Tesco’s twist on the hot cross bun is sensational! The addition of candied peel and extra fruit makes it like a normal hot cross bun, but better, and it’s definitely more exciting.

They were so enticing, both in smell and appearance, that by the time the first bun had finished toasting I had already eaten the rest of the packet.

When untoasted they had a delicious soft texture, despite me having left the pack open for much of the day. The toasted ones were also delectable but for a slightly different reason: the chocolate orange perfectly melts within the bun and tastes incredible. – Luke Whelan

These were delicious. Perhaps not the best choice for those after a traditional hot cross bun, but luckily, I’m not one of them. It tasted like a cheesy roll and could even be used as a sandwich bread, but it still tasted great toasted with butter. I’d definitely add to my basket in the future.  – Alanah Kholsa

Traditionalists avert your eyes, there’s a new bun in town that might well take the crown for the most delicious Easter treat this year. While this triple choc affair looks like a hot cross bun, it tastes nothing like one – the cocoa-laced dough and combination of milk and dark choc chips see to that. It’s absolutely delicious though; we tried it toasted with a smidgen of butter and it was as if a pain au chocolate had happily collided with a teacake. Filling, flavoursome and a great alternative to the fruity versions. – Jo Tweedy

A chocoholic’s heaven. Delicious and not overly sweet, you can tell these are made with dark chocolate. They tasted more like something you’d get in a Parisian bakery than a hot cross bun. Slightly stodgy, but in a good way. For extreme indulgence, add Nutella or another chocolate spread. When toasted, the chocolate chips melt into the bread which is another level of decadence. Although be warned, you might be left with chocolatey fingers – Bridie Pearson-Jones

Apple and cinnamon is always going to be a winning combination and these didn’t disappoint. The dough was perfect when toasted – slightly crusty on the outside but sticky and soft on the inside. The spice from the cinnamon was a great complement to the sweet sultanas and candied apple flavour, as well as the salty smothering of butter I put on top. I have been in mourning for the M&S chocolate and salted caramel hot cross buns since they were discontinued last year, so I hoped the Tesco Finest version would be a fitting substitute.

There was a lot riding on this taste test, but I tried to keep all other variables the same – lightly toasted with butter on top and accompanied by a strong builder’s tea.

As I took a bite into the bun, the contrast between the sweet chocolate and caramel, plus the salt from the butter, was a perfect taste combination.

The texture was light and fluffy, although perhaps a little on the doughy side – but as I scoffed down the tasty bun, I didn’t have much time to notice.

Overall I’m pretty pleased with this product and, while it can’t live up to the wildly overblown expectations I had at the beginning of my experiment, it made for a delicious Saturday morning breakfast. – Jessica Taylor

Forget choosing between milk, dark or white; This year’s hot trend is savory Easter eggs.

But while sweet and salty can make for a successful flavor combination, do you really want to indulge in cheese, pork or even caviar instead of your usual piece of chocolate? SARAH RAINEY puts them to the test.

CREAMY WHITE CHOCOLATE CAVIAR

King’s Oscietra Caviar, £16.70 for 10g, kingsfinefood.co.uk

Blacksticks Easter W’egg’dge, £4, butlercheeses.co.uk

Combining earthy-flavored caviar and a white chocolate egg (sold separately) is said to enhance the creaminess of the chocolate.

I’m skeptical because seafood isn’t my favorite, but it’s delicious—even with my cheap Milky Bar egg: the salty, tangy bubbles of caviar add flavor and texture, making the chocolate look smoother. 5/5

SALTY MISO DARK CHOCOLATE

Cox & Co Cacao Miso Caramel Dark Chocolate Egg, £7.20, waitrose.com

This 47 percent Colombian cacao egg is flavored with natural caramel for sweetness and white miso powder, the Japanese soybean paste.

