Has the air fryer had its chips? Kitchen company launches oven plate that mimics the energy-efficient cooking of a countertop appliance, saying it ‘does the same job’ without cluttering the worktop

If more kitchen space is high on your Christmas wish list, then a baking dish that claims to do the same job as an air fryer could be the answer to your festive prayers.

Kitchen specialist Howdens has posted about its new Lamona Air Fryer Tray, which fits into a standard oven and, the company says, works just like a countertop air fryer.

In a video posted to Howdens’ Instagram account, the product is used by Interiors influencer Kate Ward, aka @kateandherhome, who prepares chips using the stainless steel griddle.

The kitchen company says the container mimics air fryer cooking with its “welded mesh design,” which allows heated air to circulate around food items in the same way as in a conventional air fryer.

In the advert, Kate posted about the product: ‘Cooking with this griddle is faster and saves up to 80% on energy consumption. Because it uses less oil than frying, it’s a healthier option, but doesn’t compromise on flavor. Moreover, it is easier to clean and store than a conventional air fryer!’

There is no price listed for the product; MailOnline asked Howdens how much the new tray will cost consumers.

In recent years, the air fryer has become a permanent fixture in many kitchens, because of the device uses less energy than both a conventional oven and a microwave.

The air fryer is also healthier than a deep fryer because it is crispy and crunchy, yet requires a minimal amount of oil.

Air fryers work much like a mini oven, cooking food in a basket at a high temperature (usually 200 degrees) with a powerful fan circulating the heat.

Thanks to energy-efficient and healthier cooking, the air fryer has proven to be extremely popular in recent years

It is unclear how much the tray costs. MailOnline has contacted Howdens, but it is likely to be cheaper than the countertop air fryer, which typically costs between £40 and £400.

However, our love affair with them may be on the wane, with some saying the devices, which retail anywhere from £40 to £400, simply take up too much space.

In the comments below Kate’s Instagram post, someone wrote: ‘Yessss! So ideal. I would like an air fryer, but I can’t have more stuff on the sides. What a great product.’

Another said: ‘No way!!! I have a messy kitchen problem because it is so small. This is so smart.’

While someone wrote: ‘I bought an air fryer in green, but it’s still in the cupboard and now I don’t use it anymore.’
