In order to keep their family together all the time, even while he worked on set, they decided to live on the road.

“Being away from my family on location for long periods of time was hard on them and on me,” he explained. “So Cat and I recently sold our house in Florida and we are now living in Airbnbs and hotels while I finish.”

In the same interview, he said he was eliminated from American Idol in the second round, which he said led to his “first break” in 2005.

That year he was cast in The Butcher, which he described as “a cheap horror film”, and then in Smallville, which ran until 2011.

In 2022, he landed the lead role in the show adaptation of the 2012 Tom Cruise-led Jack Reacher film, based on the books by Lee Child.

He explained that when he auditioned, he “passed” the role because he did not meet the desired height and weight requirements for the role.

“My audition wasn’t a piece of cake,” he admitted. ‘First they passed by [because] they wanted someone six feet tall. I am 6 feet tall and weighed 205 pounds at the time.

Despite the initial rejection, he started reading the books to get a handle on the character’s “bone-dry humor” and started “piling on.”

He also talked about how the Amazon Prime Video action series contributed to his success and also led to his high school bully-turned-fan asking him for a selfie when they ran into each other years later.

He recalled being teased at school by some of his peers because he had no body hair and was “a very late bloomer.”

After finding success in Hollywood and gaining fame, he said he “ran into one of the guys who teased me in high school” before he and his wife sold their house and left Florida.
