Amy Robach and TJ Holmes get relationship therapy on podcast

Amy Robach And TJ Holmes admitted that they let one small disagreement go too far.

“We can tell you all that there was one night that Robach and I spent apart that can be specifically attributed to an argument we had,” Holmes, 46, said on the Tuesday, December 26, episode of their “Amy and TJ“podcast.

Robach, 50, admitted the pair “needed space” from each other and that the distance was “good” for cooling off. They were previously asked on the podcast if they were ‘open’ to doing relationship therapy and had said no at the time. However, Holmes joked Tuesday that they “may have spoken too soon” and planned to talk to an old friend Dr. Jeff Gardere about their argument.

The pair revealed that their disagreement started as something “small” regarding Holmes’ nighttime routine, which they eventually “let to fester.”

“What put me over the edge was that we’ve had this conversation so many times about your sleeping habits,” Robach admitted. “You like to stay on the couch, you like not to go to bed, you started cooking a meal at midnight and I was just frustrated. I was like, ‘Can we please go to bed?’”

Holmes admitted that the argument happened just before the holidays and that both he and Robach were feeling the stress of the busy time of year. They also admitted that alcohol played a minor role. Gardere credited both Robach and Holmes with knowing when to let each other relax.

After choosing not to spend the night together, Holmes confessed that he felt guilty about his thought process in solving the case.

“I felt embarrassed after the fight because my first thought wasn’t, ‘I need to make sure she’s okay, and we’re okay, let me apologize,’” he recalled. “My first thought was, ‘We have to make sure we’re okay because we have family coming to town and we have to put on a good face. We’re going into the studio together and we have to make sure we’re optimistic and make sure we don’t give the impression that something is wrong.’”

When they were ready to kiss and make up after a few days of silence, Robach and Holmes contacted each other via text message. Holmes admitted that he needed a day or two to cool down and process his feelings. For her part, Robach said she would rather have her boyfriend talk and “yell” at her instead of “freezing” her during their disagreements.

“If I have someone close to me, it is the person who brought the pain that I feel. This person will not leave my life, I understand that,” Holmes explained. “But I’m still dealing with that thing and struggling with the fact that I was hurt so bad, and then trying to go back and receive love for the person who hurt me.”

After speaking with Gardere and hearing Robach say how “terrible” the distance was, Holmes graciously apologized to Robach and noted that he would work on becoming a better partner.

Holmes and Robach made headlines over a year ago after photos surfaced of them getting cozy off camera. After the scandal, the first GMA3 anchors were fired in January. Earlier this month, Robach and Holmes dropped their podcast discussing their relationship and how their loved ones responded to the scandal.
