Shimla/Una: Rain-related incidents have claimed 43 lives in Himachal Pradesh, with the state suffering a cumulative loss of Rs 352 crore since the arrival of the monsoon on June 24, according to the state’s emergency operations centre.

In the space of two weeks, as many as 79 people have suffered injuries and four are missing.

The total death toll from center-reported disasters such as landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts is one. others is 42, according to officials.

Of them, 17 died in traffic accidents, eight after a fall from a height and seven from drowning, the center said.

One person died and two others were injured when the roof of a gurdwara in Paonta Sahib in Sirmaur district collapsed on Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Milandeep Singh from Haridwar, Uttarakhand.

A total of 130 people trapped in a crematorium in Chadatgarh village were evacuated after flooding in a nearby ravine caused by widespread rain. The villagers had to leave the burning pyre in the water and climb to nearby rooftops to save their lives, officials said.

About 168 roads were closed, 107 of which would be repaired by tonight, they said.

The Kasauli-Garkhal-Dharampur road in Solan district was closed to vehicular traffic on Thursday evening after a landslide near Datyar. The affected piece had also eroded in August last year, local residents said.

Traffic movement on National Highway 5 (Shimla-Chandigarh) was also affected by the landslide for some time as it lies just below Kasauli road, they said on Friday.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Una Vishwadev Mohan Chauhan reached the spot and helped evacuate the villagers with the help of the fire brigade, saying that all of them were rescued.

Light to moderate rain showers have battered various parts of the state since Thursday night with Shimla recording a downpour of 50mm, Sarahan 43.5mm, Mashobra 37mm, Nahan 36mm, Una and Kharapathar 31mm each, Narkanda 26mm, Solan 22 .5mm Jubbarhatti and Dhaulakuan 20mm each and Kufri 16mm, Bharmour 15mm.

The local meteorological office has issued an orange alert for isolated places in plains, low and medium hills in nine of the 12 districts, excluding Kullu, Kinnaur and Lahaul and Spiti districts, for July 8 and 9.

For July 10, the department has issued a yellow alert and predicted a wet spell in the state through July 13. Light to moderate precipitation associated with thunder and lightning is likely to continue in most parts of the state for the next 4 to 5 days, the Met office said.

The weather department has also warned of flash flooding along water bodies in Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Sirmaur and Solan districts and disruption to water, power and communication facilities.
