A heartbroken family has paid tribute to a ‘sweet and friendly’ 17-year-old boy who tragically died in a lake in Staffordshire.

Sonny Leese Clark, from Leek, sadly lost his life while out with two friends after falling into Rudyard Lake on Friday evening.

The body of the teenager was found last night around 5pm Police were called to the scene when three young men were spotted in the water.

Two managed to escape and were examined by paramedics West Midlands Ambulance service before being taken to hospital.

In a heartbreaking tribute, Sonny’s family said: ‘Sonny – our sweet, kind, good-natured boy. You had grown into a wonderful young man. Always helpful, adventurous, fearless and quick to smile.

“You were a very special and wonderful brother to your siblings, and our lives are diminished by your loss.

“We love you and we always will. 17 and his life was just beginning the next chapter, his book was too short.”

The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for HM Coroner, Staffordshire the police said.

Chief Inspector Mark Barlow, from Moorlands Local Policing Team, said: “Our thoughts and condolences go out to the boy’s family at this difficult time.

“A large number of officers and emergency services have been working around the clock and through the night since this was first reported to us.

“I would like to thank members of the public who respected the cordon and avoided the area while we worked on the scene.

“This is a tragic case that I know will cause great sadness in the local community.

“Our priority now is to ensure we can do everything possible to support the boy’s family.”
