These are the countries that have said they will pause funding to UNRWA

Several countries said this weekend they would suspend funding for the United Nations agency that provides food, water and other essential services to Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.

The announcements came after Israel accused a dozen employees of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) of participating in the October 7 attacks led by Hamas. The United Nations said Friday it had fired the accused workers and was investigating.

Here are the countries that said their funding from the agency would be affected in some way, ranked by the amount they pledged.

  • The United States, UNRWA's largest donor, said on Friday it would suspend funding.

  • Germany announced on Saturday evening that it would also temporarily suspend all new funding to the agency pending the outcome of an investigation into the allegations.

  • Japan said Sunday that it has suspended aid “temporarily”.

  • Canada welcomed the news that UNRWA would launch an investigation, saying Friday that it had temporarily suspended all additional funding to the organization in the meantime.

  • Netherlands on Sunday said “UNRWA will not receive Dutch funding until the investigation is completed, not even in response to new requests.”

  • Britain said on Saturday it was “shocked” by the allegations, in a statement announcing its decision to suspend future funding.

  • Australia responded to the allegations by saying it would “temporarily pause the disbursement of recently announced funding.”

  • Finland announced his decision on Saturday.

The United States and Germany are by far the largest donors to UNRWA. The United States has pledged $344 million and Germany $202 million by 2022. UNRWA figures. Each of the other countries mentioned has pledged $30 million or less.
