EVERY Briton must NOW do a three-second direct debit check or risk hundreds of pounds disappearing from your account, warns Martin Lewis.

The MoneySavingExpert has declared today as “Direct Debit Day” and he continues his mission to save the country as much money as possible.

Speaking on the Martin Lewis Money Show on Tuesday, the expert urged anyone who has regular and recurring payments on their account to check them again.

He said payments “trickle down our accounts” and most of the time we don't even realize it – which is useful for bills, but not for all transactions.

But sometimes outgoing payments can have an error and if you don't check it, you can suffer huge losses.

In his series finale tonight, Martin said: 'The thing about regular payments is that we spend our money, but we don't do it consciously.

“It's happening behind our backs, but if you don't check them regularly, millions of people are paying for things they don't want and things they don't need.”

Producer Josh admitted on Martin's show that he had fallen victim to this problem.

He explained that he had been paying for Amazon Prime twice a month for two years, meaning he had lost £280 without even noticing.

Fiona in the audience found four payments on her mobile banking app that she had no idea about.

The mother has been paying £4 a month for the past eight years for a tech product she no longer has.

One man in the crowd said he had found a payment of £12 a month for a garden centre.

He had been paying out the money over the past ten years, meaning he had lost £1,444 without realizing it.

And Dan had been paying for an old phone line through one of his direct debits for the past six months.

Another man discovered he had been paying £10.99 a month for Netflix for the past nine months, but didn't need to as he had it on his Sky.

To dump or not to dump

MARTIN Lewis has provided a handy three-step guide to help you decide whether you should continue to pay.

He said before you cancel, make sure your contract is up.

If you pay for something pointless, throw it away, Martin explains.

  • Can I afford it?
  • Should I use it?
  • Is it worth it?
