The Scar Beneath Kate Middleton’s Brunette Locks and William’s ‘Harry Potter Scar’

The Princess of Wales is famous for the bouncy blow-dry and dark brown locks that royal observers envy.

Aside from making Kate look glamorous, the waves of shiny hair also hide a prominent scar on her head from when she was a child.

And it’s something she has in common with her husband, William, who also bears a large, if rarely noticed, scar on the left side of his head.

Kate’s nine-inch blemish was first spotted in 2011 when the princess conducted her first solo royal engagement at a private dinner at Clarence House.

Prince William suffered a scar from a golfing accident when he was eight years old. He calls it his “Harry Potter scar,” like the one on the forehead of Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe

Standing in for Charles, Kate wore a vintage silver evening gown with a beaded halter neck, her hair in a half-up, half-up style.

The scar on the side of her left temple was unexpectedly visible that night. A spokesperson later confirmed it was the result of surgery performed when she was a young child.

An official statement explained that “the scar was related to a childhood operation,” but said the details of the operation were a private matter.

Royal sources confirmed it was a ‘very serious operation’ but declined to comment further.

John Scurr, a consultant surgeon at London’s Lister Hospital, said it was unlikely the scar was due to a tumour.

“I really doubt it was a serious medical condition and I would say it is the result of an arteriovenous malformation – a birthmark – that has been removed,” he said.

“Given the measurement, it’s remarkable that no one noticed it before.”

Her husband Prince William also has a scar on his head, which he previously called his ‘Harry Potter scar’.

William’s scar – which gets inflamed when he plays sports – is said to have been sustained in a golfing accident.

According to Hello!he suffered the injury in 1991 while playing golf with friends at school in Wokingham.

The eight-year-old prince suffered a basilar skull fracture and was taken to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London for surgery.

Princess Diana stayed with him overnight and Prince Harry paid a visit the next morning before going to school.

His father Charles also came to check on his son and kept in touch with doctors when he left to go to the opera.

William told the story of the injury while being interviewed by a 10-year-old cancer patient for CBBC’s Newsround in 2009.

Speaking to Alice, a patient at the Royal Marsden Hospital, he pointed to his head and said, “That was before my Harry Potter scar, as I call it, right here.”

“I call it that because sometimes it glows and some people notice it — other times they don’t notice it at all.”

“I was hit by a golf club while playing golf with a friend,” he explained.

“Yeah, we were on a putting green and next thing you know there was a seven iron and it came out of nowhere and hit me in the head.

“I was in the hospital, but it was very little compared to the number of times you’ve been in the hospital.”