Unfortunately, the dark chocolate is thin and too bitter to counteract the savory miso, so the whole thing tastes more like a healthy food than a treat. 2/5

Blacksticks Easter W’egg’dge, £4, butlercheeses.co.uk

There’s something wonderfully indulgent about tucking into this slice of creamy Blacksticks blue cheese, wrapped to look like an Easter egg.

Eggstra Porky Easter gift, from £19.95, snafflingpig.co.uk

Eggstra Porky Easter gift, from £19.95, snafflingpig.co.uk

The taste is sharp and buttery at the same time. I recommend combining with a piece of intense dark chocolate. 4/5

DELICIOUS PORK PICK-ME-UP

Eggstra Porky Easter gift, from £19.95, snafflingpig.co.uk

A perfect choice for snack lovers. There is no chocolate here, but seven packs of 40 gram pork snacks, in flavors such as mustard and BBQ.

The taste of maple syrup reminds me of roasted honey ham, and I would prefer this to a classic chocolate egg. 5/5

Two local races in the Chicago area on Tuesday will gauge voters’ enthusiasm for progressive causes in an Illinois primary lacking drama at the top.

Progressive Democrats, who have built political power in Chicago over the past decade but received mixed reviews of their governance, are pushing for a change to the city’s property tax that would raise rates on prime properties to fund homelessness programs.

Progressives are also trying to hold on to the Cook County prosecutor’s office as the incumbent, Kim Foxx, who scrutinized the systems but drew criticism, prepares to leave office after two terms.

The contests have sparked debates about Chicago’s post-pandemic struggles with homelessness, crime and empty downtown office space, and the races will give voters a chance to have their say on the direction of the city under Ms. Foxx and Mayor’s leadership Brandon Johnson, a fellow progressive. who was elected last year.

With presidential nominations for the major parties already finalized, the results in Democratic-dominated Chicago could come down to whether progressives or moderates are more successful as voters.

The proposed tax change, which opponents say would be a major blow to the struggling commercial real estate industry, calls for lowering the transfer rate on properties selling for less than $1 million and imposing higher rates on homes and commercial buildings sold for are sold more. than $1 million.

The additional money — supporters say it would be at least $100 million a year — would be spent on addressing homelessness, with the details of that spending to be finalized later. The city council has yet to determine the new tax rates. Mr. Johnson, a former union organizer, supports the ballot measure and made it part of his campaign platform.

Democratic voters in Chicago and its inner-ring suburbs will also choose between two candidates vying to succeed Ms. Foxx, who made promised changes to the local justice system but also faced criticism for persistently high crime rates and her handling of a case involving the actor was involved. Jussie Smollett.

Clayton Harris III, a university professor and former prosecutor, has consolidated support from progressive politicians. His opponent, Eileen O’Neill Burke, a retired appellate judge, is trying to win the nomination by appealing to moderate and conservative voters.

The winner of the primary will face a Republican in November, but partisan races across the country are rarely competitive.

Yodha Box Office Collection Day 4: Sidharth Malhotra’s action thriller fails crucial first Monday test? Check detailed report

Yodha Box Office Collection Day 4: Recently, Sidharth Malhotra is in the news a lot, and rightly so because of his new film Yodha. These were the leading roles in this action thriller, directed by Pushkar Ojha and Sagar Ambre Disha Patani And Raashii Khanna. After three days at the box office, the film grossed a total of Rs 16.85 crore. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the working day on Monday is expected to cause a small drop in movie attendance. According to early estimates, the film has earned Rs 2.15 crore so far. After a terrible opening weekend, the film grossed Rs 4.1 crore nett in India on Saturday. With a significant increase in sales from Rs 6.01 crore on Saturday to Rs 7.25 crore on the first Sunday, Yodha’s weekend total reached Rs 17.5 crore on Sunday. However, this was a public holiday and Monday would be a quiet day.

