Taylor Swift makes Edinburgh shake, shake, shake: Scientists confirm the star’s thousands of fans made the earth move during her Eras Tour gigs at Murrayfield

  • Taylor Swift received a warm welcome during her performances in Scotland last weekend

Taylor Swift‘s fans caused such a stir during her Eras Tour performances in Scotland this weekend that seismologists recorded tremors almost four miles away.

About 220,000 people turned out to see the American pop icon at the Murrayfield Stadium Edinburgh between Friday and Sunday, an average of 73,000 per night.

And as the 34-year-old headed north for her dates in Britain, Swifties showed their appreciation by dancing and stomping loud enough for the British Geological Society to notice small movements on the ground.

“If you can imagine it, there are 73,000 people in one concentrated place – jumping, clapping, dancing,” says Sophie Butcher, a volcanologist from Edinburgh who was in the crowd on one of the dates.

‘In addition, there is a large bass sound system. All that energy travels through the ground,” she said, as reported by The times.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) was able to record small measurements by overlaying similarities in movements from night to night.

They said her choreographed performance between dates was so similar that they could clearly distinguish the noise of the concerts from the noise of the wider city.

Taylor’s 2017 hit Ready For It registered the loudest response of the evenings, played just before 8pm.

Cruel Summer, which came out much earlier in the set, also received a relatively strong response, but came in at about half the size of Ready For It.

Champagne Problems and world hit Shake It Off were also recognizable by their seismological signature.

Still, fan activity was not enough to give the BGS a clear picture of the magnitude of the earthquake.

Butcher said the ability to record 73,000 people “jumping and dancing to their favorite songs” at such a distance was nevertheless “impressive.”

The concerts created an exciting atmosphere around Scotland’s largest stadium, home to the country’s national rugby union team.

Public transport in the city had to operate at a higher capacity last weekend to take the tens of thousands of Swifties to and from the concert location.

And fireworks light up the sky above Murrayfield as Taylor Swift ends the opening night of her Eras Tour in Britain.

On June 7, Taylor even hinted that she would return to Scotland, to loud cheers from the crowd.

She told the crowd, “This has been the most crazy thing. We have to do this again!

‘My biggest regret is that I should have played more in Scotland. I should have taken every tour to Scotland.

“I can’t stop looking at the crowd…it’s captivating.”
