Would YOU stay here? Visitors slam ‘death trap’ floating stairs to get to the toilet at London holiday apartment

A chic one London The apartment’s floating stairs may look impressive, but have been labeled a ‘crazy death trap’ by guests who have to navigate a series of small and winding steps to reach the toilet.

Dutch holidaymaker Marius de Graaf posted a stunning image on Tuesday of the bizarre climb to the bathroom of his two-storey accommodation.

It shows eight black steps of various whimsical shapes hanging on the wall above a regular staircase with only a metal pole to grab onto for safety.

The one-bed studio apartment in Covent Garden, London, is listed on Booking.com and the images show how the steps wind around the wall to a bathroom and roof terrace.

Marius, 54, revealed he had to go down the stairs backwards and likened the experience to ‘climbing out of a bunk bed’.

He claims the host contacted him shortly after booking his trip in November 2023 to warn him about the stairs and ask if he has any mobility issues.

Booking.com reviews are generally positive, but there have also been numerous complaints about the stairs, with some calling them “a death trap,” “scary,” “dangerous” and “crazy.”

One pensioner commented that she found it ‘difficult’ to get up and down to the toilet, despite praising it as a ‘great design feature’.

Facebook users even joked that they would rather “wet themselves” or “use a bucket” than climb the stairs to go to the bathroom.

Marinus says: ‘When we entered the apartment, we immediately saw them. They cannot be missed.

‘It was like getting out of a bunk bed in comfort.

‘It turned out that walking on it didn’t make much difference if you started with the right foot. Going down was easy if you faced the stairs.

‘When we booked the place we got a message from the owner asking if we had any mobility issues and he informed us about the stairs.

‘We had no problems and we thought the stairs looked interesting in the photos on the booking website.

“I understand why the owner made sure we got along with them.

‘We love the place because it is perfectly located between Leicester Square and Covent Garden, so the stairs have only enhanced the experience.’

A third said: ‘The top floor apartment is definitely not suitable for people with walking difficulties due to the stairs to the bathroom. This had no negative impact on our stay at all. I would highly recommend it.’

A fourth commented: ‘Stairs to the bathroom/roof terrace are crazy and take some getting used to in terms of safety – but [it’s] a mark.’

One star review complained: ‘I would warn people about the stairs in this apartment, they are not for the faint of heart, in fact dangerous is a word I would use.’

The owner responded that the stairs are “visible in the room photos” and that he has “no problems using them” despite being in his 60s.

Marinus’ Facebook post describes the treacherous climb as a “death stair” and has attracted more than 5,000 reactions and 1,200 comments.

One user wrote: ‘I would just wet myself.’

Another agreed, saying: ‘Or buy a bucket of fun.’

A third added: “They are definitely different.”

A fourth wrote: ‘That would deserve a negative review and feedback!’

A Booking.com spokesperson said: ‘Reviews left by previous guests are a great way for travelers to check if the property is suitable for them, alongside photos from the property owner and details of accessibility, which our accommodation partners are responsible for for the experience guests have staying on their property.”

The property owner has been contacted for comment.