Check Day-Wise Box Office Breakup of Yodha After 4 Days – Nett Collection (sacnilk):

  • Day 1 (First Friday): Rs 4.1 crore
  • Day 2: (First Saturday): Rs 5.75 crore
  • Day 3: (First Sun): Rs 7 crore
  • Day 4: (First Monday): Rs 2.15 crore (early estimates)
    Total: Rs 19 crore

Yodha vs Shaitaan vs Bastar: The Naxal Story Box Office Clash

It’s interesting to note that Yodha saw competition at the box office with the Adah Sharma film Bastar: The Naxal Story and defeated it by a significant margin. Basterwhich is based on the Naxalite-Maoist conflict in the Bastar area of Chhattisgarh, also features key performances by Raima Sen, Yashpal Sharma, Shilpa Shukla and Subrat Dutta. Shaitaan, starring Ajay Devgn and R Madhavan, is nonetheless a fierce rival to Sidharth’s film. The action thriller earned Rs 4.1 crore on its first day of release on the back of the huge buzz that preceded its debut. This amount is much smaller than the first-day net receipts of the biggest domestic films of 2024, inclusive Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (Rs 6.7 crore), Shaitaan (Rs 14.75 crore), and Fighter (Rs 22.5 crore).

The film is an intense action thriller that follows Arun Katyal, the commander of the Yodha Task Force, an elite force, on a thrilling rescue mission. Producers Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta and Shashank Khaitan are behind the film.

The Buy One Get One ticket offer increased the incentive to see the film and accelerated box office sales. However, at this time there is no desire or requirement for a prior reservation; instead, the film is completely dependent on seat reservations. Watch this space for more box office updates on Sidharth Malhotra, Raashii Khanna and Disha Patani starring Yodha!

Candice Warner has given a candid insight into her family life with her husband David following his retirement from Test cricket.

The former iron woman, 39, revealed that she gave the sports star a financial compensation.

Speaking backstage with Cooper and Matty Johns podcast in a joint interview with David, she explained that she was in control because of her husband37, is a huge spender.

She added that David doesn’t even have a banking app on his own phone.

“I’m pretty conservative, but David is definitely the publisher,” she explained.

Candice Warner has given a candid insight into her family life with her husband David following his retirement from Test cricket

‘David has an allowance. It’s a healthy compensation, so don’t think I have him by the balls and he can’t enjoy his life.’

He joked about his benefits: “I had a denial once, I had it once, and I said, ‘Have I been paid?’

Candice discussed how she manages their finances and said she has to make sure their mortgage and bills are paid.

But there is a downside to the arrangement: David cannot surprise his wife with lavish gifts.

“When I try to surprise Candice and buy her a gift, it doesn’t work because she will see the transaction coming!” he said.

The mother of three also gave an insight into how their family life will change following David’s retirement from test cricket.

She spoke enthusiastically about the time David is currently able to spend with her and their children – Ivy Mae, nine, Indi Rae, eight, and Isla Rose, five – but said he will still have to be away for a long time.

Candice admitted she was “relieved” after his retirement, but made clear people’s expectations that David will now just stay home, dad.

“It wasn’t a moment of sadness at all, which I think David was ready for – maybe I’m wrong – but it was just a relief,” she said.

‘For us it was a relief, but at the same time it also meant a lot more cricket. What people probably don’t realise, they think “he’s retired from test cricket, he’ll be home a lot more”, but that’s not the case at all.

“This is a rarity, but after that he will be gone for almost four to five months.”

David shocked the sporting world by announcing his retirement from Test and One Day International cricket in June last year.

Candice also raved about the time David can currently spend with her and their children - Ivy Mae, nine, Indi Rae, eight, and Isla Rose, five - but said he will still have to go away for extended periods of time.

And then last year he made the emotional decision to retire from one-day international cricket ahead of his final Test match.

In January, David hit a match-winning 57 runs in his final innings to help Australia secure victory at the SCG and complete a 3-0 victory over Pakistan, giving him the perfect farewell to red-ball cricket.

The veteran said he felt ‘comfortable’ when the time came to end his ODI career, including after Australia’s World Cup win in India late last year.

