Uttarakhand UCC Bill: The draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was approved by the Uttarakhand Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday. The draft of the UCC bill was approved during a meeting at CM Dhami's official residence on Sunday evening.

Now it will come up during the four-day Assembly session, which begins on February 5 and continues until February 8.

Meanwhile, Muslim Seva Sangathan based in the hill state has opposed the bill.

Section 144 has been implemented to maintain law and order while the bill is introduced in the Assembly, an official said on Sunday. A statement has also been issued by Dehradun District Magistrate Sonika.

As mentioned earlier, the district administration has imposed Section 144 within a radius of 300 meters around the Assembly premises.

Dehradun District Magistrate Sonika said that there will be a ban on activities such as demonstrations by organizations and communities in the designated area during the meeting starting Monday.

Earlier on Saturday, Prime Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held a cabinet meeting at the state secretariat to discuss the draft report on the Uniform Civil Code. During the crucial state-level meeting, the draft report of the Uniform Civil Code will receive Cabinet approval, following which the government will present the UCC bill in the Assembly on February 6. The drafting committee of the UCC, headed by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, submitted the draft to Chief Minister Dhami on Friday.

Chief Minister Dhami said on Friday, “We have promised our people to take the UCC to Uttarakhand before the Assembly meets. The rollout of the UCC will be in line with a resolution passed by the BJP.”

Taking to his social media on Friday, CM Dhami said it was an important day for the people of the state as the UCC will help realize the vision of 'Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat'.

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC), part of the BJP manifesto ahead of the 2022 Assembly Polls, will provide a legal framework for uniform laws on marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance for all citizens of the stands. The biggest highlight of the Uniform Civil Code is that these laws are binding on all citizens regardless of their religion.
