New Delhi: While voicing his opinion on the controversial capture of Mitchell Starc during Day 4 of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s, senior English sailor Stuart Broad said that if that method of capture were deemed legal it would become a widely accepted technique among all players .

On Day 4 of the second Test at Lord’s, England opener Ben Duckett had a lucky breakaway as he hit a short throw to the fine leg. Mitchell Starc, playing on the fine leg, managed to reach and seemingly catch the ball, but he pressed the ball into the turf while sliding.

Therefore, the third umpire, Marais Erasmus, made the decision not to call the game.

In his column for the Daily Mail, Broad gave his opinion on the incident which caused much debate and stated that it was correct to rule it out as not as the rules state that the ball is not allowed to make contact with the ground.

“Ultimately, as far as I understand the rule, the ball must not touch the ground. We’ve all played cricket where a catch is made with your hands up and your elbow hits the ground and the ball pops out.

But you catch the ball and turn your hands and grind the ball on the ground, the ball can’t jump out of your hand. If that was a legal way to catch we would all do it,” Broad wrote.

The 37-year-old also reflected on the blow he received in the neck while batting on the second day of Green’s bowling and expressed disappointment at having to spend two hours in hospital.

“I was a little frustrated spending a two hour hospital visit on Friday night after being stricken with a Cameron Green delivery. Unfortunately it hit me under the grill and hit me in the neck, up in my jaw. It hurt,” Broad wrote.