He stressed that the decision would create opportunities to play franchise cricket abroad and will not rule out a comeback if Australia needs an opener for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.

‘It was a decision I felt very comfortable with. To win in India, where we came from, was absolutely amazing,” he said.

“The team, not only led by Patty but coach Andrew McDonald himself, everything is just so calm and relaxed within the team.

“We go out there, we’re adults, we back ourselves to train as best we can and then go out there and perform. There’s never any extra pressure, it’s the same: come in and do what you need to get done. We love winning.

“When we lost two games in a row in India, the bond with each other only grew stronger and it is not by chance or coincidence that we got to where we were.

“The heroics of Maxi, the captain and the skill and execution of the way we played against India were phenomenal, and not to be ignored in the Calcutta semi-final.”

“I know the Champions Trophy is coming… if in two years I am playing decent cricket and if they need someone, I will be available,” he added.

HYALURONIC ACID is the natural substance that started the trend of skin care with active ingredients.

It is the solution for anyone looking for plumper, more hydrated skin.

We test three new serums for hydrating the skin

This week I’m testing three new serums.

Budget

The regular hyaluronic acid 2% helps nourish dry skin

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, £8.80 for 30ml, boots.com: If you’ve tried this before and thought you didn’t like it, the brand that brought single-ingredient skin care to the masses has updated the original formula for a consistency that’s less sticky and delivers more benefits.

The Ordinary has added ceramides that help nourish dry skin.

I prefer the new texture – the lightweight consistency lasts like silk and absorbs almost immediately, which is great for applying makeup on top.

I didn’t expect to love this as much as I do.

It’s definitely a new favorite.

Bioderma Hydrabio Hyalu+ Hydrating Facial Serum for Dehydrated Skin, £32 for 30ml, boots.com: You may recognize the Bioderma brand from the cult micellar water loved by industry experts and celebrities alike.

But they also offer a truly impressive – and underrated – range of targeted skin treatments.

This hyaluronic acid serum also contains niacinamide, which is one of my favorite skincare products thanks to its multi-tasking soothing and spot-fighting properties.

Unfortunately, I found that this left my skin sticky and starting to pill when I applied my moisturizer to it, which is a big no-no for me.

Luxury

I was immediately impressed with the Shani Darden Skin Care Moisture Boost plumping serum

Shani Darden Skin Care Moisture Boost Plumping Serum, £72 for 39ml, cultbeauty.com: This is the first product I’ve tried from Shani Darden, and I was immediately impressed.

It’s not just any hyaluronic acid, but contains a whole cocktail of other skin-loving ingredients: panthenol, snow mushroom, glycerin and brightening antioxidants.

From the first use my skin glowed.

You only need one pump for the entire face.

If you have the money, this is a clear winner, but The Ordinary takes the top spot on balance due to its affordable price tag.

Choice of the week

Every morning, the man once called Britain’s Bill Gates goes to work in his mansion in San Francisco’s cool Pacific Heights neighborhood.

That man, Mike Lynch, contacts his investment firm Invoke Capital about its recent performance. He speaks to researchers in Cambridge, England, whom he personally funds, about the ways artificial intelligence can be used to help people with hearing problems. He receives updates on the heritage Red Poll cattle and other livestock on his farm in Suffolk, eastern England.

Ultimately, the 58-year-old Mr. Lynch turns to his most important task: defending himself against 16 charges of conspiracy and fraud. If convicted, he faces 20 years behind bars.

The trial begins Monday in San Francisco, where federal prosecutors — who extradited Mr. Lynch from Britain in May and placed him under house arrest — have accused the former technology magnate of defrauding Hewlett-Packard of billions when he HP sold its software company Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011.

In 2012, HP announced a Write-down of $8.8 billion and blamed “serious accounting irregularities” at Autonomy. Stunned investors called it one of the worst takeovers in history. Mr. Lynch has since fought a series of complex, overlapping legal battles in the United States and Britain.

