“Currently stuck at 40 Mbps, but that’s not enough to stream Atmos content,” the Reddit user said.

Almost all Wi-Fi routers use two different frequencies or communication bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

40 Mbps typically runs at a frequency of 2.4 GHz, which is good for smart home devices like electrical outlets, fans, or printers, one Reddit user explains.

However, for streaming devices, you’re better off using 5GHz, the user continued.

“Yes, with 5 GHz you should be able to manage hundreds of Mbits,” another Reddit user shared.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

The difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi comes down to speed and range.

The 2.4 GHz frequency is said to be better for range, meaning it covers a larger area.

This band penetrates solid objects better – this is useful if you have large furniture around your router.

However, compared to 5 GHz, the frequency has a lower data rate, meaning it is slower.

This is also the case because this band is more sensitive to interference and more devices usually use this frequency.

The 5 GHz frequency is better for speed as it offers a higher data rate.

In contrast to 2.4 GHz, it is less susceptible to interference, covers a smaller surface area and penetrates solid objects more poorly.

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR SETTINGS

You can easily change the frequency of your Wi-Fi via your router settings.

Typically, you can type your router’s IP address into a browser, go to the Wireless setting, and then select Channels.
