Tia’s final message: Heartbroken boyfriend of 18-year-old run down and killed by an out-of-control bus reveals what she told him moments before she died

The heartbroken boyfriend of a teenager killed by a bus plowing over a footpath as she left a beauty salon appointment has revealed the last message she sent him.

Tia Cameron, 18, had just finished getting her eyelashes done in Brisbane’s CBD about 5pm on March 8 when the bus veered off the road and fatally pinned her against the wall of a building.

Three months later, her heartbroken boyfriend Hayden McKinlay has gathered the courage to finally speak about her death.

The high school sweethearts were planning their future together when tragedy struck.

He said he received a video message from Ms Cameron showing off her new eyelashes just before she left the salon and walked out.

“Our last call was, ‘I love you and I’ll see you soon,’” he said

Mr McKinlay said that even months later he still struggles to believe that the woman he had been in a relationship with since childhood would not suddenly reappear.

‘We had so much planned together: traveling, buying our first house, having children. It was all there until this happened,” Mr McKinlay said 9NEWS.

“I still think I’m still going to hear from her, I’m still going to see her, the truth is that’s not going to happen.”

After extensive investigations by the Forensic Crash Unit, 70-year-old Linday Selby was charged on Monday with one count of reckless driving causing death.

Four passengers and the driver were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The bus driver is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on June 26.

“He hasn’t approached any of us to apologize or anything that’s really upsetting,” Mr McKinlay said.

When asked why he had not made contact, Selby said: “Listen mate, this is a very difficult situation for me. There is more than one victim and that is all I have to say about it.”

Ms Cameron was reportedly facing the wall of a building in Anzac Square when she was hit from behind and pushed against the wall of the building.

She tragically died at the scene, despite the best efforts of emergency responders.

The incident caused chaos at the scene at the intersection of Edward and Adelaide streets, not far from Brisbane Central Station, with pedestrians running from the crash site and traffic being diverted during rush hour.

WItnesses described hearing the bus crash into a light pole before hitting the sidewalk and “seeing rocks flying,” the Courier said.

At the time of the incident, District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Steve Watterson described the scene as ‘horrible’.

Ms Cameron’s family also mourned the loss of the vibrant teenager who they said was ‘stolen from us’.

Her mother, Jade Te Awhitu, said the loss was devastating.

“She was only 18 and had her whole life ahead of her,” she said.

‘She was beautiful, outgoing and unique, truly unique. She loved the beach, the Gold Coast, fashion and looking after her partner’s small puppies and dogs. She was very close to all her family.”

Karma Te Awhitu, Mrs Cameron’s devastated aunt, said: ‘We feel she has been stolen from us.’

“She messaged me at 4pm saying she was getting her eyelashes done and asked if I wanted to meet up for a quick cocktail before she went home,” she said.

‘When I hadn’t heard from her and her partner hadn’t heard from her, we realized she was missing and started looking for her.

“I called the hospital and Hayden called the police and even went to the police station to file a missing person report because it was so strange for her.”

At Mrs Cameron’s emotional funeral service, tThe aunt said she would miss her niece’s laugh, “questionable” sense of humor and “dorkiness.”

‘You had plans to go to college and continue your education. You had plans to travel. You always talked about being a mother, even from a very young age, and I knew you would be a great mother one day.”

Ms Cameron attended Ferny Grove State High but left school at 16 to work in the beauty industry.

She got an administrative job at the city’s prestigious Brisbane Club.

Ms Te Awhitu said while her daughter loved that work, her interest was in beauty and cosmetics.
