A teenager has been charged with the attempted murder of a police officer in South Australia.

Police allege the 15-year-old boy hit the officer twice in the head with a flashlight as he approached him in Whyalla Stuart at around 10:20pm on Thursday.

The officer checked his well-being, as he had been reported missing by relatives earlier that evening.

After the alleged attack, the boy fled.

He was located at his home in Whyalla Stuart at around 11:45 pm a short time later and charged with attempted murder.

The injured officer, 34, was taken to Whyalla Hospital for treatment. He has now been fired.

The teenager has been denied bail and will appear before Whyalla Magistrates Court on Friday.