In 2022, a London judge ruled a civil case found Mr Lynch and Sushovan Hussain, Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, liable for defrauding HP. The judge said the case was “one of the longest and most complex in English legal history”, with the trial lasting more than three months, the presentation of dozens of thousands of documents and ultimately a judgment running to more than a thousand pages.

Mr. Lynch disputes HP’s claims and plans to appeal the ruling. His lawyers called it “a case study in buyer’s remorse” and pointed the finger at HP executives for mismanaging Autonomy. Hearings were held last month to decide damages, with HP demanding around $4 billion and Mr Lynch claiming he was owed nothing.

Mr. Lynch’s legal troubles also recall the decline of Hewlett-Packard, once a titan of the American technology industry. The former Silicon Valley giant has since broken up and has long been overshadowed by younger leviathans like Alphabet, Apple and Microsoft.

Mr. Lynch’s chances for his upcoming criminal trial do not look good. The judge, Charles Breyer of the Northern District of California, rejected some of the evidence that Mr. Lynch’s lawyers tried to present that they said showed HP mismanaged Autonomy after acquiring the company. Judge Breyer also oversaw the trial of Mr. Hussain, who was also convicted in 2018 of charges similar to those Mr. Lynch now faces. Mr. Hussain was recently released from a federal prison in Pennsylvania.

Last year, Mr. Lynch lost a bid to avoid extradition despite lobbying the British government, which approved his transfer to the United States on the same day as the verdict against him in the civil case brought by HP.

Last month he sued the Serious Fraud Office, the British securities regulator, over the way the US government handled data requests. The lawsuit, a last-ditch effort to delay the American criminal trial, was arranged earlier this month.

Mr. Lynch still has significant resources to defend himself in a San Francisco courtroom. “Mike Lynch is confident he will be proven right when he finally gets the chance to tell his story to a jury,” Reid Weingarten, one of the prominent white-collar lawyers representing Mr. Lynch in the United States, said in a statement . . “We look forward to this opportunity to tell Mike Lynch’s story and enable him to put this unfortunate chapter behind him.”

Since his extradition, Mr Lynch has lived under 24-hour surveillance and court-mandated private security, a drastic fall for a man once considered one of Britain’s greatest technology success stories.

Born into a working-class family outside London, he went to private school on a scholarship and graduated from Cambridge before founding Autonomy in 1996. The company helped clients analyze unstructured information to discover hidden insights about their business.

By 2011, Autonomy had become one of Britain’s leading technology companies, based in Cambridge, also known as ‘Silicon Fen’.

“He has certainly raised the profile of Cambridge technology,” says Tony Quested, editor of Business Weekly, a technology trade magazine based in Cambridge. “There wasn’t much back then.”

Mr Lynch became a celebrity in British tech circles. He was a member of the Royal Society, one of the country’s top scientific societies; an adviser to David Cameron, then Prime Minister; and was on the board of the BBC.

HP, led at the time by Léo Apotheker, a former head of German software giant SAP, came up with the idea of acquiring Autonomy to transform itself from an aging hardware supplier to a higher-margin software company. PK agreed to purchase Autonomy in mid-2011 for approximately 60 percent more than the market value.

The situation deteriorated rapidly.

Mr. Apotheker resigned from his position as CEO a month after the deal was announced, as investors and analysts revolted against both the high price of the Autonomy acquisition and a plan to spin off HP’s personal computer division (which emerged from another major acquisition of Compaq.)

He was replaced by Meg Whitman, the former eBay chief who served on HP’s board. Within HP, Autonomy’s star quickly faded as sales fell rapidly. Mr Lynch, who clashed with Ms Whitman, was fired in May 2012.

Later that year, HP said it had been duped by Autonomy, misled by improprieties including rolling back contracts and using hardware sales to boost revenue, especially at the end of a quarter. The multibillion-dollar write-off marked the start of Mr. Lynch’s legal troubles, which will culminate this month in another long and complex lawsuit.

