It’s the point at which the average worker has earned enough to cover essentials like energy, council tax, water, internet, insurance and subscription services like Netflix and Spotify.

Experts who made the calculation suspect it will be later in the year, as energy, mobile and broadband costs remain stubbornly high.

Bills Freedom Day assumed an average take-home pay of £28,245 per year.

But according to the website Nous, annual household bills amount to £4,561.

It means that it takes almost two months for the bills to be covered.

This figure does not include rent, mortgage or food bills and assumes that all household costs are shared with a partner.

Nous.co CEO Greg Marsh said: “It’s depressing to think that all the work you’ve done this year, all the money you’ve earned so far, has been completely swallowed up by your bills.

“Bills Freedom Day gets later every year.

“Utility bills are still 50% above pre-pandemic levels, and mobile and broadband costs are also rising – partly due to unfair mid-contract price increases.

“What makes it worse is that almost all of us pay much more on our household bills than necessary.

“Keeping track of contracts is a huge headache. Suppliers know this and use it to their advantage.”
