New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that those above the age of 18 who want to get Aadhaar created for the first time will now be subjected to physical verification, with the permission of the state government. “There will be a passport-like verification system for those who want their first Aadhaar after 18 years,” a UIDAI official said.

The state government will appoint nodal officers and additional district magistrates at district and sub-divisional level for this purpose, the official added. The Aadhaar facility for such persons will be available at select centers including the main post office of each district and other Aadhaar centers identified by the UIDAI.

UIDAI Deputy Director General Prashant Kumar Singh said in a press statement that the new guidelines will only apply to people above the age of 18 who are getting their Aadhaar for the first time. “Once their Aadhaar is created, they too can get it updated through normal processes,” he added.

The Aadhaar enrollment started in 2010 and till now it was the responsibility of UIDAI to verify the demographics of the person appearing for Aadhaar enrollment with proof of identity and address.

So far, 16.55 crore people above the age of 18 have obtained their Aadhaar in Uttar Pradesh. Every month, 13,246 Aadhaar nominations of people above 18 years of age are processed, officials further said. Currently, Aadhaar work is done through 14,095 Aadhaar nomination and update machines.

Deadline for Aadhaar update extended

The government has extended the deadline for updating Aadhaar data to March 14, 2024. According to the memorandum issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India, the decision to expand the facility comes after a positive response from residents who have availed the Aadhaar portal. for document updates during the initial period. This three-month extension provides individuals with an additional period to ensure their Aadhaar information remains accurate and up-to-date.

Here’s how you can update your Aadhaar card online:

  • Visit the official UIDIA website https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/
  • Enter the Aadhaar number and captcha
  • Click on ‘send OTP’ and enter the OTP you received on your linked number.
  • Then select ‘Update Demographics’.
  • On the next page, select the relevant options and click ‘Continue’.
  • The changes can be made on the next page.
  • Then upload the relevant document.
  • Check the entered information.
  • Submit the change request. The Update Request Number (URN) allows you to track the status of the address change.