Over the years, Mr. Lynch has denied the characterization that the company was rife with fraud. He has accused Ms. Whitman, now U.S. ambassador to Kenya, and other senior executives who clashed with him over Autonomy’s breakup. His lawyers have argued in lawsuits that HP executives, for example, knew about the hardware sales and did not raise them as a problem.

They have pointed to internal emails showing shifting calculations of Autonomy’s value, which at one point was estimated at more than $11 billion. They also noted that accountants from EY, the global accounting and consulting firm formerly known as Ernst & Young, who worked for HP, had not believed that Autonomy’s acquisition price was too high because of accounting irregularities.

U.S. federal prosecutors argued in court papers that Mr. Lynch, long known as a tough boss, liked to be tough and maintain control. (In one filing, government attorneys described an internal sales video at Autonomy in which he portrayed himself as (a Mafia don, and noted that he had named conference rooms after villains from the James Bond films.) Witness testimony included Ms. Whitman and Catherine Lesjak, HP’s former chief financial officer.

Prosecutors have sought to introduce tens of thousands of pieces of evidence and a witness list of 44 people, and they estimate the trial could last until the end of May.

Mr. Lynch’s freedom and his legacy are at stake.

He has tried to foster a reputation as a public intellectual by giving interviews on the subject of technology, but has kept a low profile since his extradition. His last published piece was in April, when he encouraged British policymakers to do so embrace AI startups.

Autonomy is now part of the Canadian software company OpenText. Mr. Lynch’s investment firm, Invoke, has made crucial early investments in companies such as cybersecurity provider Darktrace.

But associations with Mr. Lynch can be fraught. In December, Darktrace shareholders rejected a candidate for the board proposed by Invoke. And in the company financial returnsDarktrace has described “Autonomy-related matters” as a risk “from both a reputational and legal perspective.”

Elon Musk’s SpaceX Aces will conduct its third test flight with a spaceship on Thursday

San Francisco: Billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX successfully launched the third test flight of its massive Starship vehicle on Thursday.

With winds wreaking havoc and delaying the launch by an hour, the flight took off at 9:25 a.m. EDT (6:55 IST) from SpaceX’s Starbase facility near Boca Chica Beach in south Texas.

“Launch of a spaceship!” the company wrote on X.com.

‘The spaceship has reached its orbital speed! Congratulations @SpaceX team!!” SpaceX founder Elon Musk added in a message.

This comes after two test flights that were only partially successful in April and November last year.

After the flights, SpaceX was grounded by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

On Wednesday, the agency cleared the third test flight, saying the company “met all safety, environmental, policy and financial responsibility requirements.”

“The third flight test is designed to build on what we’ve learned from previous flights while pursuing a number of ambitious goals, including successfully taking off on both stages, opening and closing Starship’s cargo door, a demonstration of propellant transfer during upper stage coast. phase, the first-ever restart of a Raptor engine in space, and a controlled reentry of Starship,” the company wrote in a mission statement on its website.

SpaceX noted that the third flight “will also follow a new trajectory, landing the Starship in the Indian Ocean.”

“This new flight path will allow us to try new techniques, such as burning engines in space, while maximizing public safety,” the report said.

The 120-meter-high Starship rocket, together with the Heavy booster, aims to help astronauts land on the moon during the manned Artemis 3 mission in 2026.

Early detection of colon cancer can potentially prevent a majority of deaths from this disease 73 percent theirs. But just 50 to 75 percent middle-aged and older adults who need regular screening to be tested.

One reason, doctors say, is that the screening methods scare many people away.

For people at average risk, there are two options: a colonoscopy every 10 years or a fecal test every one to three yearsdepending on the type of test.

Or, as Dr. Folasade P. May, a gastroenterologist at UCLA Health, says: “Either you take this horrible laxative and then a doctor puts an instrument on your butt, or you have to manipulate your own poop.”

