St John’s: Ahead of the two-match Test series against India, West Indies Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite said legendary batsman Brian Lara’s advice on dealing with different situations was great and hopes it will help the rest of the batting line-up.

Lara, the former left-handed batsman widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time, is currently in the Test team’s prep camp at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua as the team’s performance mentor ahead of the series against India, which begins July 12 in Dominica.

Earlier this year, 54-year-old Lara worked with the Test Team on tours through Zimbabwe and South Africa.

“It’s great to have him here. In terms of the conversations we have with him, we’re always learning and he’s big on planning… on how you’re going to score your runs. His advice on situations is great and it will just helping the batters,” Brathwaite told Cricket West Indies (CWI).

After the first Test against India in Dominica, the second Test will be played in Trinidad from July 20, followed by the three ODIs and five T20Is on the tour. Brathwaite has urged cricket fans in Dominica and Trinidad to flock to stadiums and support the team.

“It is important to start well. We’re playing India, so you know the guys are really looking forward to it. Dominica will host the first test match and we are calling on supporters in Dominica to come out and support us – but the boys are very much looking forward to the first two test matches of this cycle,” he said.

The second Test in Trinidad will also be the 100th Test match between the West Indies and India.

“That’s great, you know, in terms of the 100th Test match against India, and it’s in Trinidad, and you know they love their cricket there, so I think it’s important, and we have to try to get the region to make proud. The guys have been giving their best for the last three days, and they have a few more days to go and you know we have to keep pushing hard,” concluded Brathwaite.
