New Delhi: With an aim to become completely green, Delhi will add 500 more electric buses to its fleet. The buses, which are part of the central government’s FAME II programme, will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and LG Vinai Kumar Saxena at IP Depot on Thursday.

According to officials, this will be the largest single launch in recent memory. As of January 2022, as many as 800 electric buses are plying on Delhi’s roads. They have covered a distance of more than 42 million kilometers and reduced more than 34,000 tons of carbon dioxide so far, he said. With the addition of the new buses, Delhi will have a total of 1,300 electric buses on its roads – the most in any Indian city.

Functions of electric DTC buses

The new buses are suitable for the disabled, air-conditioned, do not emit smoke or noise and are equipped with GPS, CCTV and panic buttons. “The old low-floor buses are being phased out and the focus is on sustainable and cleaner modes of transport. By 2025, the old buses will be almost completely phased out,” the official said.

The buses will also have live video streaming in case of emergency, as well as fire detection and suppression systems to protect passengers from any kind of fire. In addition, these are directly monitored by the Central Command Control Room.
