Are Gen Z lazy employees? Boomer claims they’ve been ‘coddled’ during heated GMB debate – while young entrepreneur insists there’s nothing wrong with ‘setting boundaries’

A heated debate broke out over GMB after Gen-Z employees were accused of being lazy workers.

Journalist Nina Myskow said Gen Zers, typically aged 16 to 27, are “coddled” and business leaders find it “nearly impossible to find staff”.

But entrepreneur Adwoa Owusu-Darko said they “really just value work-life balance and setting boundaries.”

The topic of discussion comes after Oscar-winning actor Jodie Foster described them as ‘work shy’ and ‘really annoying’ to work with.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Nina said: ‘I’m not writing off a whole generation, but I will say Jodie Foster has a point. I guess it’s not their fault because they were raised, protected and, in some cases, spoiled.

‘Only through adversity do you gain some kind of backbone, resilience and work ethic. It’s not that generation’s fault, they were raised with a sense of entitlement.’

Adwoa disagreed, saying, “The Gen Z generation has a sense of innovation and efficiency. More than 50 percent of Generation Z have a full-time job and a part-time job.

“To be able to work a part-time job and pursue an entrepreneurial spirit, which I did all through college, and then start a business, now have five streams of income — that shows that Gen Z has a tremendous ability to see beyond the limitations of their lives.’

Nina went on to say that Adwoa is “atypical” because she is “extremely privileged.”

She added, “I’m not saying there aren’t other people like you, but the vast majority of that generation needs to find a job where someone can employ them.”

After Richard Madley asked her what she thinks of the boomer generation, Nina said, “The boomer generation took advantage of what they had, but my generation has so many more jobs through social media that allow young people to find new ways to earn an income . ‘

Nina argued that ‘many business leaders’ have spoken about the ‘difficulty’ of finding staff.

When Adwoa asked which entrepreneurs exactly found it difficult, Nina said: ‘I can’t name them, but there are many.’

She added: “They make demands instead of going on interviews and asking what the terms of the job are. They say: ‘No, I don’t work on Friday evenings, but I don’t work on Saturdays either’.

Adwoa agreed: “They set boundaries and value work-life balance. They want to work for a company that values your time and your well-being.”
