatives,” Mr Chesebro wrote to Mr Troupis, referring to the swing states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Mr. Troupis quickly added Mr. Chesebro to Trump’s legal team, tasking him with laying out the plans in a series of memos that are now at the center of the indictment against Mr. Trump and a month later — with the help by Reince Priebus, the former White Chief of Staff of the House of Representatives – arranged a meeting with Mr Trump at the White House.

The email is the earliest known evidence of Mr. Chesebro’s involvement in what would become known as the bogus electoral plot. It was released Monday, along with a trove of more than 1,400 pages of text messages and emails belonging to Mr. Troupis and Mr. Chesebro when they settled a lawsuit filed against them in Wisconsin.

Taken together, the documents show in new detail how the Trump campaign’s litigation strategy was not designed to win in court so much as to provide cover for their political efforts. And they underline the central role that Mr Troupis – previously a little-known figure in the effort to overturn the election – played in advancing the plans.

The messages also describe how Mr. Chesebro worked to get the fake election documents into the hands of members of Congress, and how Mr. Chesebro — who has since pleaded guilty in Georgia to a conspiracy charge in connection with the scheme — led the mob fourth. who gathered in Washington on January 6, 2021, before a violent mob stormed the Capitol.

“Enjoy the history you made possible today,” Mr. Troupis wrote in a text message to Mr. Chesebro at 11:04 a.m. that day.

The new details come from the settlement of a lawsuit filed by the progressive law firm Law Forward and the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection at Georgetown University Law Center against Mr. Chesebro, Mr. Troupis and so-called fake voters in Wisconsin.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of legitimate presidential electors and voters in Wisconsin.

The alleged voters have already dealt with their part of the caseconceding that President Biden won the 2020 election.

Mr. Troupis and Mr. Chesebro agreed not to do similar work in the future, including not participating in a scheme to turn out fake voters.

The settlement also included a payment to the plaintiffs of an undisclosed amount.

“As these documents show, the fraudulent electoral plot originated in Wisconsin, with Trump campaign attorney James Troupis and legal counsel Ken Chesebro concocting the scheme that ultimately produced the false narrative used by the rioters to justify the attack on the Capitol ” said Mary McCord. , the director of Georgetown’s Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection.

Mr. Chesebro’s memos were at the center of the federal indictment against Mr. Trump on charges of trying to overturn the 2020 election. They are being presented as evidence of how the Trump campaign’s plans shifted from legal challenges to what prosecutors describe as a criminal plot to “engineer a fake controversy that would derail the proper certification of Biden as president-elect.”

The memos also became the basis for a strategy by conservative lawyers John Eastman and Trump, which a federal judge called a “coup in search of a legal theory.”

In a Nov. 19, 2020, email to Mr. Troupis, Mr. Chesebro wrote that the Trump lawyers should “take a stab at taking two bites at the apple — tie off, hoping to ultimately win on January 6, but also had to delay tying the apple.” lawsuit to try to win in the state Legislature on Dec. 8.

Several documents refer to a Dec. 15, 2020, meeting between Mr. Troupis and Mr. Chesebro with Mr. Trump in the Oval Office.

“Pretty clearly national people realize that this wouldn’t happen if you, Reince and others hadn’t pushed for it!” Mr. Chesebro wrote to Mr. Troupis two days before the White House visit.

They were told to keep the meeting secret and not to bring anything with them for Trump to sign, according to the messages.

“Reince was very explicit in his admonition that nothing about our meeting with the president should be shared with anyone,” Mr. Troupis wrote to Mr. Chesebro afterward.

Mr. Chesebro gave his account of the meeting to prosecutors in Michigan investigating the bogus electoral plot. He said Mr. Priebus had told the men not to get Trump’s hopes up about his chances of victory, but Mr. Chesebro acknowledged he had not listened to that advice.

“We had until January 6 to win,” Mr. Chesebro recalled saying to Mr. Trump at the meeting: according to audio obtained by CNNand added: “That really got me in trouble after that.”

A lawyer for Mr. Troupis did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Mr. Chesebro did not respond to a request for comment.

Mr Preibus declined to comment. A person familiar with his actions said he had recommended Mr. Troupis as a lawyer in Wisconsin, his home state, to the Trump campaign, but that he was not involved in the day-to-day legal efforts.

The person said he had arranged a “photo op” for the men only at Mr. Troupis’ request and that he had not met Mr. Chesebro or knew who he was until that day. The person gave a similar account of the meeting to Mr Chesebro, who said Mr Preibus did not want them to encourage the president to challenge the election results.

Still, both Mr. Troupis and Mr. Chesebro seemed to feel after the meeting that they had special knowledge of Mr. Trump’s plans.

After Mr Trump posted on Twitter that he would hold a rally in Washington on January 6: “Be there, it will be wild!” exhorting his followers in a message that served as a crucial call to action for far-right groups – Mr Chesebro wrote to Mr Troupis: “Wow. Based on three days ago, I think we have a unique understanding of this.”

Although the plans originated in Wisconsin, reports indicate that the men saw Georgia as the key to achieving their goals.

“If Georgia is to appear before the Supreme Court on January 6, it would be a rather bossy move if, when Pence arrives in Georgia, he simply refuses to open any of the Georgian envelopes,” Mr. Chesebro wrote on December 26, 2020. He referred to Vice President Mike Pence’s ceremonial role in Congress’ certification of the Electoral College results.

On the morning of January 6, Mr. Chesebro said he had worked with Michael Roman, the Trump campaign’s director of Election Day operations, and that a day earlier he had given documents for the false voter slates to an aide to Representative Mike Kelly, Republican. of Pennsylvania. That aide took them to the Senate parliamentarian, he said.

“Excellent,” Mr. Troupis replied. “Tomorrow, let’s talk about the SCOTUS strategy for the future. Enjoy the history you made possible today.”

Mr Chesebro later sent a photo of himself with the crowd on January 6 at 12:26 p.m.

Mr. Troupis responded with an emoji of clapping hands.
