The victim, believed to be a little girl, is said to have jumped to the ground from an upstairs bay window store's awning before it hits the pavement.

The child, who was conscious at the scene, was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital London.

A witness, who did not want to be named, told KentOnline: “There are two floors on top of Caffè Nero and we have no idea which window it came from.

“I just heard a lady screaming in fear and then a little girl lying on the floor screaming and crying.”

“On Friday afternoon, after we were made aware of the incident, members of the Council's Environmental Health team attended the property and provided a Health and safety Prohibition notice prohibiting access to the upstairs seating area for customers and/or members of the public; it stays in place.

“Under the Council's health and safety enforcement responsibilities, we are continuing a full and thorough investigation into the circumstances of the incident.”

The South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) confirmed it was called to reports of a child falling from a height.

A spokesperson said: “I can confirm that SECAmb was called at approximately 2.25pm ​​on Friday (February 16) to reports of a child falling from height at Royal Victoria Place, Tunbridge Wells.

“Ambulance crews attended the scene and were joined at the scene by the air ambulance Charity Kent, Surrey, Sussex.

“The child was assessed and treated before being transported to hospital in London for further assessment.”

A spokesperson for Royal Victoria Place extended its “best wishes” to the child's family.

They confirmed that the lease of the property is held by Caffè Nero and said they therefore cannot comment further.

The spokesperson said: “The safety of our visitors, colleagues and retailers is our top priority.

“We are saddened to hear of the terrible incident at Caffè Nero on Grosvenor Road and send our best wishes for a positive outcome for the family.”
