DESPITE spring officially starting last week, the wet weather means many of us are still struggling to keep our homes dry.

Instead of spending a small fortune on fancy dehumidifiers, a cleaning expert has a simple method to prevent mold and mildew using 3p children’s toys.

If you’re not already following Anita Birges, get ready to meet your new favorite influencer.

The domestic goddess is known for her incredible cleaning and organization hacks, with her Instagram page quickly gaining more than 152,000 followers.

That’s not surprising, as the Australian has some incredibly budget-friendly ways to tackle household chores.

She even has her own hack to prevent mold and mildew in your closet, while combating common home pests.

Instead of using a chemical deterrent or an expensive dehumidifier, the smart mom will use a few drops of essential oil on a giant piece of chalk (yes, you read that right)

Although it sounds like an old wives’ tale, the household hack works because the chalk absorbs excess moisture, preventing dampness and a nasty musty smell.

Meanwhile, the essential oils work to deter mice and other pests that want to gnaw on your clothes.

Unsurprisingly, her hack has gone viral on Instagram, with the content creator showing how easy this tool is to create.

“Put a few drops of essential oil on a piece of jumbo chalk and place it in the cupboards or drawers of your wardrobe,” she explained in the reel, which has been liked more than 1,300 times.

The cleaning expert even explained which essential oils to use depending on the problem you currently have in your home.

Nine tips to heat your home, dry your clothes and prevent mold in the winter

In the caption she wrote: “Clove Oil – Prevents Mold! The chalk absorbs moisture, while the clove oil is known to kill mold spores.

“Lavender Oil – Removes moths and silverfish.

“Peppermint oil – Keeps your drawers smelling fresh and deters spiders, mice and other creepy crawlies.”

However, she did tell fans that you should ideally use one oil per crayon – to get the maximum impact.

You don’t even have to put it in a container, as the influencer says: “I put it on the side of my drawer and at the top of my wardrobe. No container on the top shelf.”

If you weren’t quite tempted to try this hack yet, most of the essential oils she uses cost less than £4 per bottle online and in store.

For example, you can buy a bottle of clove oil in Boots for just £2.99, while Amazon has lavender (£2.49) and peppermint oil for just £3.79.

You can even buy a 20-pack of jumbo chalk for $3.25 on the website, meaning you’ll only spend $3 cents to rid your home of mold.

The cleaning method has even been tried and tested in other parts of the house, with one fan commenting: “Clove oil keeps those little ants out of my kitchen.”

It looks like with this hack you won’t have to worry about mildew or household pests for much longer.
