Llanddwvn is without a doubt the most romantic place in Wales – here’s why. Wales’ own version of Saint Valentines is Saint Dwynwen, patron saint of lovers. Legend has it that Dwynwen was a 5th century princess who had fallen in love with a commoner, but her father had already promised her hand in marriage to another. Dwynwen prayed that her lover’s life would be spared and she would be allowed to live unmarried. God granted her wishes and out of gratitude she became a nun and her church on the island became a sanctuary. Living a life as a hermit, she continued to pray for loved ones and along with a well on the island that was said to predict the fate of loved ones depending on whether there were fish swimming in the water.