But something much simpler is in store: a blood test. Gastroenterologists say such tests could become part of the routine blood tests that doctors order when someone comes for an annual physical, for example.

“I think this is going to take off,” said Dr. John M. Carethers, a gastroenterologist and vice chancellor for health sciences at the University of California, San Diego.

About 53,000 Americans are expected to die from colorectal cancer this year. It is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, and while the death rate has decreased among older adults, it has increased among people under age 55.

Current guidelines recommend screenings from age 45. The problem is causing more people to get screened.

Enter the blood test. It takes advantage of the discovery that colon cancer and large polyps – clumps of cells lining the colon that occasionally turn into cancer – release fragments of DNA in the blood.

a study published Wednesday in The New England Journal of Medicine found that a blood test that looks for such DNA, called Shield and made by the company Guardant Health, revealed 87 percent of cancers were in early and curable stages. The false positive rate was 10 percent.

“This will be big news,” said Dr. May, an advisor to Exact Sciences, maker of the Cologuard fecal test.

But there’s a caveat to the blood test: Although it detects cancers, it misses most large polyps; he finds only 13 percent of it. In contrast, the fecal test detects 43 percent and a colonoscopy finds 94 percent, said Dr. Carethers.

Although polyps are usually harmless, a few can turn into cancer. Therefore, doctors want to find and remove them all to prevent the formation of cancer.

Dr. Barbara Jung, chair of the department of medicine at the University of Washington and president of the American Gastroenterological Association, said patients should be fully informed before opting for a blood test. In particular, they need to understand that while this test helps detect cancer at an early stage, it does not prevent it because it is not good at detecting precancerous polyps.

“We need to have that discussion,” with patients, she said. But, she added, “much of this will end up with GPs who already have very little time to get through a litany of screenings and counselling.”

Doctors will also need to explain to patients that if the blood test result is abnormal, they should schedule a colonoscopy to detect polyps or cancer early and remove them if they are present.

It is also not clear how often people should take the blood test. Guardant suggested every three years, but that recommendation is not well supported, Dr. Jung said.

Dr. Jung added that she would like to know whether the blood test performs well in people who are too young to qualify for existing screening tests. But this requires additional research. She is concerned about the rising rates of colon cancer among younger people. It would be “very attractive,” she said, if people could get a blood test for colon cancer at age 30.

“That would be my biggest excitement,” said Dr. Jung.

The big unknown, however, is the costs. Guardant has applied to the Food and Drug Administration for approval to commercialize the test. The company now sells it as a “laboratory-based test,” which does not require FDA approval but is also not covered by health insurance. For those who want to pay out of pocket, the price is $895. But, said Matt Burns, a spokesman for Guardant, the company will work with Medicare and Medicaid and private insurers to “finalize prices” if they become approved, said Matt Burns, a spokesman for Guardant.

Dr. William Grady, the medical director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center’s Gastrointestinal Cancer Prevention Program who is a corresponding author on the Guardant-sponsored study, said the company might settle on a price that makes it comparable to the price of the other screening methods. The costs of the Cologuard fecal test $581 to $681. Colonoscopies, which are usually needed half as often, tend to cost $1,250 to $4,800, although some hospitals charge more. The average cost of a colonoscopy in the United States is $2,750. The tests are usually covered by insurance.

Dr. May cautioned that patients should know that these three screening tests are not equivalent. With the blood test, she said, “we are moving from prevention to early detection.”

But, she said, the blood test is quite simple. When a doctor requests routine blood tests, all that needs to be done is a colorectal cancer test.

“That’s phenomenally exciting,” she said.

And the ease of use could outweigh the test’s limitations, said Dr. Carethers, who wrote an editorial team in the journal associated with the research. After all, he said, the goal of screening is to reduce the number of deaths from colon cancer for the population as a whole.

If a blood test means that many more people are screened, the result – fewer deaths from colon cancer – will be favorable.

“The best screening test is the one completed by the patient,” he wrote.
