Bangalore: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday announced that the government will lift the ban on hijab in educational institutions. He said instructions have been issued to the officials and the order will come soon.

While addressing a gathering in Mysore, CM Siddaramaiah said a woman can “wear anything she wants”. “Hijab ban no longer exists. (Women) can wear a hijab and go anywhere. I have ordered that the (prohibition) order be withdrawn. How you dress and what you eat is your choice. Why should I stop you? Wear what you want. Eat what you want, CM said.

During his speech, CM also pointed out, “I am wearing a dhoti… you are wearing a pant shirt… what is wrong with that?”

To recall, the BJP government under CM B. Bommai had banned hijab in educational institutions of the state. The decision had led to a row with mass protests breaking out in many regions.
