Agra, UP: A 12-year-old boy walked 3 km barefoot to reach a police station in rural Agra to save his mother from his drunken father who allegedly beat her, police said here on Wednesday.

According to police, the boy headed for Basoni police station after seeing his father, a 40-year-old Hariom, beat his mother with an iron pipe and belt.

The incident happened on Tuesday in the village of Jebra in the Bah block.

“The boy came to the police station on Tuesday morning when I was sitting in front of my office. He rushed to me and complained that his father, Hariom, beat his wife with a belt and an iron pipe,” Basoni police station chief Veerendra Kumar told PTI.

“The 12-year-old boy also complained that his father was an alcoholic and beat his wife regularly,” he added.

Hariom works as a laborer in a private factory in Bah in rural Agra, Kumar said.

The SHO said it rushed a police team to the boy’s home who initially arrested Hariom, but later let him go because his wife would not press charges and Hariom vowed never to lay his hand on her again.

The teen’s bravery was praised by both the police and villagers as well as his own grandfather, a 70-year-old Deshraj.

“I was surprised and felt good when I saw the young boy’s courage. You rarely see kids his age running to the police station and complaining about such incidents. He came alone and informed us about the whole incident,” said Kumar.
