Britain weather: Brits brace for ‘grey, damp and gloomy’ day with flood warnings – but ‘long sunny spells’ in sight

Britons have been told to prepare for a grey, damp and gloomy day, but long sunny spells are on the way.

The Met Office says parts of the country will soon be in sunshine – a stark contrast the temperatures below zero in recent days.

The mercury had dropped to -6.5 degrees Celsius yesterday Scotland‘s Altnaharra, but double digit temperatures in sight.

Forecasters say today will be damp for most, with flood warnings and warnings still in force.

The Met Office said: “The patchy fog will lift reluctantly on Tuesday morning but will remain grey, damp and cloudy in some eastern areas.

“Elsewhere the frost is melting away quickly spring sun with a chance of some showers.

“Windy in Scotland and Northern Ireland.”

Forecasters added: “Outbreaks of rain continue across eastern England and parts of the north west.

“Some slow moving and possibly heavy showers will affect the SE corner until the afternoon.

“Otherwise, many areas will be dry with sunny spells.”

This morning there were 35 flood warnings in force for Britain with 134 flood warnings remaining.

Forecasters say the weather will be even warmer tomorrow.

They said: “Any patches of fog will clear during the morning, cloudier skies in the east, perhaps with some light drizzle here.

“It is brighter in the west with long sunny spells. Temperatures are almost normal.”

And the mercury seems to be rising.

A temperature map shows this Plymouth, Exeter, Southampton, London and Manchester could reach 10 degrees tomorrow around 4pm.

Caernarfon looks to be the warmest, with 11 degrees forecast.

Snow covered Cumbria and Wiltshire on the weekend – with many waking up to a total whiteout.

Pictures showed snow-covered meadows as cars drove along icy roads in Nenthead.

Snow covered the ground as far south as Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire, where camels looked out of place.

A yellow one weather A warning was in force for a period of four hours on Saturday, covering parts of the country Gloucester, Worchester and parts of Wiltshire.

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said: “We had slightly more snow than expected.

“It is not unusual for this time of year. There is often some snow in March. It is an old saying that there is a greater chance of snow at Easter than in March. Christmasand there is some truth in that.”

Heavy rain is also falling across the country, with motorists fighting their way through water on Bognor’s Shripney Road.
